Computing for Investment Analysis
This course is a medium-level introduction to Python and its applications in fundamental analysis, especially estimating the value of companies from fundamental analysis and SEC filings. (If you need a complete introduction, please follow the online "CBS Python Level 1," a prerequisite to this course that I assume all of you have taken. To quote Warren Buffett, we want to automate the work of finding "outstanding companies at sensible prices."
In the first half of the course, we build a quantitative discounted cash flow model in Python to estimate a company's value. We start with a simple one-line formula for the net present value from free cash flow and the average cost of capital. We then add refinements, such as a continuation value, revenue growth predicted from GDP growth, and sensitivity analysis. At the end, we have a tool that takes a stock ticker like "MSFT" and automatically computes a range of intrinsic values for the share price. We apply this tool to US public companies and obtain a list of the most undervalued and overvalued companies.
In the second half of the course, we consider one possible reason for this discrepancy. If a company is under-valued or over-valued, what could the market know that we do not? Is there information that we are missing? Yes, indeed: so far, we have used a company's public disclosures to provide numbers for our quantitative model, but one important piece of information we have not considered is the text. We therefore build a qualitative model from the textual information in a company's public filings. For example, a company may be under federal investigation, and investors are therefore justifiably pessimistic about its future, which could explain a low share price. We therefore apply "text mining" to the risk disclosures in a company's 10-K filing. Our qualitative model identifies new risks within the company and issues a recommendation: "buy" or "sell."
If our quantitative model predicts that a stock is undervalued (the current share price is low relative to fundamentals) and our qualitative model finds no red flags in the risk disclosures, we can recommend the company with reasonable confidence as a "buy." Conversely, if our quantitative model predicts that a company is overvalued and has risk disclosures, we can recommend that the company is a "sell." We then form a long-short portfolio.

Applications of behavioral insights are expanding rapidly across civic, medical, social, corporate, educational, and economic professions. This class covers the underlying theories for behavioral insights, using scientific and real-world examples of applications from multiple disciplines and locations. COLLOQ ON POLITICAL BEHAVIOR
Courses on public opinion and political behavior (including the GR8210 seminar taught by Professor Shapiro) ordinarily move briskly through a wide array of topics having to do with how American tend to think and act. This class has a narrower scope but tries to delve more deeply into the literature. We focus on four topics that are arguably crucial understanding contemporary American politics (and perhaps the politics of other times and places).
The first topic addresses what might be thought of as the legacies of slavery: prejudice, resentment, racial/ethnic group identification, issue preferences on topics that are directly or indirectly connected to race/ethnicity, and group differences in political behavior.
The second topic considers the literature on partisanship and polarization, as well as related topics on “macropartisan” change and party realignment. What are the causes of micro- and macropartisan change, and what are its consequences?
The third topic is support for democratic norms, civil liberties, and respect for the rights of unpopular groups. How deeply committed are Americans to democratic values and constitutional rights?
The fourth topic is the influence of media on public opinion, a vast topic that includes the effects of advertising, news, social media, narrative entertainment, and so forth.
Although we will be focusing on just four broad topics, time constraints nevertheless prevent us from covering more than a fraction of each scholarly literature. Students are encouraged to read beyond the syllabus, and I am happy to offer suggestions.

From 1970 until today, America’s prison and jail population has increased sevenfold, from some 300,000 to around 2.2 million adults and children behind bars. Accounting for less than 5 percent of the world’s inhabitants, but about 25 percent of the world’s incarcerated inhabitants, the United States is the most incarcerating society in human history. The U.S. federal and state governments imprison more people and at higher rates than do any other governments on the planet, and they do so today more than they did at any other period in American history.
This astounding amount of human confinement (commonly called “mass incarceration”) disproportionately impacts the polity’s poorest communities of color—especially young Black males—which suffer from chronic conditions and infectious disease; face higher mortality rates; and experience, because of criminal records, less opportunity to secure gainful employment, stable housing, access to safety net programs, and education. Female incarceration over the past few decades has grown at twice the rate of male incarceration, and black women, specifically, are twice as likely as white women to serve time. Imprisonment exposes people to a wide range of circumstances proving detrimental to long-term physical and mental health, like inadequate sanitation, poor ventilation, and solitary confinement. And most formerly incarcerated people return to their communities with deep wounds and new traumas resulting from incarcerated life and from isolation through long separations from families and social supports.
This course sits at the intersection of public health, policy, and law. The course will explore the full spectrum of causes and costs of mass incarceration as a public health crisis. This course will examine how exposures to different structures of the American criminal punishment apparatus (e.g., law enforcement, jail, prison, or detention centers, community supervision) shape the health of people, families, and society. Observing mass incarceration as an epidemic, this course will adopt a useful public-health model of prevention to contemplate a concerted approach consisting of primary, secondary, and tertiary strategies for unwinding mass human imprisonment while advancing enhanced public health for the nation’s most disempowered members. This course will pay special attention to acutely at-risk populations, including detained youth and youth of incarcerated adults, pregnant incarcerated people, and the elderly. And the role that

Macroeconomic Policy
Macroeconomics is in the news every day. Anyone who pays attention to the news knows that the crash in the US housing market in 2008 caused dramatic perturbations to financial markets all around the world. This, in turn, triggered very strong responses by governments in the US (in particular the Federal Reserve and the Treasury), as well as in other countries. This meltdown in financial markets and the interventions from policymakers raise a number of key questions about the health and the future of the economy in the US and abroad, which we will address in the Global Economic Environment II course.This course is a sequel to the core course Global Economic Environment. Building on the fundamentals introduced in that course, we develop a conceptual framework to explain the complex interactions between macroeconomic policy, asset prices, and business cycle fluctuations. In particular, we examine macroeconomic forecasting, determinants, and implications of budget deficits, the conduct and implementation of monetary policy, and the determinants of inflation in the U.S. and other market economies around the world. Special attention is given to the interactions between macroeconomic forces and asset prices.Since an important goal of this course is for students to become informed and sophisticated consumers of economic news, the issues discussed in this course draw heavily from current events and real-world examples.
Note I: The core course GEE while recommended is not a pre-requisite for taking GEEII. Students who expect to exempt from the core course GEE are recommended to take GEEII instead.

Cold War Globalization: China and Easter
This course follows a paradigm developed by the historians Artemy Kalinovsky, James Mark, and Steffi Marung, termed alternative globalization, or socialist globalization, which focuses on the interconnections and global policy of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during the Cold War. This course will study the interactions between China and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, and their independent interactions with the rest of the world, with attention paid to intellectual exchanges, economic aid, geopolitical competition, and diverging developmental pathways. In broad terms: 1) It will begin with the intertwined histories of the origins and development of the CCP and the establishment of communist states in Eastern Europe, 2) then study the process of economic aid to China from the Soviet Union, 3) the Sino-Soviet Split and China’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement, 4) the competition between Eastern Europe states and China for global influence after the Sino-Soviet Split, 5) the actions of Eastern European states and China in Africa, 6) the process of economic reform in China under Deng Xiaoping, 7) and the divergence in reform between China and Eastern Europe in the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout this course we will be wrestling with a series of questions – What was global socialism? Why was China able to successfully reform and the Eastern Bloc not? What role did global socialism play in creating the world we live in today? How should we historicize global socialism, Eastern Europe, and China’s fall and rise?

Financial Stability Monitoring
This course focuses on financial stability monitoring and evaluation as an essential discipline for macroeconomic, financial and prudential policymakers. We begin by defining financial stability, examining the dynamic behavior of macroeconomic models with developed models of the financial sector, and considering conceptual frameworks for assessment of threats to financial stability. From there, we identify key signatures of financial instability, how they can be measured and combined in a monitoring system, and how such measurement systems signal changes in the level of systemic risk. Through case studies, class participation and two assignments, you will interpret these measures, develop questions for further investigation and assess the nature and extent of systemic risk. You will be asked to write two policy memoranda: the first proposing and justifying a small set of financial stability indicators for monitoring; and the second assessing the risk of financial instability in indicators for that (or another) country, in indicators of vulnerabilities with strong network effects, and in unconventional risks such as cyber or widespread trade tensions. Both assignments emphasize developing timely and persuasive analysis that prompts policymakers to consider the need for action to preserve financial stability.

Macroprudential Policy
This short course will start with a brief overview of the post-crisis reforms and focus on the gap that macroprudential policy was meant to fill: the lack of a system-wide perspective on financial stability. It will explore the conceptual and practical difficulties in defining financial stability and setting an operational target for policy; provide a high-level overview of the tools for monitoring systemic risk, including stress tests, as well as of the various macroprudential policy instruments available to mitigate it; and discuss the governance challenges in setting up an institutional framework for macroprudential policy. The course will review how the major advanced economies (US, UK, Euro area) have tackled these issues, as well as discuss aspects of macroprudential policy specific to emerging market (EM) and developing countries. Lastly, the course will examine recent and emerging challenges to financial stability, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, cyber risk, and the transition to a low-carbon economy; discuss the experience so far with macroprudential policy responses to these challenges; and assess the adequacy of the existing tools to address them.
This course will have a practical focus, emphasizing the perspective and actual experience of policymakers. By the end of this course, students should have a good understanding of the concepts of financial stability and systemic risk and their measurement, as well as how they are applied in the real world; the difference between the micro- and macro-prudential approach to financial regulation; the architecture and working of macroprudential policy in a variety of country circumstances; the role of central banks and the associated political economy challenges; and emerging risks to financial stability. Students will be encouraged, including through class discussions and assignments, to approach these issues from the standpoint of policymakers.

Private Equity Field Study
The “Private Equity Lab” offers a distinctive experiential learning opportunity for students to engage directly with private equity firms on real-world projects. This course is a blend of academic instruction and hands-on experience, tailored for those looking to deepen their understanding of private equity (PE) through practical application. Partnering with PE firms identified through the Columbia Business School's (CBS) alumni network in the New York City area, this program supports students who work on specific research projects integral to the firms' current deals, portfolio management, or investment strategy. These projects are screened to be mission-crucial but not mission-critical for the firms. This ensures students will work on meaningful projects while protecting the partner firm’s performance. The course thus facilitates a connection between a student and a PE firm with a self-contained research project that could benefit from the student’s skills.
The course aims to coordinate a collection of such projects that would otherwise be organized as “Field Study Projects” in independent studies and seeks to overcome the challenge of students sourcing these opportunities and identifying faculty advisors to mentor the project. Importantly, this is not an internship arrangement, and students are not paid (thus, the hours worked are capped at the usual amount of total expected class time).
