Quality health care is dependent on consistent, systematic, and collaborative efforts of all healthcare personnel through the shared priority objective of positive patient outcomes. In this practicum on Quality Improvement, students will apply concepts of the NURSN5950 Nursing Leadership and Management course and engage in established healthcare quality improvement initiatives. This interactive course explores quality improvement, research processes, knowledge of health-care systems, and innovative corrective measures as it relates to safe, effective nursing practice. Through the support of student group-led analysis and discussion of selected quality improvement measures, students will explore strategies and roadmaps to quality healthcare through the lens of multidisciplinary collaboration and nursing leadership.
Within this course, students will explore how practices from human-centered design (HCD) can be applied to the end-to-end data science workflow—problem (use case) definition, data collection & preparation, data exploration, data modeling, and communicating and visualizing the results— in order to build trust in data that is used to drive strategy and decision making and impact organizational change. Students will learn about fundamental human values and how methods from the behavioral sciences and HCD can inspire ethical use of data to drive strategy and change in the modern, data-driven workplace. Students will understand how keeping “humans in the loop” is beneficial, and they will develop a critical eye for assessing whether the data they rely on to make decisions at work is human-centric, particularly as we become more reliant on data science and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to inform our insights, strategies, and decision making at work.

Journalism is changing rapidly, but the written word remains as important to journalists today as it was a century ago. It’s still a storytelling medium in and of itself, of course. But even if you don’t plan to work in print, you need to know how to write clearly and accurately in order to supplement or explain video and photos, to put together engaging audio and video scripts, and to pitch ideas to editors.

This seminar addresses the particular needs of Advanced Standing Students. The seminar provides a context and tools to deepen, critically reflect upon, and integrate each student's learning about the professional use of self in practice and the field. Successful public health studies, policies, and interventions rely on evidence to guide their design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Because public health is not a simple, reactive, “take the pill three times a day” solution, but a purposeful approach to preventing disease and promoting health, the tools of scientific inquiry to document, measure, evaluate, and understand all the consequences of health interventions are essential. Learning to identify, gather, and interpret evidence is therefore crucial for public health practitioners. The Research Methods & Applications studio provides an introduction to scientific inquiry and evidence and their relationships to public policy. Using an integrated approach spanning multiple disciplines, students will be provided with a basic introduction to quantitative and qualitative measurement and data collection, tenets of epidemiologic study design, statistical inference and data analysis techniques, and the tools of science. Views on the differences between scientific and other types of inquiry and knowledge, classical models of how science and evidence can inform policy and programs, and sources of tension at the science- policy interface will be explored and discussed. The methods introduced in this course will provide a toolkit with which to help measure and estimate the relationships between the smaller pieces that comprise the complex and dynamic web of systems in public health.

This course is an exercise in discussing philosophical and ethical choices -- quandaries, at times -- in the covering of news, the construing of news, judging the newsworthiness of news. Among the subjects explored during the class are the responsibilities of journalists; the ideal of objectivity, the impacts of new technology, use of anonymous sources, and using experts.
Like many fields of learning, biostatistics has its own vocabulary often seen in medical and public health literature. Phrases like statistical significance", "p-value less than 0.05", "95% confident", and "margin of error" can have enormous impact in a world that relies on statistics to make decisions: Should Drug A be recommended over Drug B? Should a national policy on X be implemented? Does Vitamin C truly prevent colds? However, do we really know what these terms and phrases mean? Understanding the theory and methodology behind study design, estimation and hypothesis testing is crucial to ensuring that findings and practices in public health and biomedicine are supported by reliable evidence.
This course is designed for future leaders and top-level advisors within both governmental and non-governmental (i.e. private for-profit and non-profit) organizations. The goal is to introduce the participants to the basic concepts, skills, and tools of “positive political theory” in policymaking. A significant portion of the class material will be devoted to abstract theoretical foundations of strategic political interaction, which will prove instrumental in understanding and predicting patterns of political behavior and outcomes. Although there will be a sizable amount of literature you will be asked to rummage through, our approach will not be entirely interpretive. In fact, a significant amount of class time will be allocated to the practical application of knowledge gathered from readings and discussions. Although the reading materials will focus primarily on national policymaking in the United States, we will from time to time refer to other sub-national levels (i.e. states and municipal) and countries.

We discuss global policies on investment and trade, combating poverty, and sustainable development. Pressing security issues are also discussed, including peacebuilding in war-torn societies, terrorism, cybersecurity, and weapons of mass destruction.
The format of the class combines open-ended lectures and interactive discussions of assigned readings. Each week, students discuss and debate three assigned articles that offer differing interpretations of the global dilemma addressed in the session. Assigned readings are carefully selected to convey of a range of opinions on controversial themes. Restricting the syllabus to several readings per week cannot do justice to the complexity of each topic. However, a realistic reading assignment enables students to fulfill this requirement diligently, and you are expected to do so. Supplementary sources will be suggested, to encourage exploration of specific topics in greater depth.
Individualized, guided learning experiences at the graduate level in a selected area of concentration. The area of concentration selected should reflect both the role of the clinical specialist / nurse practitioner and the student’s specific interests. Proposed work must be outlined prior to registration and agreed upon by both faculty and student.

This course takes your product from testing to a business, with the essential elements of a pitch to potential funders and investors, including competitive market analysis, unit economic analysis and financial modeling, team/cap table, and growth strategy.
The TMGT Capstone serves as the culmination of the M.S. in Technology Management program journey. In this course, students will apply the learnings from the entire program to solve a real-world challenge that an organization is facing with a technology solution.
This course is designed as a review of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a candidate for the NCLEX-RN licensing exam for registered professional nurse. Students will learn how to utilize resources to build proficiency in the clinical judgement assessments of the exam and will implement professional and personal practices to enhance potential to be a successful candidate.
