Narrative Medicine Independent Study may be taken for one to four points (credits) depending on the work involved as determined with the advisor. Students may propose an Independent Study topic based on their past experience and future professional or academic goals, providing the opportunity for in-depth investigation of a particular topic of interest. Examples include: curriculum, program design, or program evaluation projects; creative projects; publishable articles, etc. Independent Study is not required for completion of the program.

Overview
: This 1 semester course (elective, IKNS students only, hybrid) provides an opportunity for a student to extend or supplement their educational experience via a deep-dive into an established or novel area of research of their choice (the topic), under the guidance & supervision of a faculty member (the supervisor). An independent study course allows a student to work one-on-one with a faculty member to gain & contribute new insight into the discipline of Knowledge Management.
Topic/objective
: The topic is chosen by the student as long as it falls within the general realm of Knowledge Management or its specific content areas in the IKNS curriculum, such as IT systems, knowledge organizing systems, data repositories, business data analytics including machine learning & AI, learning processes, collaboration, dialogue, team & project management, transformational leadership, change management, digital transformation, or digital product innovation. The course will therefore serve the dual purpose of allowing a student to pursue their own intellectual curiosity & to make a contribution to the wider discipline of Knowledge Management. In addition, students will deepen their understanding of the content they acquired in other courses, by applying this content to the specific topic chosen for the Independent Study.

Independent Study Proposal

The scope can range from a summary of existing sources (typically 1 credit. 5-10 pg report), to a synthesis or meta-analysis of existing & new sources, e.g., interviews withSMEs (typically 2 credits, 10-15 pg report), to a comprehensive study which adds the student’s own critical discussion & suggestions to the topic (typically 3 credits; 15-20 pg report).
This intensive six-week Summer Session is specially designed for students of the MPA in Global Leadership (MPA-GL) program. The course provides students with an immersion into five Global Policy Challenges: Geopolitical Stability, Climate and Sustainable Development, Democratic Resilience, Inclusive Prosperity and Macroeconomic Stability, and Technology and Innovation. The special summer session also includes one week of training in the development of leadership skills, such as communication and impact. The course is curated and hosted by the MPA-GL Program Director who will moderate presentations and discussions with leading experts from Columbia University as well as outside accomplished practitioners and policy experts.

This course is designed to provide an overview of critical health disparities within the global community and provide the student with a systematic approach to understanding them within the framework of human rights and social justice. This seminar addresses the particular needs of Advanced Standing Students. The seminar provides a context and tools to deepen, critically reflect upon, and integrate each student's learning about the professional use of self in practice and the field. Also included is the review and exploration of professional social work identities within historical and current contexts, and an examination of the multiple professional identities that are inherent in all areas of social work practice.

Successful public health studies, policies, and interventions rely on evidence to guide their design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Because public health is not a simple, reactive, “take the pill three times a day” solution, but a purposeful approach to preventing disease and promoting health, the tools of scientific inquiry to document, measure, evaluate, and understand all the consequences of health interventions are essential. Learning to identify, gather, and interpret evidence is therefore crucial for public health practitioners. The Research Methods & Applications studio provides an introduction to scientific inquiry and evidence and their relationships to public policy. Using an integrated approach spanning multiple disciplines, students will be provided with a basic introduction to quantitative and qualitative measurement and data collection, tenets of epidemiologic study design, statistical inference and data analysis techniques, and the tools of science. Views on the differences between scientific and other types of inquiry and knowledge, classical models of how science and evidence can inform policy and programs, and sources of tension at the science- policy interface will be explored and discussed. The methods introduced in this course will provide a toolkit with which to help measure and estimate the relationships between the smaller pieces that comprise the complex and dynamic web of systems in public health.

This course is an exercise in discussing philosophical and ethical choices -- quandaries, at times -- in the covering of news, the construing of news, judging the newsworthiness of news. Among the subjects explored during the class are the responsibilities of journalists; the ideal of objectivity, the impacts of new technology, use of anonymous sources, and using experts.

The area of concentration selected should reflect both the role of the clinical specialist/nurse practitioner and the student's specific interests. The objective of this course is to provide a simple introduction to the (basic) mathematics used in economics. By the end of the course you should be familiar with several basic tools used in economics including calculus for functions of several variables, optimization problems with and without constraints, linear algebra, integrals and an introduction to differential equations.
This course facilitates learning about 1) basic principles related to ecological interactions of life on earth and 2) the causes and consequence of changes in biological diversity. For the first portion of this course, we will focus on how organisms interact with one another and with the non-living environment. For the second portion of this course, we will study the effects of biodiversity at the genetic, population, community, and landscape levels. This course aims to give students an understanding of the ways in which biology can contribute to the solution of environmental problems facing human society and to contribute biological perspectives to an interdisciplinary approach to environmental problem solving.
Students learn how ecology can inform land use decisions and applied management strategies of natural resources (e.g. water, air, biodiversity), particularly in urban environments. The course covers topics ranging from applied ecology and conservation biology to sustainable development. It uses a cross-disciplinary approach to understanding the nature of ecology and biological conservation, as well as the social, philosophical and economic dimensions of land use strategies.
Students learn how the atmosphere, oceans, and freshwater systems interact to affect climate. Causes of greenhouse warming, energy production and alternatives are studied. A local case study focuses on planning for climate change on inter-annual, decadal, and centennial time scales. A goal of the course is to teach an appreciation of uncertainties and predictability in earth systems. A particular emphasis will be placed on the role of humans over the last centuries, in the perturbation of the natural climate. Students will learn how these perturbations can be characterized and distinguished from natural fluctuations. The course will also examine an integrated view of the Earth’s energy budget, structure and circulation of the atmosphere and the ocean, and the interaction between oceans and atmosphere.
Students are introduced to the hydrologic cycle, as well as to processes governing water quantity and quality. Students learn how the atmosphere, oceans, and freshwater systems interact to affect the hydrological cycle and climate. The course focuses on basic physical principles (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, stream flow, percolation, and groundwater flow), as well as environmentally relevant applications based on case studies. Students are exposed to water issues from global to regional scales, and to the ways that humans affect water availability in surface and groundwater systems.
The course teaches basic techniques for understanding particular environments and the key chemical processes of environmental science, including those that have to do with pollution generation and control. The purpose of the course is to teach students how to analyze chemical information that they will encounter as environmental managers. The focus is on chemical contaminants on local-to global-scale levels. Students learn how these contaminants are influenced by the physical, chemical, and biological processes that naturally take place in ecosystems.
The purpose of this course is to foster an understanding of how environmental scientists think and solve environmental issues, and to develop an expertise in assessing the validity of scientific research and its conclusions. The course explores the effects of contaminants on human health and the health of other living beings within an ecosystem. While toxicologists study a wide variety of toxicants, from naturally occurring poisons (venoms) to synthetic chemicals, this course will emphasize anthropogenic toxicants, and whether and how exposure to these chemicals should be controlled.
The course examines and emphasizes the basic principles of financial accounting and finance (from the financial manager's perspective) and is sufficiently general to be of interest to all graduate students. We will begin by introducing how financial information is communicated and furthermore used to forecast the financial performance of a firm. Next, we discuss how financial markets and institutions function and are organized with a global perspective. We then present the framework for asset valuation. Finally, we study the capital structure of the firm and how managers can optimize the value of a firm conditional on the choice of financing.
