Calculus I
Material includes the study of limits, derivatives, and applications of derivatives, as well as an introduction to integrals. Success in this course requires intense commitment to study and collaboration both in and out of class, along with active participation during class, and the ability to follow both written and verbal directions.
The overarching objective of the course is for students to develop conceptual fluency and computational competence working with limits, derivatives, and their applications. Students will enhance their quantitative reasoning, particularly through interpreting/analyzing charts and graphs in the study of limits and derivatives. Problem solving skills will be augmented through applied word problems, particularly relating to optimization, related rates, and graphing. Writing justifications/explanations for answers on all graded work will expand students' ability to clearly communicate mathematical ideas in writing. While collaborative projects will advance their ability to do so orally and visually.

ASTR UN1404: In this course, we will explore how stars, galaxies, and the Universe formed and changed over time. We will have a combination of lectures, class discussions, and hands-ons activities to examine concepts including: distances to, and fundamental properties of, nearby stars; nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution; novae and supernovae; galaxies; the structure of the universe and theories concerning its origin, evolution, and

Introduction to the techniques of research employed in the study of human behavior. Students gain experience in the conduct of research, including design of simple experiments, observation and measurement techniques, and the analysis of behavioral data.
This course examines the rapidly evolving social, cultural, behavioral, political, and socioeconomic dimensions of public health in community, national, regional, and global contexts. We consider how health as well as the generation of knowledge about health are being continually re-shaped by factors such as age, gender, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, social class, geography, and interactions within physical and digital environments. We learn how to analyze dynamic public health problems and identify agile solutions by casting light on individual risk factors as well as larger structural forces. We consider how social media enables the rapid proliferation of hotly contested messages and information about the rights of the individual versus the welfare of the public. Finally, we critically examine the ways in which our understandings of health and well-being perpetually shape, and are shaped by, health care systems in flux, the mediation of our own values, and our changing assumptions about the world. "Gone Viral: Public Health in a Global Context" is an exploration of the spread of pathogens and other health threats as well as the spread of ideas and knowledge about them via social media and other platforms. The course is offered twice during the NextGen Leadership Institute (NGLI); students may choose to register for either Session I or Session II. The course is structured around nine (9) in-person sessions that meet during a three-week period. The format combines interactive lectures with discussion-based seminars. The course introduces students to fundamental concepts and issues in public health. Students read selected excerpts from public health textbooks, public health journals, and popular magazines. Short videos, social media content, and documentary films supplement the readings, providing a diversified basis for lively collegial debate. Concurrent with class sessions, students also engage in basic research outside of the classroom by conducting rapid ethnographic assessment. Research methods include observational exercises in public spaces, recruitment of and informal interviews with respondents, small group assignments within walking distance of campus, and participant-observation in online spaces where public health ideas are evinced and negotiated. Introductory course to analog photographic tools, techniques, and photo criticism. This class explores black & white, analog camera photography and darkroom processing and printing. Areascovered include camera operations, black and white darkroom work, 8x10 print production, and critique. With an emphasis on the student’s own creative practice, this course will explore the basics of photography and its history through regular shooting assignments, demonstrations, critique, lectures, and readings. No prior photography experience is required.
Since Walter Benjamin’s concept of “work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction” (1935), photography has been continuously changed by mechanical, and then digital, means of image capture and processing. This class explores the history of the image, as a global phenomenon that accompanied industrialization, conflict, racial reckonings, and decolonization. Students will study case studies, read critical essays, and get hands-on training in capture, workflow, editing, output, and display formats using digital equipment (e.g., DSLR camera) and software (e.g., Lightroom, Photoshop, Scanning Software). Students will complete weekly assignments, a midterm project, and a final project based on research and shooting assignments. No Prerequisites and no equipment needed. All enrolled students will be able to check out Canon EOS 5D DSLR Camera; receive an Adobe Creative Cloud license; and get access to Large Format Print service.
A photography exhibition is a form of “show and tell” that combines a photographer’s creativity with the audience’s interaction (applause, excitement, boredom, learning). This course explores historic and modern photography exhibitions designed by curators, organizations, and artists. We explore the ways a photograph breathes in the “living” world as compared to the “static” world of newspapers, magazines, or photobooks. Making use of New York’s vast cultural network, we will go on field trips to public museums, commercial galleries, and independent spaces in Chelsea, Downtown, Long Island City, Bronx, etc. Students will design a mini-exhibition as their final project. Students will maintain a daily
Reflection Journal
to document their experiences at each location, capturing the ideas discussed and materials presented. The journal serves as a creative space for exploring the topics covered in the course and for developing concepts for the final project. The Final Project will be a collectively curated one-day exhibition on campus.
This course explores the photobook as a central medium of lens-based contemporary art practice and bookmaking. You will be exposed to a variety of geographies (Japan, USA, Europe, Latin America, Africa), approaches (formal book, luxury volume, grassroots zine, national archive, art object), subject matters (autobiography, fiction, historical, journalism, epic events), and materials. Using Columbia’s world-famous library holdings, many photo and art books and a diverse range of viewpoints will be studied through historical lectures and New York City field trips. Students will learn hands-on processes of photobook and fanzine making.

Students will participate in a practicum hosted at the University of Cambridge (UCAM). They will work with 20 to 30 psychology students on the
Junior Research Programme
from multiple universities and countries who will join the practicum, along with over 100 other research collaborators. The objective is for students to get hands-on experience in carrying out behavioral science research, from study development to dissemination, while participating in a large, international collaboration. Specific skills to be acquired include multicultural teamwork, research design, data collection (internationally), data analysis, scientific writing, and academic presentation. Students are encouraged to engage in the publication and revision process, subject to feasibility. All contributors will receive authorship credit.

"The Core as Praxis/Fieldwork” provides students with the opportunity to explore the connections among texts from the Core Curriculum, their work in their major field of study, and their work in a professional environment outside of Columbia’s campus. Students will be guided through a process of reflection on the ideas and approaches that they develop in Core classes and in the courses in their major, to think about how they can apply theory to practice in the context of an internship or other experiential learning environment. Students will reread and revisit a text that they have studied previously in Literature Humanities or in Contemporary Civilization as the basis for their reading and writing assignments over the semester.

This 28-day course is an immersion in Parisian culture from the point of view of the dancer. The course is divided into three major components: technique, composition, and history. Students will take a series of technique classes in modern, ballet, improvisation, world dance forms, and yoga, taught by Barnard/USF and international guest faculty, as well as opportunities to take alternative technique classes in some of Paris’s professional dance studios. Students will be exposed to the rich artistic side of Paris through lectures and performances, as well as assigned readings by major dancers/writers/artists who have drawn on the Parisian landscape as inspiration for their work.
A final choreographic project based on compositional exercises that will take students to various Parisian locales, will be presented during the final week of the course. We will also visit many important locations essential to studying the history of dance in Western culture, including Versailles, Théâtre de la Ville and the Paris Opera.

Urbanism reflects the global shift from agricultural to predominantly urban societies, in which people’s primary relationships are increasingly shaped by proximity to one another rather than proximity to land. This course examines the political and economic forces that shape cities and evaluates how urbanization affects human welfare in both the Global South and Global North. The course is designed as an intensive summer seminar meeting six times for extended sessions.

Mental disorders have historically been distinguished from other medical illnesses because they affect the higher cognitive processes that are referred to as the “mind”. Neuroscience offers one way for understanding mental disorders, asserting that the mind is a manifestation of brain activity, thereby categorizing these disorders as essentially brain disorders. This course explores the ongoing search for the brain correlates of mental disorders and the significant impact this search has had on our contemporary understanding of mental health. Engaging with review and research papers on schizophrenia, autism spectrum, and mood disorders, students will learn to interpret experimental evidence in Neuroscience and to evaluate known theories through both supporting and non-supporting evidence. While the course acknowledges neuroscience's progress in understanding mental disorders, it also considers some of the problems encountered in viewing them as essentially biological phenomena: Can brain-based explanations capture the lived experience of mental disorders? Could these disorders also originate from outside the brain? How should they be treated, and should they be always treated?

architectural analysis and design experimentation.

ways, the studio will focus on how architecture negotiates, alters or redirects multiple forces in our world:
physical, cultural, social, technological, political etc. The semester progresses through two projects that examine
unique atmospheric, spatial and urban conditions with the aid of multimedia visual techniques; and that employ
design to develop critical and creative interventions at different scales. Learning analog and digital drawing
techniques, physical model-making, and multimedia image production, students will work in the studio and
digital architecture lab. The course includes site visits and field trips in the city.
NOTE: The course may be used to fulfill major requirements. It can replace: ARCH 2101 Architectural Design:
Environment Mediations OR ARCH 2103 Architectural Design: Systems and Materials. OR students may use it as

Linear algebra with a focus on probability and statistics. The course covers the standard linear algebra topics: systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, bases, dimension, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, the Spectral Theorem and singular value decompositions. It also teaches applications of linear algebra to probability, statistics and dynamical systems giving a background sufficient for higher level courses in probability and statistics. The topics covered in the probability theory part include conditional probability, discrete and continuous random variables, probability distributions and the limit theorems, as well as Markov chains, curve fitting, regression, and pattern analysis. The course contains applications to life sciences, chemistry, and environmental life sciences. No a priori background in the life sciences is assumed.
This course is best suited for students who wish to focus on applications and practical approaches to problem solving. It is recommended to students majoring in engineering, technology, life sciences, social sciences, and economics.

This course explores the creative and technical potential of smartphone photography, focusing on accessible tools and workflows that empower students to produce compelling digital works. The curriculum emphasizes post-production and digital media techniques over traditional camera mastery. Students will develop foundational skills in Adobe Suite applications, including Lightroom and Photoshop for photo editing and After Effects and Premiere for video production. We will also discuss the integration of artificial intelligence in modern photography, examining how AI enhances editing processes and opens new creative possibilities. A significant part of the course will address fundamental questions of light in photography, the use of RAW formats—offered by many smartphones but seldom understood—and the structure of digital image files. Students will also learn about post-production techniques for preparing images for print, as well as for projection or display on digital screens, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end digital photography workflow. Thinking Locally: Street photography serves as a central theme in this course, encouraging students to document the vibrant life of New York City through weekly assignments. A guided photo walk in Harlem will provide hands-on experience in capturing unique, candid moments. Ethical considerations will be a key focus, addressing topics like consent, privacy, and best practices for interacting with subjects. Discussions will be complemented by readings, critiques, and a guest lecture from a professional street photographer. By the end of the course, students will have transformed their understanding of smartphone photography, creating works that push the boundaries of accessible technology while building a strong foundation in contemporary digital media.

This course explores the creative and technical potential of smartphone photography, focusing on accessible tools and workflows that empower students to produce compelling digital works. The curriculum emphasizes post-production and digital media techniques over traditional camera mastery. Students will develop foundational skills in Adobe Suite applications, including Lightroom and Photoshop for photo editing and After Effects and Premiere for video production. We will also discuss the integration of artificial intelligence in modern photography, examining how AI enhances editing processes and opens new creative possibilities. A significant part of the course will address fundamental questions of light in photography, the use of RAW formats—offered by many smartphones but seldom understood—and the structure of digital image files. Students will also learn about post-production techniques for preparing images for print, as well as for projection or display on digital screens, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end digital photography workflow. Thinking Locally: Street photography serves as a central theme in this course, encouraging students to document the vibrant life of New York City through weekly assignments. A guided photo walk in Harlem will provide hands-on experience in capturing unique, candid moments. Ethical considerations will be a key focus, addressing topics like consent, privacy, and best practices for interacting with subjects. Discussions will be complemented by readings, critiques, and a guest lecture from a professional street photographer. By the end of the course, students will have transformed their understanding of smartphone photography, creating works that push the boundaries of accessible technology while building a strong foundation in contemporary digital media.

This course is designed as travellers guide to medieval Europe. Its purpose is to provide a window to a long-lost world that provided the foundation of modern institutions and that continues to inspire the modern collective artistic and literary imagination with its own particularities. This course will not be a conventional history course concentrating on the grand narratives in the economic, social and political domains but rather intend to explore the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants, and attempts to have a glimpse of their mindset, their emotional spectrum, their convictions, prejudices, fears and hopes. It will be at once a historical, sociological and anthropological study of one of the most inspiring ages of European civilization. Subjects to be covered will include the birth and childhood, domestic life, sex and marriage, craftsmen and artisans, agricultural work, food and diet, the religious devotion, sickness and its cures, death, after death (purgatory and the apparitions), travelling, merchants and trades, inside the nobles castle, the Christian cosmos, and medieval technology. The lectures will be accompanied by maps, images of illuminated manuscripts and of medieval objects. Students will be required to attend a weekly discussion section to discuss the medieval texts bearing on that weeks subject. The written course assignment will be a midterm, final and two short papers, one an analysis of a medieval text and a second an analysis of a modern text on the Middle Ages.

Political theory examines the ideas and institutions that shape political life. This course introduces key texts and arguments about the best way to organize political power, how it should be used, and for what purpose.
We will address these larger questions by studying how major thinkers, ancient and modern, analyzed political diversity, division, and conflict. What are the sources of conflicting identities, interests, passions, and values in politics? How can partisanship and contestation avoid degenerating into open war and unjust domination? Which institutions, laws, and practices are best able to manage conflict consistent with other political goals, such as freedom, equality, justice?

The course focuses on those drugs which have abuse and dependence potential with specific emphasis on Alcohol and the Depressants, the Psychostimulants, and the Opiates. A primary objective is to provide insight into factors which contribute to challenges with substances for some individuals and to better understand their felt and lived experience with drugs.

How have artists been inspired by New York City’s architecture, street life, natural environment, and rich cultural history to make performances that reach outside traditional performance venues? What practical, artistic, economic, and social concerns shape this kind of impulse? In what ways have artists repurposed existing spaces for artistic activity, and in some cases, permanently transformed a site? This is a studio course in which students gain inspiration from notable examples of site-specific artworks in New York City, while also engaging in a series of hands-on activities and site-specific performance assignments which will be presented on the Barnard campus. In this course, students will gain familiarity with some of the major questions and theoretical frameworks in the American Politics subfield of political science and learn how to think theoretically and empirically about politics.
As the first half of a one-year program for intermediate Chinese learners, this course helps students consolidate and develop language skills used in everyday communication. Texts are presented in the form of dialogues and narratives that provide language situations, sentence patterns, word usage, and cultural information. This course will enable students to conduct everyday tasks such as shopping for cell phone plans, opening a bank account, seeing a doctor, or renting a place to live. At the end of the course, students will be ready to move on to the second half of the program, which focuses on aspects of Chinese culture such as the social norms of politeness and gift-giving. Semi-formal and literary styles will also be introduced as students transition to more advanced levels of Chinese language study. While providing training for everyday communication skills, Second Year Chinese aims to improve the student's linguistic competence in preparation for advanced studies in Mandarin.

phenomena in areas such as attention, memory, concepts and categories, language, reasoning,
decision making, and consciousness.

This class offers insight through composing, analysis, and performance for the composer, singer/songwriter, and performance artist. Coupling specifics of rhythm, melody, and harmony with story telling, lyric writing and the voice itself, students will be encouraged to share their imagination in song regardless of style, genre, or aesthetic. Music ranging from Chant to Music Theatre, the German lied to international pop fusion will be included as models upon which to base discussion and creative endeavor. Improvisation and musicianship techniques will complement pedagogical presentations of tonal and non - tonal compositional practice. A required final project based on any combination of composition, analysis, and performance, and in any media will be due at the end of the semester. All levels of experience and all types of instruments are welcome. Notation software is recommended but not required.
The purpose of this course is to provide a basic introduction to accounting, including the
foundations of accounting concepts, the underlying mechanics, and the overall perspective required
to become intelligent users of accounting information. The course will focus on the main
financial statements, the nature of accrual measurement, and the information perspective. In addition,
we will explore some accounting methods in detail, such as revenue recognition, assets,
liabilities, and equity.
The overarching perspective is that accounting reports provide information that is useful for
a variety of purposes. In the course, I will also provide insights into how the financial markets
use accounting information to evaluate executives, predict future stock returns, assess firms’
riskiness, and allocate society’s resources to their most productive uses.

The semester begins with a survey of the central elements that unite a diverse community of Muslim peoples from a variety of geographical and cultural backgrounds. This includes a look at the Prophet and the Qur'an and the ways in which both were actualized in the development of ritual, jurisprudence, theology, and sufism/mysticism. The course then shifts to the modern period, examining the impact of colonization and the rise of liberal secularism on the Muslim world. The tension between traditional Sunni and Shi'i systems of authority and movements for 'modernization' and/or 'reform' feature prominently in these readings. Topics range from intellectual attempts at societal/religious reform (e.g. Islamic Revivalism, Modernism, Progressivism) and political re-interpretations of traditional Islamic motifs (e.g. Third-Worldism and Jihadist discourse) to efforts at accommodating scientific and technological innovations (e.g. evolution, bioethics ). The class ends by examining the efforts of American and European Muslim communities to carve out distinct spheres of identity in the larger global Muslim community ( umma) through expressions of popular culture (e.g. Hip-Hop).

Prerequisites: PSYC UN1001 or equivalent Traditional psychologists have focused primarily on answering “how?” questions regarding the mechanisms that underlie behavior (i.e. How does the system work?). In contrast, evolutionary psychologists focus primarily on answering “why?” questions (i.e. Why does this system exist, and why does it have the form it does?). This course is designed to apply our knowledge of evolutionary theory to psychology in order to answer such questions.
The course examines the modern atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and other components of the Earth’s climate system, and considers how they have changed in the past. Topics include global energy balance, greenhouse gases, thermodynamics of the atmosphere, moisture and clouds, ocean biology, chemistry and physics. The general circulation of the atmosphere as well as the surface and deep ocean will be considered from first principles and modern observations. Multiple intervals of Earth’s past will be considered, including substantially warmer and colder periods than the modern, as well as the repeated oscillations between glaciations and interglacial episodes of the past two million years. Some emphasis will be place on relatively rapid climate changes that have occurred naturally in the past, and the course will conclude with a consideration of recent trends and future projections.

Designed to provide an introduction to data science for sophomore SEAS majors. Combines three perspectives: inferential thinking, computational thinking, and real-world applications. Given data arising from some real-world phenomenon, how does one analyze that data so as to understand that phenomenon? Teaches critical concepts and skills in computer programming, statistical inference, and machine learning, in conjunction with hands-on analysis of real-world datasets such as economic data, document collections, geographical data, and social networks. At least one project will address a problem relevant to New York City.
The course provides a broad overview of the comparative politics subfield by focusing on important substantive questions about the world today. Particular attention will be paid to understanding differences between democracies and autocracies, on one hand, and between different forms of democracy, on the other. What influences whether countries become and/or stay democratic? On this basis, should we expect China to democratize? Why do we care if a country is democratic or not? Do democracies perform better (or worse) than non-democracies in policy areas of importance? What is “good representation” and how do political institutions affect the prospects for achieving it? How does the choice of democratic institutions influence the prospects for stable and successful democracy? Are there particular institutional forms that are appropriate in particular contexts (such as ethnically divided Iraq), or do cultural factors overwhelm institutional considerations?
In addressing these broad questions, the course has three ancillary goals. The first is to teach students how to pose and evaluate falsifiable theoretical arguments about substantive questions of interest. The second is to introduce the quantitative, formal and qualitative methodologies that political scientists use to develop and evaluate arguments. Finally, the course will require students to develop knowledge of the political systems of a number of foreign countries.
