This course provides a comprehensive set of financial management tools for nonprofit professionals, including managers and staff, whether they oversee financial statements and reporting or need to translate financial statements and reporting across stakeholders. This course emphasizes the requirements for nonprofits in recording and budgeting the financials to support the organization’s mission. Additionally, the course will provide students with the ability to analyze financial statements and answer financial questions typically asked by stakeholders such as the governing board, donors, the public, beneficiaries, media, and regulators. Finally, the course will identify the risks and opportunities found in an organization's financial information to increase the public's confidence in and understanding of the organization's mission and operations.
In this course, students will develop a working knowledge of the practical application of analysis and models used to make management decisions within an organization and a professional league. Basketball Analytics will explore the use of data and statistics to inform decision making in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Utilizing data made available through the NBA and other publicly available resources, students will learn to use analytics to ask and answer the right questions and provide best practice solutions through critical thinking.
The ethics of medicine, biology, and psychology deeply influence our ideas about gender and sexuality and how we establish what is “normal” about our sexed bodies. Even the most basic questions about gender identity, for example, or how we distinguish male from female (or that we distinguish at all), have been shaped by the culture of science and medicine.
In this class, we will examine traditional gender and sex binaries, including how they have been prescribed and enforced throughout American medical history, up to the present day. For example, people have always been born with intersex traits, and yet only in recent times have physicians intervened to manage such births. Before the 1840s, in the U.S. those born with intersex traits lived their lives the best they could, despite their physical differences, largely without medical interference. Since the 19th century, however, physicians have tried to surgically “correct” people (adults) with atypical genitals, even if that surgical management was medically unnecessary and conflicted with the person’s gender identity. Since the 1950s, providers have sought to “fix” those born with intersex conditions in infancy, before their gender identities had a chance to develop. Though physicians thought they were helping their patients live better lives, the principles we now associate with bioethics (autonomy and informed consent, for example) were too often neglected and took a backseat to physicians’ assumptions about what “better lives” might entail.

Students will learn hands-on strategies for fostering inclusion at every level of the organization, and how and why it matters on the overall culture and climate of the organization in a systematic way. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the grants process, with specific reference to the research, writing, and managing of a range of grant types. The grants process is considered within the context of an institution’s total fundraising strategy as well as its overall mission-based goals. The course covers the range of possible grant-giving institutions, including government, corporate, and foundation, as well as the various types of grants, such as challenge, and their respective considerations for the fundraiser and nonprofit institution. Provides the opportunity to learn how business units operate at an investment bank. Several industry practitioners each spend one to two sessions providing a hands-on experience that recreates the operations and decision-making of front, middle, and back offices work at a bank. Students typically learn the common activities, the data inputs, the analytics, and the applications of the insights.
This is an introductory pharmacology course, and, since pharmacology is an applied science, it builds on several foundational concepts of biology, chemistry, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology in the context of nursing practice. Principles of pharmacology will be discussed, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and toxicities. Major pharmacologic agents used in treating more common disease states will be discussed with emphasis on relating the mechanism of action to the therapeutic use.
In this elective course, students will examine the theory and practice of labor relations as context for exploring new and emerging unionization trends. It is intended to provide students with competencies to understand why workers seek union representation, understand the legal and regulatory framework surrounding labor relations, and develop critical thinking skills to address changing expectations around DEIA, business ethics, and generational pressures. Grounded in a review of the labor movement’s historical underpinnings in the U.S. and globally (ex. China, Japan, Korea, EU, Great Britain), the course will provide a comprehensive examination of labor relations topics ranging from union organizing, collective bargaining and contract administration, to incipient issues such as unionization in new industries and work groups, the impact of shareholder and customer pressures, and potential contradictions between a company’s stated ethical principles and its day-to-day labor relations decisions.

Capstone projects afford a group of students the opportunity to undertake complex, real-world, client-based projects for nonprofit organizations, supervised by a Nonprofit Management program faculty member. Through the semester-long capstone project, students will experience the process of organizational assimilation and integration as they tackle a discrete management project of long or short-term benefit to the client organization. The larger theoretical issues that affect nonprofit managers and their relationships with other stakeholders, both internal and external, will also be discussed within the context of this project-based course.
Digital, social, and mobile media continue to heavily impact every aspect of sports business, often in profound and unanticipated ways, particularly in managing and optimizing revenue streams. All revenue line items are fully intertwined and integrated with each other, media, sponsorship, ticketing, hospitality, concessions and licensing, etc. Students of this course will learn to analyze and optimize the ecosystem of sports business including content rights, ticketing, sponsorship, merchandising, marketing, etc., as well as make business analytics decisions by leveraging business analytics software to run scenario analysis.
This course is intended to provide a mechanism to MA students in Statistics who undertake on-campus project work or research. This course provides coverage of modern database architecture and how organizations extract, transform, and load data to set the foundation for deep analytics within their organization. Students will develop a broad understanding of cloud-based computing environments such as Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure, MapReduce and data parallel applications using Hadoop, noSQL databases such as MongoDB. Students will learn how to develop a strong working knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, structured and unstructured data, as well as scalability and performance issues as they relate to modern applied analytics. Students will cover different types and scales of data and how to apply the best database framework for their organization’s analytic needs. The course will provide case studies from industry and students will apply their knowledge to architect real business solutions, not only the optimal architectural framework but the total costs, including hardware, software and human costs, to implement such a solution.
This course provides the tools to measure and manage market risk in the context of large financial institutions. The volume and complexity of the data itself, at large institutions, makes it a challenge to generate actionable information. We will take on this challenge to master the path from data to decisions.
We cover the essential inputs to the engines of financial risk management: VaR, Expected Exposure, Potential Exposure, Expected Shortfall, backtesting, and stress testing as they apply to asset management and trading. We explore the strengths and weaknesses of these different metrics and the tradeoffs between them. We also cover how regulatory frameworks impact both the details and the strategy of building these engines. Lastly, we cover counterparty-credit methodologies, mainly as they apply to Trading Book risk.

This course introduces students to cloud computing concepts and practices ranging from infrastructure and administration to services and applications. The course is primarily focused on the development of practical skills in utilizing cloud services to build distributed and scalable analytics applications. Students will have hands-on exposure to VMs (Virtual Machines), databases, storage, microservices, and AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) services through Google Cloud Platform, et al. Cost and performance characteristics of alternative approaches will also be studied. Topics include: overview of cloud computing, cloud systems, parallel processing in the cloud, distributed storage systems, virtualization, security in the cloud, and multicore operating systems. Applied Coding for Risk Management takes your ability to use code to the next level. This course is for students who have taken Coding for Risk Management. The goal of that course is to give you the ability to get risk management related work done with code. The goal of this course is to give you the ability to code in collaboration with teams in order to build and deploy risk models on large data sets. The course is highly structured and organized by topic into semester long learning threads. Each week, readings and assignments will take another step forward along these threads: Python and collaborative coding, SQL for business intelligence, data analysis and visualization, cloud-based infrastructure, simulation for risk management, financial data processing, and API’s.
Throughout history, societies have discovered resources, designed and developed them into textiles,
tools and structures, and bartered and exchanged these goods based on their respective values.
Economies emerged, driven by each society’s needs and limited by the resources and technology
available to them. Over the last two centuries, global development accelerated due in large part to the
overextraction and use of finite resources, whether for energy or materials, and supported by vast
technological advancements. However, this economic model did not account for the long-term impacts of
the disposal or depletion of these finite resources and instead, carried on unreservedly in a “take-make’-
waste” manner, otherwise known as a linear economy. Despite a more profound understanding of our
planet’s available resources, the environmental impact of disposal and depletion, and the technological
advancements of the last several decades, the economic heritage of the last two centuries persists today;
which begs the question: what alternatives are there to a linear economy?
The premise of this course is that through systems-thinking, interdisciplinary solutions for an alternative
economic future are available to us. By looking at resources’ potential, we can shape alternative methods
of procurement, design, application, and create new market demands that aim to keep materials,
products and components in rotation at their highest utility and value. This elective course will delve into
both the theory of a circular economy - which would be a state of complete systemic regeneration and
restoration as well as an optimized use of resources and zero waste - and the practical applications
required in order to achieve this economic model. Achieving perfect circularity represents potentially
transformative systemic change and requires a fundamental re-think of many of our current economic
structures, systems and processes.

Technology executives need to understand the disruption and opportunities that decentralized ledgers (i.e., Blockchains) will create in the coming years. Indeed, the business impact of Blockchain technologies will likely be much larger than that which the internet itself has had because Blockchain will fundamentally change the power dynamic of data ownership. Blockchain is already impacting a variety of industries, and in this class we will look specifically at its analytical implications.
This course addresses two key components of financial planning: retirement and
insurance. Students will be exposed to the various options available for clients
planning for retirement and the benefits and costs of various insurance
plans. Students will learn how to conduct a requirement needs analysis as they
explore the various types of retirement plans and the rules, options, regulatory and
taxation considerations that impact those plans. The course will also provide
overviews of the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid systems. The course will
also provide an analysis and evaluation of risk exposure types for which a client
might want insurance, including liability, automobile, homeowner’s, health,
disability, long-term care, and life risks. Students will learn how to conduct
insurance needs analysis and to select appropriate insurance policies and
companies for their clients.

With an orientation more towards practical application, the intent of this course is to provide a strategic framework with which students can evaluate and understand the global financial services industry of both today and tomorrow. In this course we are defining global financial services as encompassing central banks, commercial and investment banks, asset/wealth management institutions and financial regulators. Via case studies, proprietary materials, class based problem solving exercises, and guest lectures, we will examine and discuss the i) current and future role of the major financial service participants, (ii) key drivers influencing an industry that has always been characterized by significant change (e.g., regulatory, technology, risk, globalization, and client needs), and (iii) challenges and opportunities facing today's financial services' CEOs post the 2008/09 financial crisis. This course focuses on the 3C’s of wealth management: communications,
counseling and client relationship management. The first half of the course will
focus on both the theoretical foundations as well as best practices associated with
client communication and counseling. The overall objective is for the learner to
develop a variety of tools to develop deeper relationships with clients through a
variety of different communication tools. This case-based course blends both
theory and active learning, where students will observe and demonstrate effective
oral and written communication within a client-planner interaction.
The second half of the course will focus on client relationship management over
the entire life-cycle of the client, from business development to generational
transfer of wealth. Students will develop the necessary skills to both attract new
clients as well as to develop deeper relationships throughout the wealth
management process. Students will also learn to analyze their clients and structure
persuasive, ethical, and compelling messages in written and verbal channels. In
addition, this course will discuss how technology is utilized to better connect with
clients including the ability to integrate reporting, analytics and performance to
provide more sophisticated and customized advice.
Data AI and Technology in Insurance
The course intends to give an overview of forests – how they function, and how they can be managed sustainably. The course addresses both the ecology and economics of forests. Combining the study of these two disciplines is necessary to understand and develop management actions and solutions to deforestation. The emphasis in integrating ecology and economics is going to be on learning tools and techniques for managing forests. The course accounts both for North American and forests in other countries, including tropical ones. Current typical conceptions of forests are somewhat paradoxical: forests are considered marginal in sustainability, and yet they connect with many issues of central concern such as biodiversity, climate change, household energy for the poor, homelands for indigenous people, water and human shelter, to name a few. More specifically, forests provide a fruitful line of inquiry into many environmental issues, such as the complex balances within ecosystems, global cycling of elements, such as carbon, the nature of sustainability, and interactions between economic development and the conservation of nature. For example, we will study biodiversity in forests. Much biodiversity is found outside of forests, but our study will provide an understanding of the ecological dynamics involved with biodiversity, the possible management options, and its importance for human survival. The course is going to emphasize the role of forests in the carbon cycle and the contribution of deforestation to climate change.

The Skills Practicum: Self as Instrument course develops students’ capacity to act as reflective practitioners of constructive conflict resolution. Building on theories presented in Introduction to Negotiation and Introduction to Mediation, the course provides students with many opportunities to develop self-awareness and to practice the skills of negotiation, mediation, and facilitation.
To intervene as skilled practitioners, conflict-resolution professionals need to understand both what they themselves bring to the table as well as the appropriate strategies and communicative skills for effective conflict management. Along with those skills, they require a deep understanding of how their own worldview shapes their biases and perspectives to form the lens that they use to view and respond to conflict.
Students bring their own unique experiences, insights and communicative strengths to the learning process. This course seeks to build on these contributions, providing (1) tools for deepening self-awareness as a means of advancing connection to others, (2) opportunities for strengthening their face-to-face communication skills as negotiators and as mediators, and (3) techniques for developing their skills as third-party facilitators.
Teams will work through a case assignment, demonstrating mastery of key learnings gained throughout the program on an integrated basis. A simulated case study is used: this is a combination of publicly-available information of an actual company and simulated ERM program details, based on a blend of current ERM programs and practices in the marketplace. Quality health care is dependent on consistent, systematic, and collaborative efforts of all healthcare personnel through the shared priority objective of positive patient outcomes. In this practicum on Quality Improvement, students will apply concepts of the NURSN5950 Nursing Leadership and Management course and engage in established healthcare quality improvement initiatives. This interactive course explores quality improvement, research processes, knowledge of health-care systems, and innovative corrective measures as it relates to safe, effective nursing practice. Through the support of student group-led analysis and discussion of selected quality improvement measures, students will explore strategies and roadmaps to quality healthcare through the lens of multidisciplinary collaboration and nursing leadership.
Projects are research intensive and vary according to partners and specialty.
Advanced standing in the Sports Management program, with at least 12 points/credits (4 courses) completed is required. A student may not exceed 6 points/credits (2 courses) of Supervised Projects, or take more than 3 points/credits (1 course) per semester.

This course requires you to experience firsthand a program-related job in a real working environment. You will engage in personal, environmental and organizational reflection. The ideal Internship will provide you an opportunity to gain tangible and practical knowledge in your chosen field by taking on a position that is closely aligned with your coursework and professional interests. Before registering for this course, you must have completed the Internship Application Form in which you will describe your internship sponsor and provide details about the work that you will be doing. This form must be signed by your internship supervisor and approved by your program director BEFORE you register for this course.
