Anarchist Thought, Art, and Action

Anarchist Thought, Art &

Anarchy is Order!” proclaims the modern anarchist movement. The anarchist values not violence and chaos, but democracy, solidarity, and freedom from all forms of coercion. The ideal society is antiauthoritarian and decentralized, comprised of voluntary associations of free and equal individuals. In this course we will dissect these ideas, debating anarchist conceptions of freedom, authority, and human nature, beginning with late 18th-19th c. figures (Godwin, Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, Tolstoy) and ending with more recent developments in this tradition (ecological thought, indigeneity, gender). We will engage with these ideas as expressed in political essays, but also in art (drama, poetry, visual art, fairytales, children’s literature, science fiction), and in autobiographical writing. How, we may ask, are anarchist values and critique formulated differently in these different modes of expression? What is the place of art and aesthetic experience in a radically liberatory movement? Readings will be studied in their historical contexts, especially moments of revolutionary action: across Europe in 1848, in Russia and Ukraine (1917-1921), during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), led by the Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico (1994-).

This course will prepare students to be leaders in developing innovative sustainable frameworks and solutions. Agent of Change: Ukrainian Art Between R

This course examines Ukrainian visual art at the forefront of geopolitical and social change from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Foundational theories of the avant-garde, nonconformist art, and dissident culture will be studied alongside some of the most celebrated and influential examples of innovative and radical art from the region. We will begin with nineteenth-century paintings of Ukrainian subjects and the work of Ukrainian-born artists in the Russian Empire before turning to the Soviet period. Topics will include artists' responses to the Bolshevik Revolution, the founding of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, and the eventual decline of the avant-garde paradigm. Officially sanctioned Socialist Realist art will be examined alongside its specifically Ukrainian dimensions. The course will also explore the emergence of unofficial culture, the revival of avant-garde practices during the Khrushchev era, and the dissident movement in Ukraine. Finally, we will study the rise of contemporary Ukrainian art during Gorbachev's perestroika, its development after independence, and its responses to the Orange Revolution, the Euromaidan Revolution, and the Russian-Ukrainian War.

THE NOVEL IN AFRICA

The main task of this course will be to read novels by African writers. But the novel in Africa also involves connections between the literary genre of the novel and the historical processes of colonialism, decolonization, and globalization in Africa. One important question we'll consider is how African novels depict those historical experiences in their themes and plots—we'll read novels that are about colonialism, etc. A more complex question is how these historical processes relate to the emergence of the novel as an important genre for African writers. Edward Said went so far as to say that without imperialism, there would be no European novel as we know it. How can we understand the novel in Africa (whether read or written) as a product of the colonial encounter? How did it shape the process of decolonization? What contribution to history, whether literary or political, does the novel in Africa make? We'll undertake a historical survey of African novels from the 1930s to the present, with attention to various subgenres (village novel, war novel, urbanization novel, novel of postcolonial disillusion, Bildungsroman). We'll attend to how African novelists blend literate and oral storytelling traditions, how they address their work to local and global audiences, and how they use scenes of characters reading novels (whether African or European) in order to position their writing within national, continental, and world literary space.

Russian Through Music

This content-based language course is designed for students who already have an equivalent of five semesters of college-level Russian. The course aims to explore various types of Russian music that have been popular since the 1960s. Popular music expresses widely-shared trends and interests of society and evokes emotions and associations via memories. Sharing these musical associations will enhance students’ knowledge of Russian values and beliefs, and help them understand how and why these values and beliefs have changed since the thaw period, as well as how they continue to change in the 21st century in response to social mood. Students will learn how to interpret popular music and work on the development of the language skills needed to be an engaged listener of Russian music as well as an engaged partner in conversations on related topics. Learners will use language in meaningful interactions and negotiate meaning in real-life contexts. Through engagement with authentic sources, students will solidify and further develop their knowledge of the case and verbal systems as well as cause-and-effect relationships within sentences and paragraphs. NATURE, RACE, AND INDIGENEITY IN THE U.S

“Nature” is one of the weirdest words in the English language—it can refer to human trait (“it is in her nature”), a nonhuman environment (“we walked in nature”), a divine power (“mother nature”), or a biological process (“nature calls”). Despite—and indeed, because of—these ambiguities, nature has played pivotal roles in the territory that has come to be known as the United States. In various guises, nature has inspired pilgrims, pioneers, and tourists. At the same time, nature has staged struggles between settlers and Natives, whites and racialized peoples, upper classes and working classes. In this seminar, we will learn how nature has brought us together and torn us apart. By engaging with a variety of media—from colonial-era captivity narratives to nineteenth-century abolitionist texts to contemporary Kumeyaay poetry—we will recover conflicting ideas of nature. And by reading in the environmental humanities—including history, anthropology, and literary criticism—we will discover how these ideas have impacted all-too-human identities and more-than-human entities. While our inquiries will take us from prehistory to the present, they will converge on the future: now that we are destroying our ecosystems, extinguishing our fellow species, and altering our atmosphere, is there still such a thing as nature? During the semester, we will navigate this tricky terrain both collectively and individually, with each undergraduate completing a four-to five-page theoretical essay, a fourteen- or fifteen-page research essay, and a natural history mini-exhibit, and with each graduate student preparing a presentation for our end-of-semester conference that they then revise as a seminar paper and/or repurpose by organizing a panel for a national conference.

Frankenstein and Its Vicissitudes

Overview: This class will carefully and searchingly read Mary Shelley’s 1818
Frankenstein
as well as her 1831 revision, using those two texts as the seeds for a much larger investigation about what the Frankenstein paradigm brought to later American literary and cinematic culture. We’ll look at how Mary Shelley developed the genre of science fiction from nothing, wrote the first recognizable book of horror in the English cannon, pioneering literary philosophical writing in the absence of a clear hero, and used her novel as a mechanism for thinking about reproductive violence, domestic abuse, and the social problem of male loneliness. From there, we’ll examine the Frankenfilms of the 20th and 21st century—many of which are excellent, but many of which are downright offensive—to think about what Shelley’s literary and philosophical paradigm contributed to Anglo-American cinematic discourse about patriarchy, power, sex, class, God, reproduction, fascism, and feminism.

Topics in Israeli Cinema

Israel has a unique and constantly-evolving national cinema, the product of its diverse immigrant population, influences from neighboring nations, and dramatic national history. Beginning with artistic influences from abroad and culminating with native self-examinations, this course will provide a survey of Israeli film history, recurring foci of Israeli cinema, and introductions to influential filmmakers from early director and impresario Menahem Golan to Orthodox writer/director Rama Burshtein.

Each class meeting will include a complete screening of an Israeli feature film, as well as clips of related works. Readings will include critical essays and histories which elaborate on in-class screenings and cover additional topics and films. Written assignments will be three analytical essays which will encourage critical thinking, close analysis of films, and independent research beyond the materials presented in class.

All readings are in English. All feature films and film clips are in Hebrew (some include Arabic), and will be presented with English subtitles. Students fluent in Hebrew and Arabic are encouraged to interpret the dialogue for additional meaning that may not be translated in the subtitles.

It is a comprehensive introductory water resource class that all sustainable-minded professionals should have.  The topics and materials studied in the class strikes a balance for management, business, science, and technical specialists. 

The sustainability of water has become an increasingly critical issue, and over the coming decade, as awareness and resources go into addressing public health, economics, growing development, climate and weather changes, and aging infrastructure. Water resources are affected by changes not only in climate but also in population, economic growth, technological and scientific changes, and other socioeconomic factors.  In addition, they serve a dual purpose; water resources are critical to both human society and natural ecosystems. The objective of this course is to provide a fundamental understanding of key global water challenges and hydrological processes in the natural and built environment.  We will then use this understanding to explore aspects of sustainable strategies for integrated and climate-resilient water resources management.  We will explore the roles of humans as an integral part of the water cycle: how we use our water resources and how our actions help shape the water cycle. In addition, students will be encouraged to think about how climate change will impact water resources.

This seminar examines the multifaceted experiences of Jewish communities in the Maghreb during the colonial period, spanning from the early 19th century through the independence movements of the mid-20th century. We will explore how these communities navigated the social, political, and cultural landscape of colonial rule, focusing on key themes that shaped the Jewish experience in colonial North Africa. These themes include the impact of French colonial policies, evolving legal status, the involvement of French Jews in colonial dynamics, the rise and decline of the Judeo-Arabic press and literature, the emergence of Jewish women's writing, rabbinical responses to colonialism, and Jewish participation in anti-colonial movements. By analyzing a diverse range of primary sources—from rabbinical responsa and colonial legal documents to Judeo-Arabic literature and photographs—we will examine how Maghrebi Jews confronted, subverted, and negotiated the colonial order while reconfiguring their cultural and religious identities.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a deeper understanding of the transformations in Jewish religious, cultural, and social life during the colonial period in North Africa. They will be able to evaluate the varied strategies of adaptation and resistance employed by Jewish communities in response to colonial rule.
