“What is deep listening?
Sama
is a greeting from the secret ones inside the heart, a letter. The branches of your intelligence grow new leaves in the wind of this listening.” As these lines from 13th century Sufi poet Jalal al-Din Rumi suggest, deep listening is an act of profound humanity; it is an act of profound humility. It is also essential for intellectual development. In the 21st century university, how do we teach students in the art of listening – particularly, listening across differences of identity, politics, positionality and power? At a time when events on the national and international stage fracture interpersonal understanding and create environments of ideological isolation, how can justice be approached in our listening practices? How can listening be enacted toward a nuanced understanding of the other, not flattening or homogenizing, but rather, recognizing individuals and communities in their rich particularity, even when that listening may threaten one’s deeply held personal beliefs or community boundaries? This 4000 level mixed undergraduate/graduate course will examine how to conceptualize and enact listening from each of three disciplinary perspectives – narrative medicine, oral history, and social work, all fields in which the act of listening is central to our professional practices.
This class will introduce students to theoretically grounded listening practices incorporating attention to power, privilege, political difference, and personal identity (such as race/ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, religion), and give them opportunities to engage in practical listening labs which will be guided by junior faculty and teaching assistants from our disciplines. Case studies from current sociopolitical events and campus concerns regarding political polarization, freedom of speech, academic freedom and more will be utilized, and change year to year depending on the needs of the campus community. This course will examine interrelated questions informing listening and dialogue across difference such as: 1. How do we make the internal experience of listening visible and legible to others? 2. How do we know we have been listened to? What does the speaker ask of the listener? What are the relationships between witnessing, testimony, and listening? 3. When Alice Walker went "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston " she embarked on a quest for a literary ancestor, an artist, and creator, who, as Toni Morrison writes in "Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation," 1984, is "of the tribe and in it." Who are these "timeless people" we call our ancestors? What stories, traditions, and wisdom have they passed on to help us better understand ourselves and each other? What is our role in preserving their stories? How might they inspire us to tell our own? Using the essays "In Search of Zora Neale Hurston" and "Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation" as starting points, this seminar explores the intricate relationship between writers and scholars and their literary ancestors who are also, at times, mentors and friends. We examine how they have delved into the lives and works of their chosen literary ancestors, using scholarly analysis, personal reflections, memoir, travelogue, and other creative methods to probe, honor, challenge, and expand our view and understanding of their predecessors.
Prerequisites: Medical Informatics G4001, Computer Science W3139. Survey of the methods underlying the field of medical informatics. Explores techniques in mathematics, logic, decision science, computer science, engineering, cognitive science, management science and epidemiology, and demonstrates the application to health care and biomedicine.
Students are introduced to a quantitative, engineering approach to cellular biology and mammalian physiology. Beginning with biological issues related to the cell, the course progresses to considerations of the major physiological systems of the human body (nervous, circulatory, respiratory, renal).
An engineering and economic analysis of past, present and future energy resources. Technological options and their role in the world energy markets. Understanding limits of energy and power density and its impact of resource adoption and feasibility. Comparison of renewable and non-renewable energy resources and analysis of the consequences of various technological choices and constraints. Economic considerations, energy availability, and the environmental consequences of large-scale, widespread use of each particular technology. Critical analysis of carbon dioxide capture and carbon dioxide disposal as a means of sustaining the fossil fuel options in comparison to dramatic increase of electrified resources.
This course moves from Serbia and Bosnia, to Ukraine and the Czech lands, through Poland to Russia and Finland and then on to the southern Siberian steppes and finally the Russian Far East. Along the way, the course is divided into three major thematic and theoretical units.
Epics and Ballads: History, Performance, Identity
Our first focus is on historical songs in the context of Romantic nationalism. We will explore why people (philologists) began to write these down, and how they were they edited and organized into print books. We discuss what these publications meant in the context of Romantic nationalist movements for political autonomy from the Ottoman or Hapsburg Empires. Given the stakes, some scholars were (maybe too) creative with their material. We will ask: What makes an epic text authentic, as opposed to an invented tradition, or even a fake? Throughout, we will pay attention to how traditions of oral performance were learned and transmitted within specific communities of artists, such as Ramadan performers, upper-class Bosnian women, and Ukrainian minstrels.
Words in Context: Poetry, Power, Positioning
Our second unit begins with the theoretical redefinition of folklore in the 20th c. Folklore is no longer defined by
who
performs it (e.g. peasants), but by its characteristics of variation and localization. We begin with a genre that anyone can perform—the proverb. To understand the power of small forms we need place them in their real-world context. We learn about ethnographic interviewing methods aimed at eliciting the local meanings of folklore. We consider relationship between the body and verbal folklore in south Siberian shamanism and in the performance of charms by folk healers in Russia and Finland. In order to bring the study of folklore home, to us at Columbia, we consider campus legends and folklore of the COVID-19 pandemic. This unit provides students with the tools needed to design and carry out their own mini-ethnography, which serves as the final project for the course.
Oral Narrative: Legends, Fairytales, Cross-Cultural Motifs
Our last major unit is dedicated to folk narrative—the memorate (personal narrative), the legend and the fairytale. We begin with Russian memorates about nature and house spirits. Narratives told as true events (memorates, legends) are contrasted with the genre of the fairy tale. We learn about how fairy tales were typically performed

For more than a century, scientists, policy makers, law enforcement, and government agencies
have collected, curated and analyzed data about people in order to make impactful decisions.
This practice has exploded along with the computational power available to these agents. Those
who design and deploy data collection, predictive analytics, and autonomous and intelligent
decision-making systems claim that these technologies will remove problematic biases from
consequential decisions. They aim to put a rational and objective foundation based on numbers
and observations made by non-human sensors in the management of public life and to equip
experts with insights that, they believe, will translate into better outcomes (health, economic,
educational, judicial) for all.
But these dreams and their pursuit through technology are as problematic as they are enticing.
Throughout American history, data has often been used to oppress minoritized communities,
manage populations, and institutionalize, rationalize, and naturalize systems of racial violence.
The impersonality of data, the same quality that makes it useful, can silence voices and
displace entire ways of knowing the world.
A graduate course only for MS&E, IE, and OR students. This is also required for students in the Undergraduate Advanced Track. For students who have not studied linear programming. Some of the main methods used in IEOR applications involving deterministic models: linear programming, the simplex method, nonlinear, integer and dynamic programming.
This course will follow the idea of abolition as expressed first through the eighteenthand
nineteenth-century struggle to end chattel slavery in the Americas, and then as it has come
to define the struggle against over-policing and mass-incarceration in the late twentieth and
early twenty-first centuries.
In the first half of the class, we will consider abolition in England and its colonies, Haiti,
Cuba, and the U.S. In so doing we will examine both primary sources from abolitionist print
culture (narratives by fugitives from slavery, speeches, poems, and polemical tracts), as well as
secondary sources by historians, literary critics, and political theorists. In the second half, we
will likewise read writing by activists (some incarcerated or formerly incarcerated, and some
not) alongside journalism and scholarship from the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of carceral
studies. Across both periods, Black writers will take up the bulk of our attention.

This course is organized around a number of thematic centers or modules. Each is focused on stylistic peculiarities typical of a given functional style of the Ukrainian language. Each is designed to assist the student in acquiring an active command of lexical, grammatical, discourse, and stylistic traits that distinguish one style from the others and actively using them in real-life communicative settings in contemporary Ukraine. This course will examine geological problems from a standpoint of thermodynamic and kinetic theory. Theoretical thermodynamic concepts will be used to derive the crystallization depth and temperature of metamorphic and magmatic minerals, describe the solubility of volatile species in magmas, predict the composition of volcanic gas mixtures, model the nucleation and growth of crystals and bubbles in a melt and determine the chemical interaction between water and rock at the Earth’s surface. Kinetic treatments on the diffusion of heat and matter through crystals and melts will be used to constrain the timing of geological processes. Recommended preparation: Knowledge of mathematics at the level of partial differential equations; mineralogy (EESC 4113); and petrology (EESC 4701); or permission of the instructor.

This short course surveys fundamental Microsoft Excel concepts and functionality applicable to SIPA courses and in professional settings. Topics include interacting with spreadsheets, understanding references and functions, writing formulas, building basic models, controlling formatting and presentation and creating basic charts. The course is targeted at students with limited or no prior Excel experience.
Overview of the field of medicine for informaticians. Medical language and terminology, introduction to pathology and pathophysiology, the process of medical decision making, and an understanding of how information flows in the practice of medicine.

This short course explores techniques that enable sophisticated problem solving and data analysis in Microsoft Excel. Topics include implementing advanced logic using complex formulas and intermediate calculations; managing complexity with Excel's auditing features; importing, parsing and cleaning raw data; pulling data together using lookup functions; and summarizing and analyzing data with conditional aggregate functions and PivotTables. This course does not focus on specific policy or financial applications, but instead explores general concepts and techniques that can be flexibly applied to different solutions in Excel.
This is a course in Spanish conversation. Students will study and practice features of social interaction in Spanish that are crucial to participate in the new culture. This means the course has two learning objectives: One is learning to engage in regular conversations in Spanish; the other is to understand how conversation works. We will cover conversational issues such as gesture, narratives, intonation, opening and closing interactions, turn taking, etc. both in linguistics and social terms. Practice and analysis will be connected: Every week we will consider an aspect of oral interaction in Spanish. We will study those features in naturally occurring conversations among native speakers and we will practice in actual conversations inside and outside the classroom, by means of role play, simulation, film making, debates and interviews. We will use topics of conversation to provide a meaningful environment for the conversation practice.
Introduction to urban data analytics (analysis and visualization of new types of ‘big’ urban data, statistical tools for urban data analysis, machine learning methods, data privacy). Conceptualization of cities as complex adaptive systems (coarse-graining of urban dynamics, network models for infrastructure interdependencies, agent-based urban simulation). Integrated urban infrastructure systems design (basic design solutions for coupled, people-centric, and climate-resilient civil infrastructure systems, Monte Carlo simulations for infrastructure scenario generation).
This one-day seminar, conducted by the reputable training firm Training The Street, explores best practices and efficient techniques for building finance-related spreadsheets.
The lectures will use a real company as a case study and direct participants to blend accounting, corporate finance, and Excel skills to create a dynamic, three-statement financial model. The completed product has five years of projections, three years of historical data, and supporting schedules, including working capital, debt, equity, depreciation, and amortization.

Media Chinese (I & II) : This level-4 course enhances students’ proficiency in reading and discussing current events in Chinese. It features close reading and critical discussions on topics such as politics, economics, culture, and social issues. Through careful analysis of authentic media materials, students will further develop their language skills and deepen their understanding of contemporary China. By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate Chinese media sources confidently and engage meaningfully in conversations about both global and Chinese current events.
This course is designed to help students master formal Chinese for professional or academic purposes. It includes reading materials and discussions on selections from Chinese media covering contemporary topics, Chinese literature, and modern Chinese intellectual history. The course aims to enhance students' strategies for comprehension, as well as their written and oral communication skills in formal modern Chinese.

This course delves into the intersection of epidemiology and computational methods, equipping students with the tools to conduct rigorous epidemiological studies from big clinical data repositories. Students will explore techniques from informatics, computer science, machine learning, and statistics to clean, analyze, and interpret data from electronic health records (EHRs) and other large-scale datasets. Through hands-on projects and case students, students will gain practical experience in applying epidemiologic study designs to uncover patterns, identify risk factors, model disease transmission dynamics, and evaluate interventions. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students to address real-world public health challenges by leveraging the power of data-driven insights. The course is broken up into modules, each of which covers an epidemiologic study design or principle. Modules will range from 1-3 classes, and will include (i) a lecture and (ii) accompanying lab work. Students are expected to read technical texts carefully, participate actively in lecture discussion, and develop hands-on skills in labs involving real-world biomedical and health datasets. Students will curate their own analytic datasets from Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI)-formatted electronic health record (SynPUF) data.
This course, taught in English, offers an in-depth exploration of the Chinese language and its historical development. Key topics include historical phonology and syntax, the Chinese script, and the classification and linguistic features of major dialects. The course also explores the emergence of modern standard Chinese and early poetic traditions. The primary goal is to deepen students’ understanding of the language’s evolution while strengthening their critical thinking skills.
In the 1970s and 1980s a group of young Italian historians transformed the methods of historical inquiry and narrative. This class explores the origins, the diffusion, as well as the debate around Italian Microhistory across Europe and the United States. Also, we will analyze the current application of microhistorical methods to contemporary global history and the genre of biography. Topics include pre-modern popular culture and literacy, minority and marginality, the Inquisition, individual and collective identities, and the relation between the pre-modern Mediterranean, Europe and the world.

Survey of the major topics in basic immunology with an emphasis on the molecular basis for immune recognition and regulation.
Second Term. Explores molecular and cellular mechanisms of nutrient action. Six major foci of modern nutritional science. These include the actions of nutrients in transcriptional regulation, in signaling pathways, on intra- and extracellular trafficking, in assuring normal development, in the maintance of antioxidant defences and nutrient/gene interations.

But the languages of the world are highly diverse, many of them, in contrast to English, with highly complex word and inflectional structures and relatively simple phrasal structures. Theories of grammar built on English serve such languages poorly. This course seeks to address this imbalance by focusing on languages with complex morphological and morphosyntactic structures. Because the grammars of such languages are built around word structures, we will be exploring current lexicalist theories of grammar such as Lexical Functional Grammar and Construction Grammar to develop formal explicit analyses of these languages. One learns morphological and morphosyntactic analysis by doing it across languages of various types, so we will regularly be working through problems to analyze in class.

Formulation of quantum mechanics in terms of state vectors and linear operators, three-dimensional spherically symmetric potentials, the theory of angular momentum and spin, time-independent and time-dependent perturbation theory, scattering theory, and identical particles. Selected phenomena from atomic physics, nuclear physics, and elementary particle physics are described and then interpreted using quantum mechanical models.
This course provides an introduction to semantics, the study of meaning in language. We will explore a range of semantic phenomena, and students will learn the tools and techniques of formal semantic analysis as well as core concepts, goals, and findings of the field.
The course focuses on the emergence of modernism in Ukrainian literature in the late 19th century and early 20th century, a period marked by a vigorous, often biting, polemic between the populist Ukrainian literary establishment and young Ukrainian writers who were inspired by their European counterparts. Students will read prose, poetry, and drama written by Ivan Franko, the writers of the Moloda Muza, Olha Kobylianska, Lesia Ukrainka, and Volodymyr Vynnychenko among others. The course will trace the introduction of feminism, urban motifs and settings, as well as decadence, into Ukrainian literature and will analyze the conflict that ensued among Ukrainian intellectuals as they shaped the identity of the Ukrainian people. The course will be supplemented by audio and visual materials reflecting this period in Ukrainian culture. Entirely in English with a parallel reading list for those who read Ukrainian.
After providing an overview of the history of Prague and the Czech lands from earliest times, the course will focus on works by Prague writers from the years 1895-1938, when the city was a truly multicultural urban center. Special attention will be given to each of the groups that contributed to Prague’s cultural diversity in this period: the Austro-German minority, which held disproportionate social, political and economic influence until 1918; the Czech majority, which made Prague the capital of the democratic First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938); the German- and Czech-speaking Jewish communities, which were almost entirely wiped out between 1938 and 1945; and the Russian and Ukrainian émigré community, which—thanks in large part to support from the Czechoslovak government—maintained a robust, independent cultural presence through the 1920s and early 1930s. Through close reading and analysis of works of poetry, drama, prose fiction, reportage, literary correspondence and essays, the course will trace common themes that preoccupied more than one Prague writer of this period. In compiling and comparing different versions of cultural myth, it will consider the applicability of various possible definitions of the literary genius loci of Prague.
We will explore Anton Chekhov’s work on its own terms, in its cultural context, and in relation to the work of others, especially Anglophone writers who responded, directly or indirectly, to Chekhov and his work. Readings by Chekhov include selected stories (short and long), his four major plays, and
Sakhalin Island,
his study of the Russian penal colony.
There are no prerequisites. Knowledge of Russian is not required; all readings in English.
Students who know Russian are encouraged to read Chekhov’s work in Russian.
The course will be comparative as it addresses Chekhov on his own and in relation to anglophone writers.
The course is open to undergraduates (CC, GS, BC) and graduates in GSAS and other schools. The attention to
how
Chekhov writes may interest students in the School of the Arts.

At all professional levels, job candidates must be able to clearly describe their unique professional qualifications and how they will contribute value to the hiring organization. This 2-session course is designed to facilitate a heightened awareness of career goals and develop the essential ingredients for an effective job search campaign: resume, pitch, online presence, and networking and interviewing skills. Participants will construct a professional resume appropriate to their target industry or organization and submit it for review and feedback. A distinct version of the course for international students covers the nuances of networking and job search in the US and provides CPT and OPT guidelines. Students should enroll in the version that aligns with their background and may attend sessions only in the course section for which they are registered. This course is a required component of the two-course (0.5 point, total) SIPA Professional Development requirement; the other component may be chosen from among a menu of five electives (see

). Students should complete both components of the PD requirement in their first semester.

Understanding the Global Workplace
: In the contemporary workplace, teams are comprised of leaders and contributors from myriad cultural backgrounds. Each person’s way of viewing and being in the world shapes their approach to teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal relations in general. This 1-session course examines how diverse experiences and perspectives are critical to the growth and productivity of teams and organizations. Participants will gain insight into unconscious biases and other impediments to teamwork in the workplace and learn interpersonal skills that foster effective collaboration, conflict management, and productive team outcomes.
Expressive culture in the form of traditional and mediated performing and visual arts, film and literature has reflected and shaped modern Georgian social life in immeasurable ways. This seminar brings anthropological perspectives to bear on how expressive culture has served to articulate national and local senses of identity, grappled with collective trauma, and forged avant-garde creative networks within and beyond Georgia’s borders in the socialist and postsocialist periods. The course is organized in three units: it begins by interrogating the curatorial interventions of international organizations like UNESCO and their role in commodifying Georgian culture for global markets, proceeds by exploring powerful creative responses to colonial and totalitarian experience, and concludes by focusing on the capital city of Tbilisi–its built spaces, ever-changing social configurations, and shifting value systems–as a persistent muse in expressive cultural forms.
There are no prerequisites and the course assumes no prior knowledge of Georgian history, language, or culture.

Effective Public Speaking at Work:
Common workplace interactions such as leading or contributing to meetings and delivering presentations are critical components of professional life. Yet, for many professionals, public speaking is highly stressful. This 1-session course will introduce you to public speaking skills that produce effective results in the workplace, including how to structure, frame, and organize a presentation and deliver it with impact. You’ll learn the key elements of an effective presentation and how to communicate your message convincingly by analyzing your audience and determining its needs. Participants will have an opportunity to practice important verbal and non-verbal delivery techniques – and begin to overcome the fears of speaking up and speaking out.
Prerequisites: MATH GU4041 and MATH GU4042 or the equivalent Algebraic number fields, unique factorization of ideals in the ring of algebraic integers in the field into prime ideals. Dirichlet unit theorem, finiteness of the class number, ramification. If time permits, p-adic numbers and Dedekind zeta function.
Negotiating Everyday Collaborations in the Workplace:
Effective negotiation is a key skill for leaders and contributors worldwide at all professional levels in organizations and workplaces. This 1-session course is designed to promote understanding and build problem-solving skills that can lead to strength and competency in this vital activity of everyday work life. Participants will be able to define negotiation and articulate the key tension that exists in all negotiations; prepare for negotiations using a research-based framework; and articulate their strengths and weaknesses as negotiators, as well as ways they can improve negotiation outcomes.
Networking for Mid-Career Advancement:
Workplace environments have always been bastions of operative professional relationships, explicit and tacit. Historically, research has demonstrated the value and benefits of networking, both in finding jobs during early career and advancing within an organization during later career. In this 1-session course, you will learn what networking can and cannot accomplish; how to network effectively and respectfully; balancing the “getting” and “giving” aspects of networking; and an actionable framework for conducting effective career-advancement networking strategies. Students will learn how to cultivate and sustain professional relationships that can continue to be beneficial over time.
Prerequisites: (MATH GU4041 and MATH GU4042) and MATH UN3007 Plane curves, affine and projective varieties, singularities, normalization, Riemann surfaces, divisors, linear systems, Riemann-Roch theorem.
Using the MBTI to Enhance Communication & Teamwork:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a well-known personality assessment instrument widely administered worldwide in organizational and workplace settings. It does not measure skills or aptitudes but personality preferences – the qualities that combine to make us unique individuals. In this 1-session course, students will learn the benefits of using the MBTI in professional settings and developing self-awareness of preferred decision-making, problem-solving, and relating to others. Interactive exercises will also promote understanding and insight into the preferences of those who share styles dissimilar to ours. Understanding your MBTI profile will enable you to appreciate important personality differences and mesh with the complexities of diverse organizational cultures.
