In our age of purportedly unsurpassable walls, mobility restrictions, and heightened security, borders are often imagined and understood as physical lines of demarcation protecting state sovereignty and defending cultural specificity. This course seeks to destabilize this notion of a fixed, immovable and potentially sealed border through representations of contemporary border-crossing across various media, in order to show the border, instead, as a concept and device regulating human mobility well beyond its physical location. This course will incorporate literary, visual, and political texts that complicate and expand the imaginary -- spatial, temporal, and poetic -- of the border and border crossings.
Divided into four parts that underscore the evolution of human interactions with the border from the early 20th Century until the present, this three-credit undergraduate seminar is focused on Europe while including other migratory spaces of the Global North, most notably North America. We will start with a general overview of the border as a concept and a mechanism that simultaneously enables and restricts movement. We will then engage with post-WWI crossings of the borders of the British and French empire as significant historical elements of the creation of the border in relation to discriminated and racialized groups of the 20th Century. Moving on to exploring the formation of the European Union as predicated on a space of free internal circulation opposing a political objective of “zero illegal entries”, we will look at the formation of EU and the US borders as a result of ongoing processes of illegalization. Lastly, we will study the iterations of some of these processes on the High Seas, only in theory a space of free circulation.
The course will trace the pattern of the evolving theatrical careers of Henrik Ibsen and Harold Pinter, exploring the nature of and relationships among key features of their emerging aesthetics. Thematic and theatrical exploration involve positioning the plays in the context of the trajectories of modernism and postmodernism and examining, in that context, the emblematic use of stage sets and tableaux; the intense scrutiny of families, friendships, and disruptive intruders; the experiments with temporality, multi-linearity, and split staging; the issues raised by performance and the implied playhouse; and the plays' potential as instruments of cultural intervention. Two papers are required, 5-7 pages and 10-12 pages, with weekly brief responses, and a class presentation. Readings include major plays of both writers and key statements on modernism and postmodernism.

Muslims’ roots in the Americas are centuries old despite their presence being considered a recent phenomenon. This legacy emerges from migratory movements from the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia, which were precipitated by multiple and intersecting factors. This course will trace and examine the historical and contemporary waves of Muslim and Arab (forced) migrations into the Americas to explore how empire, globalization, and war have influenced the flow of people across borders and shaped policies and ideas of belonging in receiving nation-states. We will focus on Arab and Muslim identity in light of gendered, ethnoreligious, class, and national affiliations and investigate the racialization of Islam and the gendered-Orientalist constructions of Arabs and Muslims in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean (with particular emphasis on Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and others). Through interdisciplinary texts and a comparative framework, we will trace how specific diasporic Muslim and Arab subjects have been imagined, received, incorporated or altogether rejected into host nation-states.
Contemporary exhibitions studied through a selection of great shows from roughly 1969 to the present that defined a generation. This course will not offer practical training in curating; rather it will concentrate on the historical context of exhibitions, the theoretical basis for their argument, the criteria for the choice in artists and their work, and exhibitions internal/external reception.

This course will examine the noir tradition in American film between 1941 and 1959. We begin with noir's origins in two turn-of-the-century literary works about Empire, Inc and the divided self of the modern era, Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" and Stevenson's " Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". We will consider the international roots of Hollywood noir, many of whose directors were European refugees from Hitler, and its depictions of the femme fatale, l'homme fatale, and the world métropole, particularly NYC and LA. Readings will include Marxist, postcolonial, and gender theory, and film history. Films will include "The Killers", "Double Indemnity", "The Big Heat", "The Lodger", "Gilda", "Sunset Blvd", "Sweet Smell of Success", and "Vertigo".

The Senior Project Seminar will focus primarily on developing students’ ideas for their research projects while charting their research goals. The course is designed to develop and hone the skills necessary to complete a senior thesis paper or creative project. An important component of the seminar is the completion of original and independent student research. The seminar provides students a forum in which to discuss their work with both the instructor and their peers. The professor, who facilitates the colloquium, will also provide students with additional academic support through seminar presentations, one-on-one meetings, and classroom exercises; supplementary to the feedback they receive from their individual faculty advisors. The course is divided into three main parts: 1.) researching and producing a senior project thesis; 2.) the submission of coursework throughout the spring semester that help lead to a successful completed project; 3.) and an oral presentation showcasing one’s research to those in and beyond the CSER community at the end of the academic year. This 1 credit course is an introduction to the challenges of managing crises, especially public health emergencies, in local government. We will focus on the first 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic as it played out in New York City, but we will also review case studies from other disasters and public health emergencies: a Covid antecedent in the SARS crisis in Toronto; the Katrina event revealing both debilitating inequities and lack of preparation in New Orleans; the lockdowns and fears emanating from the Ebola crisis. This course will be instructed by a former government official and feature experts and practitioners from government and advocacy organizations.

British literature of the Romantic period, from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth
century, displays a fascination with what is on the margins. This manifests itself most
memorably in the unprecedented focus on socially marginalized figures – the beggars,
madmen, abandoned women, and solitary wanderers who populate the pages of Romantic
poetry and fiction. The author too is often figured as an outsider in this period, someone
whose authority derives specifically from his or her position of marginality, looking in
from the fringes. Geographically, the peripheries of the island of Great Britain (Wales
and especially Scotland) were major sites of literary experimentation in the Romantic era,
while the south coast of England attracted particular interest because of the constant
threat of invasion from France during these years. And of course Romantic writers
famously exploited textual margins: many of the major literary works of the period make
innovative use of footnotes, glosses, and other paratextual apparatus. This course
considers these various aspects of Romantic marginality and the intersections between
them. In addition to the work of more canonical authors (William Wordsworth, Samuel
Taylor Coleridge, Walter Scott, Mary Shelley), we will be reading poems, novels, essays,
and letters by writers, especially women, whose work has historically been marginalized.
"Advanced Topics in German Literature” is open to seniors and other advanced undergraduate students who have taken Intro to German Literature (GERM 3333) or an equivalent class. The seminar provides students the opportunity to closely examine a topic from a variety of perspectives and theoretical approaches. Readings and discussion in German. Working with her advisor, a student will develop a vocal or instrumental recital program with representative musical works from a variety of historical periods. In order to satisfy the requirement, the student will present an hour long public performance of the recital program. Students may also satisfy this requirement by composing original vocal or instrumental works.

a small group of students may apply to go to the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place after the program ends.
The application process is competitive and will take place onsite in February. On this excursion, students will be able to attend screenings and film meetings. To prepare for this event, a module of the course will be devoted to the festival, its history and how this global event has reflected, over the decades, the mutations and evolution of cinematographic art. Prerequisites: Introductory Biology or equivalent. Topics in Biology: Radiographic Anatomy and Select Pathology (Section 007 Fall semester) , Radiographic Anatomy and Selective Pathology is a survey course intended for undergraduate students. This course is not limited to science majors and would be of value to any student that may have an interest in studying the anatomy of the human body. The course is a systematic approach to the study of the human body utilizing medical imaging. We will be studying neuro-anatomy, anatomy of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. Vascular and musculoskeletal imaging will be addressed as well. Modalities will include CT, MRI, PET/CT, and Ultrasound. Cross sectional imaging will be supplemented with pathology demonstrated on appropriate cross sectional imaging. The class size will be limited to 15 students. The lecture will be offered Wednesday evenings from 6:10-7:00 pm. This will be a 1 credit course offered only during the fall semesters. Topics in Biology: Crossroads in Bioethics (Section 001 Spring semester) , This two credit multidisciplinary and interactive course will focus on contemporary issues in bioethics and medical ethics. Each topic will cover both the underlying science of new biotechnologies and the subsequent bioethical issues that emerge from these technologies. Each topic will introduce a bioethical principle that will be explored using case studies. Students are expected to prepare for each class based on the assignment so that classroom time will be devoted to discussion, case presentations, and role playing rather than merely lectures. Topics include stem cell research, human reproductive cloning, bioterrorism, neuroethics, genetic screening, medical stem cell tourism, patents and science, forensic science and the interface of science and culture/religion.
This year-long, three-credit course is mandatory for students who will be writing their Senior Thesis in Comparative Literature and Society or in Medical Humanities. Students who wish to be considered for Departmental honors are required to submit a Senior Thesis. The thesis is a rigorous research work of approximately 40 pages, and it will include citations and a bibliographical apparatus. It may be written in English or, with the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, in another language relevant to the students scholarly interests. Although modeled after an independent study, in which core elements of the structure, direction, and pace of the work are decided together by the student and their faculty thesis supervisor, students are nonetheless expected to complete certain major steps in the research and writing process according to the timeline outlined by the ICLS DUS.
The senior seminar is a capstone course required for the human rights major. The seminar provides students the opportunity to discuss human rights from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and to explore various theoretical approaches and research methodologies. Students undertake individual research projects while collectively examining human rights through directed readings and discussion.
Majors in Mathematics are offered the opportunity to write an honors senior thesis under the guidance of a faculty member. Interested students should contact a faculty member to determine an appropriate topic, and receive written approval from the faculty advisor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies (faculty sponsorship is limited to full-time instructors on the staff list). Research is conducted primarily during the fall term; the final paper is submitted to the Director of Undergraduate Studies during the subsequent spring term.
MATH UN3994 SENIOR THESIS IN MATHEMATICS I must be taken in the fall term, during which period the student conducts primary research on the agreed topic. An optional continuation course MATH UN3995 SENIOR THESIS IN MATHEMATICS II is available during the spring. The second term of this sequence may not be taken without the first.
