This course begins by studying the late Soviet era—the 1970s through the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991--in order to understand what kind of political system and political culture Russia inherited. We spend some time analyzing why and how the Soviet Union—a superpower for 75 years—disintegrated suddenly and for the most part, peacefully. Then, the bulk of the course focuses on state-building in the Russian Federation. Russia’s effort to construct new political institutions, a functioning economy, and a healthy society represents one of the greatest political dramas of our time. Beginning with Yeltsin’s presidency in 1991 and continuing through the current eras of Putin, Medvedev, and Putin again, we consider phenomena such as economic reform, nationalism, separatism, federalism, war, legal reform, civil society, and democratization. The third part of the course addresses Russia’s foreign relations. Like its predecessor states, the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, Russia is concerned with what kind of state it is (or should be) and where it stands in the international order. We will study how Russian elites make sense of Russia’s identity, as well as Russia’s policies toward the US, Europe, its “near abroad,” the Middle East, and China.
This course first compares the post-independence political histories of South Asian countries, particularly India and Pakistan. It then explores selected topics across countries: social and cultural dimensions of politics; structures of power; and political behavior. The underlying theme is to explain the development and durability of the particular political regimes - democratic or authoritarian - in each country.
All supervisors will be Columbia faculty who hold a PhD. Students are responsible for identifying their own supervisor and it is at the discretion of faculty whether they accept to supervise independent research. Projects must be focused on Hellenic Studies and can be approached from any disciplinary background. Students are expected to develop their own reading list in consultation with their supervisor. In addition to completing assigned readings, the student must also write a Hellenic studies paper of 20 pages. Projects other than a research paper will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Hellenic Studies is an interdisciplinary field that revolves around two main axes: space and time. Its teaching and research are focused on the study of post-classical Greece in various fields: Language, Literature, History, Politics, Anthropology, Art, Archaeology, and in various periods: Late Antique, Medieval, Byzantine, Modern Greek etc. Therefore, the range of topics that are acceptable as a Hellenic Studies seminar paper is broad. It is upon each supervisor to discuss the specific topic with the student. The work submitted for this independent study course must be different from the work a student submits in other courses, including the Hellenic Studies Senior Research Seminar.
For centuries, the transatlantic has been a space of forced labor migrations, mercantilism, colonial and capitalist extraction, imagination, resistance, and resignification. The transpacific, too, has long been a space of imperial imaginaries and conquests, and subaltern protagonisms. In this seminar, we will examine the restructuration of the gradual end of African slavery and the shift to new forms of involuntary labor, or what sociologist Dale Tomich calls, the second slavery. We will examine the relationship between political economy and aesthetics with a focus on Asiatic labor and Asiatic racial form to understand ways that colonial stereotypes about Asian laborers were curated to facilitate the restructuration of the global division of labor. Focusing on the aesthetics of Chinese exclusion in mediating debates about labor, we will examine hemispheric American debates that reconfigured Transatlantic slave relations with eugenics and scientific racism to new forms of transpacific labor. We will question how visual cultures that circulated ideologies about racial capital, miscegenation, and economic liberalization shaped racialized nationalisms and immigrant restriction policies. While we will focus primarily on the Brazilian context, we will also examine the way these discourses took shape in other Latin American countries to interrogate the hemispheric circulation of the ways eugenic ideas about racial mixing shaped deliberations of political life, citizenship, and national belonging.
Surveys key features of the Japanese political system, with focus on political institutions and processes. Themes include party politics, bureaucratic power, the role of the Diet, voting behavior, the role of the state in the economy, and the domestic politics of foreign policy.
The course Korean Politics and Foreign Policy aims to advance knowledge of Korea’s politics and foreign policy, with emphasis on that of South Korea, but with additional focus on North Korea. This course covers relevant political theory, contemporary history and issues of particular significance to Korean politics, including the growth of civil society and the contest for legitimacy internally and internationally. The course addresses the Peninsula’s unique geopolitics, democratic and economic development in South Korea, and the politics and economics of the communist and Confucian North. Given today’s tremendous global concern over North Korea’s security challenges, the course examines in detail the ideological and political background behind the North’s rapidly developing missile and nuclear capabilities and human rights violations. The course posits the aims and objectives of South Korea’s international relations and success in the regional and global arena--which contrast starkly with that of North Korea. It assesses South Korea’s relations with the United States and near neighbors China and Japan. Finally, it weighs prospects for inter-Korean cooperation, integration and unification.

This course aims to teach students what, if any, answers social scientists have to the questions that concern anyone with an interest in African politics: 1) Why have democratic governments flourished in some countries and not others? 2) What institutions may enable Africans to hold their leaders accountable? 3) How do people participate in politics? 4) In what ways do aspiring African political leaders build public support? 5) To what extent does persistent poverty on the continent have political causes? and 6) Why is violence used to resolve some political disputes and not others?

This course will provide an overview of the field of epigenetics, with an emphasis on epigenetic phenomena related to neurodevelopment, behavior and mental disorders. We will explore how epigenetic mechanisms can be mediators of environmental exposures and, as such, contribute to psychopathology throughout the life course. We will also discuss the implications of behavioral epigenetic research for the development of substantially novel pharmacotherapeutic approaches and preventive measures in psychiatry.

In this course we explore the history of epidemics and medical confinement in France and some of its colonies/former colonies, from the 1720 plague in Marseille to recent outbreaks of Ebola and COVID-19. We consider how disease, contagion, quarantine and confinement have been understood and represented, drawing on contemporary and later sources that include medical treatises, news media, personal accounts, fictional works, films and visual depictions such as paintings, illustrations and cartoons. Though we focus on disease and representation in the French and ‘francophone’ context, the course also has a comparative dimension: we turn to other historical contexts and texts associated with them when these connections are illuminating. The course is organized around a series of five case studies centering on different contagious diseases and their historical context. We will see that each of these pandemics raises its own moral, political, social and historiographical questions, though there are also connecting threads that traverse historical periods, including the linkage between epidemics and the othering of certain population groups; the intersection of colonialism, revolution and warfare with disease and the introduction of new medical protocols, and the gradual emergence of biopolitics as a framework for the relationship of individual to state. Discourses about contagious disease have always had a ‘literary’ dimension, making regular use of metaphor and allegory. This course explores the intersections of history and literature, considering not only these recurrent tropes but also how writers and, to a lesser extent, film-makers have explored the experiential, ethical and political aspects of illness and contagion. Without making general claims about the specificity of literature, we approach literary texts as sites that condense and catalyze philosophical and political reflection and debate. The course examines chapters in the history of disease and medicine but it also has a historiographical component as we consider how representations of epidemics have changed over time and to what extent the historical study of illness, medicine and public health helps us to think about the present.

In this course we will take a hands-on approach to developing computer applications for Financial Engineering. Special focus will be placed on high-performance numerical applications that interact with a graphical interface. In the course of developing such applications we will learn how to create DLLs, how to integrate VBA with C/C++ programs, and how to write multithreaded programs. Examples of problems settings that we will consider include: simulation of stock price evolution, tracking, evaluation and optimization of a stock portfolio; optimal trade execution. In the course of developing these applications we will review topics of interest to OR/FE in a holistic fashion.
How does life work on a molecular level? Why do we succumb to disease, and how can we create new cures? This course will explore the biochemistry of life and how this knowledge can be harnessed to create new medicines. You will learn how cells convert environmental resources into energy through metabolism, how cellular molecules function, and how to use this biochemical knowledge for drug discovery related to neurodegeneration, cancer,and the current SARS-CoV-2 COVID19 pandemic. At the conclusion of the course, you will be able to diagram the major metabolic pathways and compare how these pathways are dysregulated in normal tissues in and disease states, and to design your own drug discovery program to create therapeutic for diseases such as COVID-19. In addition, you will know what techniques are used to uncover biochemical knowledge and how to design and interpret relevant experiments. You will be capable of collaborating with other people in the analysis and interpretation of biochemical data, and be able to communicate, defend and refute interpretations of data. You will learn how to create an original research proposal in the form of a research grant application. Having completed one year of college-level biology and one year of organic chemistry will be helpful to maximally benefit from this course. This course satisfies the requirement of most medical schools for introductory biochemistry, and is suitable for advanced undergraduates, and beginning graduate students; this replaces the previous UN3501 course.

The goal of this course is to provide students with the computing tools that are necessary for data and business analytics. Students will be introduced to the basics of the Python programming language with special emphasis on the data analysis and visualization libraries available in the language (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, bokeh). They will learn the basics skills for gathering and processing data for analytical exercises using APIs, SQL, and by deconstructing JSON data objects, and will also gain basic familiarity with data manipulation using the Unix shell.

It covers basics of polymer science, pharmacokinetics, and biomaterials, cell-substrate interactions, drug delivery system fabrication from nanoparticles to microparticles and electrospun fibrous membranes. Applications include cancer therapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Course readings include textbook chapters and journal papers. Homework assignments take the format of an assay responding to an open-ended question. A term paper and a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation are required at the end of the semester.
This seminar addresses several recurring questions about the history of Jews in the core regions of the Islamic World. Although we will explore some foundational concepts and historical realities, we will focus on the period from approximately 1800 to 2000. The seminar starts from two assumptions. First, Islamic civilization was an umbrella civilization under which diverse communities lived and interacted. Second, inter- and intra-communal relations between Jews and Muslims (and Christians) were neither static nor universal, but changed according to conditions of time and place. Students will leave the class with a firm grasp of the social and cultural history of Jews in the Islamic World, and will also be introduced to basic methods of inquiry in history, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. Students will engage with a mix of scholarly research, readings in original documents, film, literature, music, and some material and visual artifacts.
The course will cover major statistical learning methods for data mining under both supervised and unsupervised settings. Topics covered include linear regression and classification, model selection and regularization, tree-based methods, support vector machines, and unsupervised learning. Students will learn about the principles underlying each method, how to determine which methods are most suited to applied settings, concepts behind model fitting and parameter tuning, and how to apply methods in practice and assess their performance. We will emphasize roles of statistical modeling and optimization in data mining.

This course is designed as an introductory exposure to entrepreneurial concepts and practical skills for engineering students who wish to explore entrepreneurship conceptually or as a future endeavor in their careers. The class will be a mix of lecture, guest speakers from the entrepreneurship community, and work-shopping concepts we cover. Grades will be based on class participation and engagement as well as final pitch in which students describe their key takeaways - insights gleaned from the process.

Students in this course will be divided into teams, each of which will work on real-world business analytics, financial engineering, and operations research projects provided by companies like Apple, UBS, and the National Institutes of Health. Each project will be structured with a specific goal and data set. Acceptable results include a solution to the problem, actionable advice for future research, or a presentation of a business case. Project elements include a presentation of a proposal, a solution, a plan for implementation, results of the execution of that plan (including acquiring and wrangling data, analyzing data using machine learning or other techniques, and delivering results suitable for business), and an analysis of results. Startup Fundamentals provides a rigorous framework for “what do you do with an idea”. This course provides a repeatable method of taking an idea, building a product and working on the key aspects of what makes a great, scalable startup business. We will cover customer discovery, market sizing, pricing, business model choices, the role of the CEO/founder and many, many more topics. By the end of the course students will have a clear view of their product and market, and the fit between both. Though we welcome all business ideas, this course is geared to turning those business ideas into high growth startups. A high growth startup has some key characteristics that require a unique approach to thinking about ideas and products. The course reading list includes key books that describe aspects of great businesses and lessons learned from notable startup companies. We use cases, weekly assignments, team presentations and in class exercises to develop the interlocking pieces of a startup.

Cell Signaling is a graduate course for Ph.D. students open to advanced undergraduate and masters students. The basic molecular mechanism of signal transduction pathways will be discussed related to cell growth and stress systems. There will be an emphasis on specific categories of signaling components. Students will read the literature and give presentations. Topics include the pathways by which cells respond to extracellular signals such as growth factors and the mechanisms by which extracellular signals are translated into alterations in the cell cycle, morphology, differentiation state, and motility of the responding cells. For stress pathways we will discuss how cells respond to survive the stress or induce their own death. In many cases these pathways will be related to human diseases.

Survey of the origin and extent of mineral resources, fossil fuels, and industrial materials, that are non renewable, finite resources, and the environmental consequences of their extraction and use, using the textbook Earth Resources and the Environment, by James Craig, David Vaughan and Brian Skinner. This course will provide an overview, but will include focus on topics of current societal relevance, including estimated reserves and extraction costs for fossil fuels, geological storage of CO2, sources and disposal methods for nuclear energy fuels, sources and future for luxury goods such as gold and diamonds, and special, rare materials used in consumer electronics (e.g. ;Coltan; mostly from Congo) and in newly emerging technologies such as superconducting magnets and rechargeable batteries (e.g. heavy rare earth elements, mostly from China). General review of product development process; market analysis and product system design; principles of design for manufacturing; strategy for material selection and manufacturing process choice; component design for machining; casting; molding; sheet metal working and inspection; general assembly processes; product design for manual assembly; design for robotic and automatic assembly; case studies of product design and improvement.
Prerequisites: Introductory course on manufacturing processes, and heat transfer, knowledge of engineering materials, or the Instructor's permission. Principles of nontraditional manufacturing, nontraditional transport and media. Emphasis on laser assisted materials processing, laser material interactions with applications to laser material removal, forming, and surface modification. Introduction to electrochemical machining, electrical discharge machining and abrasive water jet machining.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic computer programming (e.g. Java, Matlab, Python), or instructor's permission. A hands-on studio class exposing students to practical aspects of the design, fabrication, and programming of physical robotic systems. Students will experience the entire robot creation process, covering conceptual design, detailed design, simulation and modeling, digital manufacturing, electronics and sensor design, and software programming.

, this course aims to raise political and social awareness and engagement with the challenges facing New York City and strengthen ties between Columbia University, disadvantaged communities, and city government agencies and community organizations. Through sharing ideas about how to make structural and systemic change in ways that integrate science, law, politics, history, narrative and community engagement, the course is intended to support students in working to break down racial and ethnic barriers and toward a more fair and just society.
Prerequisites: the instructors permission; some basic knowledge of social psychology is desirable. A comprehensive examination of how culture and diversity shape psychological processes. The class will explore psychological and political underpinnings of culture and diversity, emphasizing social psychological approaches. Topics include culture and self, cuture and social cognition, group and identity formation, science of diversity, stereotyping, prejudice, and gender. Applications to real-world phenomena discussed.
(Lecture). This lecture course is intended as the first half of the basic survey in African-American literature. By conducting close readings of selected song lyrics, slave narratives, fiction, poetry, and autobiography, we will focus on major writers in the context of cultural history. In so doing, we will explore the development of the African- American literary tradition. Writers include, but are not limited to, Wheatley, Equiano, Douglass, Jacobs, Harper, Dunbar, Chestnutt, Washington, Du Bois, and Larsen. Course requirements: class attendance, an in-class midterm exam, a five-page paper, and a final exam.
In this course, you will be introduced to pricing models for various financial instruments, including, but not limited to, futures, forwards, bonds, options, credit default swaps, and mortgage backed securities. We will be examine how these models work under both normal market conditions and extreme market conditions. We will discuss the history of various financial products, and how financial markets are likely to evolve over time.
