The course will explore the often-contested terrain of urban contexts, looking at cities fron architectural, sociological, historical, and political positions. What do rights have to do with the city? Can the ancient idea of a right to the city tell us something fundamental about both rights and cities? Our notion of citizenship is based in the understanding of a city as a community, and yet today why do millions of people live in cities without citizenship? The course will be organized thematically in order to discuss such issues as the consequences of cities developments in relation to their peripheries beginning with the normative idea of urban boundaries deriving from fortifying walls, debates around the public sphere, nomadic architecture and urbanism, informal settlements such as slums and shantytowns, surveillance and control in urban centers, refugees and the places they live, catastrophes natural and man-made and reconstruction, and sovereign areas within cities the United Nations, War Crimes Tribunals. At the heart of our inquiry will be an investigation of the ways in which rights within urban contexts are either granted or withheld.
An advanced film theory "workshop" in which we shall avoid reading film theory in favor of a selection of other texts, taken mainly from the domains of art history, philosophy, and literature. Our central question will be: What can we, who have grown up in the age of cinema and digital media, learn from discourses about vision and its relation to narrative that pre-date the cinema, or that consider the cinema only marginally? In this course, we shall begin to approach some of the major topics of contemporary film theory -- narrativity, subject-construction, the relation of words to images -- through the lens of texts that have remained largely outside the network of citations and references we normally associate with the work of professional media theory. We might begin the groundwork for an "opening up" or critique of some of the blind spots of current theory; at the very least, we shall be reading works that challenge our usual ways of theorizing.
This course focuses on the interaction of courts – domestic and international and the two-level politics that entails how domestic and international institutions deal with human rights law. Throughout the world, courts and official actors have been negotiating, resisting and backlashing not only human rights law but also each other’s decisions and this material reveals some of this resistance. Courts have been acting as “Gatekeepers” either facilitating or jeopardizing the implementation of human rights law and policies. The seminar will focus on the dialogue between domestic courts and the following human rights systems: European Court of Human Rights, Inter-American Court of Human Rights and African Court of Human Rights. In some regions of the world, where states have not accepted the jurisdiction of an international court, other examples on the interactions between state-level-courts and federal courts are offered. The first part of this seminar will expose some theoretical grounds on how courts – either domestic or international, or both – act as gatekeepers. This initial part utilizes theories of International Relations, Sociology and Socio-legal studies to explain these two-level interaction games between courts. The second part will examine a set of different human rights issues in which domestic courts act as gatekeepers resisting or renegotiating human rights decisions from international courts. The list of rights analyzed in this section is not comprehensive, but will provide a broader understanding of some of the key issues concerning the two-level politics of human rights. The selected themes focus indifferent regions of the world, and include the debate of core human rights issues, such as civil and political rights; economic and social rights; self-determination and indigenous rights, right to equality and non-discrimination; among others.

Fundamentals of human brain imaging is a new advanced course open to undergraduates students from the Psychology, Neuroscience, Engineering, and Statistics Departments, that traces the key steps of the recent “neuroimaging revolution”, and introduces the various methodologies and associated analytic approaches that are now available in the field of cognitive neuroscience. Specifically, the course develops around three main questions, currently under-represented in our undergraduate curriculum:
1) What is the advantage to study human cognition using correlational methodologies (e.g., EEG, MEG, fMRI)? 2) Which is the particular contribution of each method in the understanding of brain/behavior relationship? 3) Which are the most common ways to approach the analyze the neuroimaging data?
By promoting an inclusive environment and implementing active learning strategies, this course stimulates critical thinking and fosters collaboration among students from different departments.

’s allegory is everywhere engaged with the challenges, dangers, and delights of reading itself. As part of our assessment of Spenser’s poetry, we will confront his role as secretary to Lord Arthur Grey during England’s brutal colonization of Ireland. Taking Spenser’s poetic and political careers together, this course will uncover the deeply contradictory aims of writing in the early modern humanist tradition, which questioned traditional class hierarchies and imagined new ways of fashioning the self at the same time that it helped to sanction England’s burgeoning imperial ambitions.
This course is about Anatolia before the Ottomans. The topic has piqued the interest of generations of scholars, trending towards two questions: How did Anatolia become Turkish? and How did Anatolia become Muslim? In other words, when can we start to recognize the modern concept of Turkey? So far, the twenty-first century has witnessed a shift in questions. Scholars have recently been working to demonstrate that change did not happen in a straightforward way from Greek Christians to Turkish Muslims, but that the many communities in Anatolia all borrowed, fought, married, and traded with each other. This semester, we will read both premodern sources and modern scholarship to integrate Armenian Christians and Kurdish Muslims into the story of Turkish rule in premodern Anatolia.

On the one hand, we have emerged from a century that has seen some of the most brutal practices ever perpetrated by states against their populations in the form of genocide, systematic torture, mass murder and ethnic cleansing. Many of these abuses occurred after the Holocaust, even though the mantra never again was viewed by many as a pledge never to allow a repeat of these practices. Events in the new century suggest that these trends will not end anytime soon. At the same time, since the middle of the twentieth century, for the first time in human history there has been a growing global consensus that all individuals are entitled to at least some level of protection from abuse by their governments. This concept of human rights has been institutionalized through international law, diplomacy, international discourse, transnational activism, and the foreign policies of many states. Over the past two decades, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and international tribunals have gone further than any institutions in human history to try to stem state abuses. This seminar will try to make sense of these contradictions.
The rapid democratization of technology has led to a new wave of immersive storytelling that spills off screens into the real world and back again. These works defy traditional constraints as they shift away from a one-to-many to a many-to-many paradigm, transforming those formerly known as the audience from passive viewers into storytellers in their own right. New opportunities and limitations offered by emergent technologies are augmenting the grammar of storytelling, as creators wrestle with an ever-shifting digital landscape. New Media Art pulls back the curtain on transmedial works of fiction, non-fiction, and emergent forms that defy definition. Throughout the semester well explore projects that utilize Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and the Internet of Things, alongside a heavy-hitting selection of new media thinkers, theorists, and critics. The course will be co-taught as a dialogue between artistic practice and new media theory. Lance Weiler, a new media artist and founder of Columbia’s Digital Storytelling Lab, selected the media artworks; Rob King, a film and media historian, selected the scholarly readings. It is in the interaction between these two perspectives that the course will explore the parameters of emerging frontiers in media art and the challenges these pose for existing critical vocabularies.
This class is designed for the intermediate student to gain a more advanced level knowledge of Spanish vocabulary, verb conjugation, and medical terminology for use in a clinical setting. In addition to short lectures to facilitate grammar and usage patterns, class time will be used for intensive speaking practice to improve pronunciation, enhance comprehension, and build confidence in using Spanish through the use of hypothetical scenarios, student presentations, and small group discussions to improve Spanish language and Spanish language proficiency.
This class is designed for the high intermediate student to gain advanced level knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and medical terminology in a clinical setting. In addition to short lectures to implement student knowledge, class time will be used for intensive immersion in Spanish to prepare for future clinical practice. Students will gain experience in speaking medical Spanish though role-plays in health-related settings and how to explain the most common diseases, procedures and treatment to a patient in Spanish. This course will focus on proficiency in comprehension and speaking Spanish. The course instructor will supervise the Spanish language experience.
The term 'gendercide' highlights a range of distinct and specific forms of violence executed against human beings based on their own gender self-identification as well as patriarchal assumptions about their gender. In this course, we will examine research discerning, movements challenging, and the adjudication, and/or lack thereof, of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in several major categories traversing spatial, temporal, and ideological contexts, including: reproductive rights and health; trafficking and migration; and disaster and pandemics. It is critical to: interrogate the ideologies that drive and sustain GBV; examine in detail the harm it presents to human beings; explore what can be done to protect the security of those experiencing GBV; and to think about measures of prevention to guard additional human beings from experiencing it. The heart of the course will involve an intersectional analysis of specific case studies; highlighting the GBV associated with each case; examining the impact of GBV on human rights; and how GBV has been addressed in society. The close study of each case will assist students in illuminating intricacies, complexities, and challenges to human security in specific contexts.
Prison literature—poems, plays, memoirs, novels, and songs written in prison or about prison—constitute a significant part of American literature. Prisons expose many of the systemic inequalities of American life, above all those based on racism and the enduring legacies of slavery. Using the tools of critical race theory, feminism, and class analysis, this course will explore the forms of cultural expression that have emerged in relationship to the American prison experience. Though the course will touch on the rise of convict leasing, chain gangs, and work farms as part of the penal system under Jim Crow, the main focus will be on developments in the U.S. prison system and in prison literature since the 1960s, roughly from the prison writing of George Jackson, Angela Davis, and Malcolm X to the outpouring of contemporary fiction and poetry about prison life by Jesmyn Ward, Colin Whitehead, Rachel Kushner, and Reginald Betts. This is the era of what Michelle Alexander has called “the new Jim Crow,” the rise of mass incarceration, the partial privatization of the penal system, and the growth of supermax facilities. Among the questions we will explore together are these: What tools and techniques do writers use to construct the prison experience? What are the affordances offered by various genres (drama, autobiography, poetry, the novel) for exploring the prison system and the systems of oppression that converge at that site? Does some literature of incarceration perpetuate damaging discourses about “felons,” or does it revise and complicate stereotypes and narratives about incarcerated individuals? How do narratives involving change, conversion, growing up, or being defeated operate in various genres of prison literature? What role do mourning, witnessing, testifying, and resistance play in such writing? What is the imagined audience of various genres of prison writing, that is, for whom is it written? What ethical and political demands does such writing make on us as readers, citizens, activists?

All supervisors will be Columbia faculty who hold a PhD or other terminal degree. Students are responsible for identifying their own supervisor and it is at the discretion of faculty whether they offer to supervise individual research. Projects must be focused on human rights and can be approached from any disciplinary background. Students are expected to develop their own syllabus and reading list in consultation with their supervisor. The syllabus is to be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies or the Director of Undergraduate Studies, respectively. In addition to completing assigned readings, the student must also write a human rights seminar paper of 20-25 pages. Projects other than a research paper will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The range of topics that are acceptable as a human rights paper is broad. Research projects could focus on a particular violation of human rights; they could study the work of a particular NGO or social movement, they could research a person or a particular event and its implications for human rights. They could discuss the development of a norm, trace a particular process or comment on a case, among many other possible topics. According to the University’s academic policies, students cannot submit the same work for more than one course. The work completed in this independent study course must be distinct from the work a student completes in other courses, including the Human Rights Senior Seminar, the Human Rights Thesis Seminar, and the graduate human rights thesis course. Please also note that HRSMA students may not count this course toward the 30 points required for the degree. Rather, it can only be completed as additional coursework.
This course approaches Jewish Studies from theoretical and pedagogical standpoints. In addition to looking back at ancient, medieval and Early Modern approaches to the study of Jewish topics and examining the theoretical, historical and religious underpinnings of Jewish Studies as a modern discipline, we will also read theoretical writings from related disciplines. The course will balance these materials with pedagogical materials and exercises. Faculty from disciplines related to Jewish Studies will visit the seminar to offer perspectives on current approaches to the field, and the class will visit the Rare Book and Manuscript Library with Jewish Studies Librarian Michelle Chesner. This course is required for students in the Jewish Studies MA program. It is open to graduate students, and advanced undergraduates may register with permission from the instructor. Modern Yiddish culture and literature developed and flourished in the so-called Yiddishland, a land without borders located in Eastern Europe across Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Rumania, etc. But the heart of Yiddishland was in prewar Poland: in Warsaw, Vilnius (now Lithuania), Krakow, and Lublin. The course will center on four cities in which Yiddish culture and literature blossomed before the Holocaust, and examine key figures of modern Yiddish literature associated with these places, such as Isaac Bashevis Singer, Kadya Molodowsky, Mordechai Gebirtig, Abraham Sutzkever, Yankev Glatshtayn, and others. Employing gender and comparative approach as analytical lenses, we address the following questions: What role does space play in culture production? How does our familiarity with space impact our perception of literature and culture? The texts and class discussion will be in English. The course will have a digital humanities component: we will engage in Mapping Yiddish Europe through Locus Tempus.
