This course is required for students in Pediatric Primary Care and the Pediatric Specialty Care programs. The pathogenesis of common conditions affecting children is presented and serves as a basis for clinical management. Relevant pharmacology is presented for each of the disease entities.
The person who tells the story can shape the narrative and wield power. Politicians have traditionally practiced narrative-building — by telling stories that draw people in, sharing examples from lived experiences, and using emotive language — as a way to control or manage their image, message, and the events that created their personal history. They use story and narrative to create public policy and to establish political agendas around healthcare, housing, crime, education, and more. And it's not just politicians who depend on storytelling. Activist organizations, such as the Movement 4 Black Lives, the me too. Movement, and the American Civil Liberties Union increased visibility for their messages by participating in interviews, publishing op-eds, and proposing legislative policy to galvanize the public in support of social justice. Their efforts led to a reexamination of the concept of systemic racism and the need for expanded gender equality and justice, inside and outside of academic circles, to create more realistic understandings of the U.S.’s imbalanced economic, educational, and healthcare systems. Within pop culture and the discussion around gun control, the debate over mental health has forced some to consider the topic for the first time.
Storytelling is a communicative, educational, and entertaining device that is required in most fields, such as policy making, NGO and non-profit work, broadcast and print journalism, theater and film, books and podcasts, litigations, and court cases, and much more. This course will explore various social movements and the different modes of storytelling that have created successful narrative change to give students the skills needed to excel in any industry.
This course aims to help students understand and define social impact and its role in today's policy and social justice landscape by unpacking various types of social impact programs and evaluating them through the lens of their effectiveness relative to other approaches to solving complex problems. The class will look at impact through from multiple perspectives including business, government, and nonprofits.
Students will both learn how to assess social impact and evaluate their effectiveness in comparison to other types of interventions. As well, they will develop and design a social impact program framework for both a business and a nonprofit.
This seven-week elective is taught online. It is open to 2nd year Screen/TV Writers and Directors, will serve as an incubator for story ideas not currently being developed in any full-semester core classes.

Was the pro-life narrative strategy a decisive factor in overturning Roe v. Wade? After countless videos of police brutality, why did the video of George Floyd’s murder dramatically accelerate the pace of cultural and policy change? After years of campaigns to reduce teen pregnancy, how was it that a TV show became one of the main drivers of reducing teen pregnancy to the lowest point in recorded history? After losing 31 state referendums, why did a new narrative approach enable the gay marriage campaign to start winning nationwide? These questions and storytelling examples are part of broader social impact campaigns which combined the right mix of strategy and narrative to create change. A social impact campaign is one that creates a significant change that addresses a pressing social issue. Often, there is too little focus on the power of narrative to change behavior and drive action.
This class will explore all aspects of social impact campaigns that harness the power of “effective” stories to engage audiences and prompt action. Additionally, we will investigate how corporations and brands develop campaigns and how they partner with the government, foundations and NGOs. Students will have the chance to question some of the leading creators/practitioners as they create their own social impact campaigns.
Impact investing is young but fast-growing industry. An increasing number of philanthropists, traditional investors, and asset managers look to impact investment as a compelling asset class. Entrepreneurs tackling social and environmental issues are finding in impact investors a more reliable and better-aligned source of capital to finance their ventures. The industry requires a committed, talented, and well-prepared pool of capital to continue evolving and growing. This class aims to provide the students with some of the essential skills and tools they will require to work and thrive in the impact investing industry. This is an experiential course designed to introduce students to impact investing and provide them with the skills used by impact investors every day. Students will work on the key "products" required in an impact investment transaction, including: assessing a possible impact investment; writing an investment memo with a full impact analysis, and presenting an investment proposal to a group of seasoned impact investors. The course provides an overview of the scenario analysis and climate risk modeling process for corporate issuers and government entities. There is a brief introduction to the climate models utilized by the IPCC, both global and regional. There is a description of the scenario generation and analysis process, with linkages to benchmark scenarios outlined by international bodies. This is followed by a review of the linkages between climate models and socio-economic variables in the form of integrated assessment models, Ricardian models and economic input-output analysis. There is one module on the information systems needed to ensure good adaptation and a review of best practices and guidelines for climate risk management strategies. Integrated examples of climate risk and opportunities for specific issuers are discussed in the last 2 classes. The problem sets and exercises are designed to provide practice in applying high-level guidelines and climate damage relationships to the strategies and operations of specific countries, industries and companies.
Social Value Investing provides a new methodology to more effectively address some of society’s most difficult and intractable challenges. Although many of our world’s problems may seem too great and too complex to solve—inequality, climate change, affordable housing, food insecurity—solutions to these challenges do exist, and will be found through new partnerships bringing together leaders from the public, private, and philanthropic sectors. This course presents a five-point management framework for developing and measuring the success of such partnerships. Inspired by value investing—one of history’s most successful investment paradigms—the framework provides tools to maximize collaborative efficiency and positive social impact, so that major public programs can deliver innovative, inclusive, and long-lasting solutions. The course also provides students with practical insights on the ways that public, private, and nonprofit managers and policy advisors are trying to build successful cross-sector collaborations. This course is founded on a mix of management theory, tools for effective public management, and exposure to real-world situations that have challenged conventional management styles. In addition to readings from the textbook, students will prepare for weekly lectures and discussion through reading relevant articles, case studies in PDF format, and links to short video content provided on Canvas. Lectures will combine presentations, case method teaching, discussion, content provided on Canvas, group exercises, and guest speakers. You should come to each lecture prepared to engage in a lively dialogue with prepared questions.

Methods for concentrating and manipulating light at length scales below the diffraction limit. Plasmonics and metamaterials, as well as excitons, phonos, and polaritons and their advantages for mechanical and chemical sensing, and controlling displacement at nanometer length scales. Applications to nanophotonic devices and recently published progress in nanomechanics and related fields.
This course looks to legal definitions of “low-income” and “disadvantaged community” codified in federal and state statutes to frame discussions on energy insecurity and resiliency risks. Using these guiding points, a cross-disciplinary approach is followed to explore how the construction of energy efficient and resilient buildings contribute to their affordability in operations and maintenance. The course primarily focuses on creating sustainable and affordable multifamily housing, a building type unique to urban areas located in the US Northeast. However, in view of recommended strategies to meet carbon reduction goals, such as building electrification, the parameters of the course are expanded to highlight best practices in equitable policy-making around the design of utility rates and rules for low-income electric customers.
This short course is designed to enable participating students to weigh and apply humanitarian principles, concepts, best practices, and minimum standards to a simulated humanitarian emergency. The simulation exercise challenges student participants with issues and dilemmas confronting humanitarian practitioners face when responding to a complex emergency, and inspires them to work within the humanitarian system and architecture to solve problems in creative ways. In their roles as staff of humanitarian response agencies charged with responding to a large-scale crisis, student participants will analyze a dynamic stream of assessment data, prioritize key humanitarian needs, and make critical decisions about the appropriate type and scale of needed interventions. Participants will also be introduced to the importance and mechanisms of international humanitarian coordination in assembling the response. The simulation will include a day-long exercise followed by a day of debriefing, analysis, and identification of key challenges and lessons. The Humanitarian Crisis Simulation focuses on humanitarian operations from the perspective of humanitarian assistance agencies operating in the field. The course should likely, therefore, be of interest to those wishing to work with humanitarian agencies responsible for planning and conducting responses to vulnerable populations affected by disaster, or to those who want to better understand the humanitarian assistance system and the challenges confronting humanitarian decision-makers.
From Prince Valdimir’s Rus’ to the Post-Soviet Russia of Vladimir Putin, religion has remained a key factor in the making and remaking of Russian polity and culture. This course will explore how Orthodox Christianity—whether privileged or persecuted—came to dominate the Russian religious scene and shape Russian institutions, discourses, and lived experiences. Students will draw from a variety of primary and secondary sources—chronicles, saints’ lives, travel narratives, memoirs, letters, legal documents, icons and other ritual objects, films and fictional texts, as well as a large body of scholarly works and contemporary media materials—to examine how Russia’s Orthodox past and its rewriting into competing “histories” have been used over time as “legacies” shaping the present and the future.
This course will examine the full spectrum of strategies and skills for executing a successful campaign. We will focus on the role of traditional media, digital mobilization, and strategic communications intersect to raise awareness and move policy on human rights issues. By the end of the course, you will have built your own advocacy campaign, from developing the change theory to constructing a media plan to envisioning creative concepts to engage the public. We will also exercise the skills of advocacy letter and op-ed writing to influence change.
This class examines how to reconcile the differing/conflicting interests/goals of energy, and mining, companies and the public interest (e.g. governments); how to negotiate PPP agreements; understand the function/impact of laws and international trade agreements; and determine how CSR, especially environment and anti-corruption, and human rights apply. Case studies of multi-billion international energy pipeline projects, including TAP in Albania and Greece, TAPI in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, BTC in Georgian and the Caucasus and , for comparative purposes, the controversial Keystone in US and Canada, will be the prism/focus for analysis. The class is dynamic and cross-disciplinary.
The fundamental purpose of this course is to facilitate an understanding of the physiological mechanisms relevant to the maternal experience, fetal life, and the neonatal period. This course will focus primarily on the physiology of normal maternal/fetal/newborn issues and cover some common complications and pathology.
In this class, we will build up the actor’s physical and mental muscles via exercises, games, and assignments that rediscover uncensored child-like wonder. We will attempt to relax our brains, open up our hearts and move our bodies with great pleasure together, which will cultivate an intrinsic appetite for an open, vulnerable, generous, ferocious, playful, rigorous, surprising and impulsive presence. This state of flow, hopefully, will be able to find its rightful place in any role and in any medium you pursue.
Most of this semester will be spent on exercises in pursuit of your unique individual clowns as we necessarily soften and shed physical and emotional holds by inviting a sense of play and imagination. These exercises will gradually allow your latent clown-within (i.e. your talent / humanity) to show up in the room. Towards the end of this introductory class, we will encounter the smallest mask on earth – the Red Nose! – which not only doesn't mask, but instead draws attention to and magnifies YOU.
We will invite your generous openness, ferocious abandon, insistent honesty and gleeful mischief to make a larger footprint in your work, so the top layer of the iceberg that is your socially-conditioned selves can slowly melt away. You will sweat. You will make songs. You will listen deeper and harder. You will be engaged and relaxed at the same time. You will release some glorious ha-ha’s and emotional wa-wa’s into the ether. This all will be silly. You will make something disastrous and messy. You will confront fears and conjure bravery. Are trans people new? Is sex binary? Can sex change? These questions and their precedents have monopolized gendered politics and have taken on global significance in recent years. Amidst the tidal wave of transphobia and the scapegoating of trans people within the US election and across transnational borders, answers to these questions are pressing and of great consequence—not only for trans people themselves, but the stability of the systems of gender and sex which organize bodies and persons along a cis/trans and male/female divide.
But the importance of sex and gender to everyday and political life has a much longer history. While we have eclipsed the “transgender tipping point” from 2014 and are now dizzy at the center of a transgender hysteria hurricane, anxieties and control over what sex and gender are—and who can change them—have many pasts. These pasts have constituted key paradigms of world history, including empire, the state, citizenship, selfhood, mind/body dualism, social reproduction, divisions of labor, religious order, secular and scientific thought, human difference, and even time.
In short, sex and gender (almost) always matter. But they have mattered and manifested in different ways, been differently articulated, embodied, and regulated, and ebbing and flowing as concepts of social concern and contingency across contexts.
Following Foucault’s formulation of a history of the present—a genealogy of how we got here—this course is a history of the trans present in that it charts the ways in which sex and gender have been ontologized across borders and contexts, often in ways which regulate and police bodies within borders. It historicises the divisive discourses that animate present day politics, showing that sexual dimorphism’s legitimacy has been continually contested in different ways and from different standpoints for centuries, and that arguing for or against the universality of sex/gender is a move that people across left/right and liberal/illiberal political lines have historically made. The path towards trans’ contemporary inception is not only uneven, including many discontinuities as well as continuities. It is also global and disturbing, requiring the violence of empire, eugenics, and slavery to cleave sexual dimorphism into two, whose “binary logic” trans then seeks to muddy and muddle—in ways which sometimes yield to ideas of what sex and gender “really are”. Archaeology is a sprawling, messy discipline and the role that theory does, should, and might play in the process of archaeological data collection, analysis, and interpretation has been highly contested. Archaeologists argue over whether there is such a thing as a stand-alone ‘archaeological theory’ and what kinds of theory from other disciplines should (or should not!) be imported. This course explores a range of recent theoretical conversations, orientations, and interventions within archaeology, with an eye to understanding what is currently at stake – and what is contested – in how archaeologists think about making archaeological knowledge in the contemporary moment. In doing so, this course encourages students to think about theory in archaeology as an important form of “practical knowledge” or “know how” for archaeologists (cf. Lucas 2018).
This course focuses on economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa from a political economy perspective. It is divided into three sections. The first section examines the broad economic trends, policies and strategies of the past 50 years. The Washington Consensus and the lost decades are examined in some detail. The focus of this part is on economic growth and structural change, notably the controversies around economic policies and institutions. In the second section the course turns to socioeconomic dimensions and aspects of development including poverty, inequality, employment, health, education, and gender. The final section concludes with an examination of the implications of climate change, debates around foreign aid and an overview of what we have learned. Some readings are to be finalized.

This course will provide an introduction to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the drug development and approval process, often referred to as the “Critical Path”. The class will begin with a review of the history and organization of the FDA, and analysis of the principle steps along the critical path, including preclinical testing, clinical testing (drug development phase 0 thru IV), Good Laboratory Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Clinical Practices, and adverse event reporting. Different types of FDA submissions (IND, NDA, ANDA, SPA, eCTD), and FDA meetings will be examined, along with accelerated drug approval strategies, orphan drug development strategies, generic drug development, and post-marketing Sponsor commitments. Throughout the class we will study the related legislation and regulations that empower FDA, and the interrelated FDA guidance documents that define FDA expectations.
This class will describe the electronic and physical structure of inorganic materials with an emphasis on colloidal quantum dots and surface science.
The scenes selected for study and practice will come from dramatic works by playwrights of the 20th and 21st centuries. For the most part these writers will be American dramatists, but exceptions may sometimes be made. The scenes being used are assigned by the instructor, sometimes by way of suggestions by the student, if the student has a particular interest in a specific writer or character. Three scenes are presented each class. Each scene will be able to work with the teacher for approximately 50 minutes. The emphasis of the working session is on process, methods of rehearsal, engagement of body and voice, employment of principles of craft, and self-analysis.

The Sustainable Development Goals have garnered remarkable momentum across the globe, providing a framework for thinking and acting on the world’s most urgent challenges. Since they were agreed upon there has been growing recognition that more, and better, innovation will be needed if they are to be achieved. Development organizations and governments across the globe are increasingly investing in different forms of innovation to advance development outcomes. Innovation has also played a crucial role in addressing the direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines highlights the importance of innovation research and practice. Also innovation efforts led by people in low-income countries and middle-income countries have been of vital importance to local and national responses to COVID-19. In this course students will learn how to frame and advance innovation within international organizations and governments in support of development goals. Innovation in the development cooperation context can be conceptualized and operationalized in two pillars: 1. To help advance organizational reforms, change the institution and contribute to continued relevance. 2. To help advance development outcomes and more inclusive processes in low and middle-income countries through innovation. The course will discuss both aspects and outline their linkages. The course is designed to help students gain a critical conceptual understanding of the practice of innovation in development and humanitarian contexts, obtain skills in change management tactics to help organizations further embrace innovation, and learn the practical application of selected innovation approaches and methods. Students will be exposed to a variety of frameworks, along with case studies and practical exercises. Students will gain an understanding of advancing innovation in development cooperation and humanitarian affairs in practice. The syllabus will also cover central questions related to the ethics of innovation and to inclusive innovation, especially with regard to equitable outcomes. Students will explore the relationship between innovation practices and management practices that emerged over the last decade to infuse more flexible and adaptive practices. In the production of immersive experiences, technology is used in creative ways to promote interactivity with an audience. Imagine creating performances where effects are magically triggered by participants, bespoke props can be controlled through theatrical cueing systems and online experiences are connected to the physical world. The Internet of Things (IoT) can be much more than smart toaster ovens - connected devices open up the possibility for unique storytelling opportunities beyond the screen.
This course provides a hands-on introduction to programming and the development of physical computing devices. We will explore various sensors, outputs, communication protocols and methods for connecting internet services together to create interactive prototypes for your immersive concepts.

This course addresses the practical challenges entailed in the process of creating a successful exhibition. Developing an actual curatorial project, students will get an opportunity to apply the museum anthropology theory they are exposed to throughout the program. They will be given a hands-on approach to the different stages involved in the curation of a show, from the in-depth researching of a topic to the writing, editing and design of an exhibition that will be effective for specific audiences.

The purpose of this course is to enable you to become an informed user of financial information. To be properly informed you need to understand financial statements, the note disclosures and the language of accounting and financial reporting. We will focus on the three major financial statements – the balance sheet, the income statement and the statement of cash flows - that companies prepare for use by management and external parties. We will examine the underlying concepts that go into the preparation of these financial statements as well as specific accounting rules that apply when preparing financial statements. As we gain an understanding of the financial information, we will look at approaches to analyze the financial strength and operations of an entity. We will use actual financial statements to understand how financial information is presented.
Whoever controls the future of the internet, controls the future of the world. We'll look at the technical roots of the internet, and the people and entities -- telecom companies and their regulators, technologists and idealists, security forces and hackers -- shaping it today. Each group faces challenges. Policymakers have reached consensus that human rights apply online, but need to update and replace laws, regulations, and norms for the digital age. Companies have responsibilities to law and policy, but vary widely in their respect for users and governments. The UN Sustainable Development Goals identify internet access as essential to development, but policy environments fail to extend connectivity to vulnerable or marginalized communities. And the cat-and-mouse game between cyber offense and defense continues, leaving many less-resourced groups -- and the right to privacy -- lagging behind. Will national sovereignty reassert itself, breaking the internet, or will the vision of a borderless cyberspace prevail? Will the European approach to data protection set global standards? Does network neutrality function amidst the internet of everything? To find the answers, we nimbly role-play, enjoy small group activities, welcome guest experts, and hone tech policy skills under time pressure. This course is designed to prepare social workers for clinical work with bereaved families. We emphasize the idea that grief therapy focuses importantly on active listening linked to interventions that provide validation, support or guidance. We provide a way of understanding grief using an attachment theory model that explains a big-picture framework for understanding grief and adaptation to loss. The centerpiece of the course is a presentation of an approach to grief therapy derived from our efficacy-tested treatment for complicated grief and incorporating attention to self-care, racism, ethical obligations and dilemmas and using peer or experienced supervision in doing grief therapy.
