The data master’s project is an ambitious, serious, sustained, data-driven work of journalism. You will design, undertake and complete the project independently or in pairs, working with individual advisors. To meet these requirements, your project needs to include a data component that shows mastery of obtaining, analyzing and presenting data to a broad audience. The final product should include text, visualization or any multimedia elements mounted in a standalone website, and must include a separated detailed description of the methodology followed during the research process (nerd box) as well as the code documentation.

In this seven-week class, open to Writing for Film and Television and Screenwriting & Directing concentrates we will do the deep work of creating at least two unforgettable and irreplaceable characters for a future screen or teleplay. In weekly group meetings, students will be assigned a slot to discuss first a main character and then in response to that character, their main antagonist/foil, working through specific exercises until their two characters are sufficiently rich and nuanced that the writer is now able to build a story around them.
Conflict analysis is central to understanding the context and content of any conflict. It is also critical for the person doing the conflict analysis to have a good understanding of who they are as a conflict resolution practitioner, including the frames with which they view the conflict analysis. Our worldviews, assumptions, values, and beliefs shape how we frame and create meaning from conflicts that we choose to examine, and how we understand the dynamics of those conflicts. Therefore, to conduct an impartial analysis of any conflict, and add value for the stakeholders involved, self-awareness is crucial.
This course is the foundation for developing the necessary mindset for conflict analysis. We want you to be able to enter any situation and ask the question, “What is really going on here?” and to use that inquiry to uncover underlying needs, issues, and assumptions. In this course, in addition to increasing your self-awareness as a conflict resolution practitioner, you will explore and become familiar with diverse conflict analysis approaches and tools, beginning with creating a conflict map to identify the actors, dynamics, and structures that are creating, escalating, and perpetuating the conflict. You will work with a variety of conflict analysis tools to examine the stakeholder perspectives and will be asked to identify issues that surfaced as a result of this analysis. You will define goals for your inquiry that correspond to the conflict issues you have identified and coalesce thematically around a specific purpose of appropriate scope for your capstone study. You will utilize the Coordinated Management of Meaning and Case Study frameworks to engage in desk-based qualitative inquiry using secondary sources. You will put theory into practice by interpreting the secondary data through the lens of applicable theory. The data will be further analyzed using CMM models and conflict analysis tools as a means of surfacing several needs to be addressed in your intervention design (in the next capstone course).
This course is the first of three (3) required courses of the capstone sequence.
In 6050, students will complete conflict analysis for their capstone case study.
In 6250, students will design an intervention that addresses the needs identified in their earlier analysis. In 6350, students will consider sustainability, as well as monitoring and evaluation strategies for their proposed intervention.

The Proseminar in Religion is designed to support PhD students within the department as they work on various aspects of professional development. Meeting three times per semester, the sessions will focus on both academic and non-academic career paths, coordinated by a member of the faculty and with guest speakers from both within and beyond the department. The emphasis will be on concrete outputs and skills training. The proseminar will require preparation and active participation from enrolled students, including background reading and writing assignments connected to the monthly topic. After each session focused on a piece of writing (fellowship applications; CVs and cover letters; publishing), students should come away from the proseminar with strong drafts of the relevant texts.
The proseminar is required for all ABD students in year 5 or 6 and can be taken sequentially or not. ABD students are encouraged to speak about the timing of enrollment with the DGS and their dissertation sponsor.
Prerequisites: 2ND YEAR PHD STATUS IN GOOD STANDING Corequisites: ANTH G6205 Within this seminar, one will master the art of research design and proposal writing, with special emphasis on the skills involved in writing a dissertation prospectus and research proposals that target a range of external funding sources. Foci include: bibliography development; how one crafts and defends a research problem; the parameters of human subjects research - certification; and the key components of grant proposal design. This graduate seminar will expose students to major themes and issues in the study of South Asia. The course will provide a serious intellectual foundation for students wishing to pursue specialized, directed research in the region.
Broadly speaking, themes for consideration include: cultural history and early modernity; capitalism and political economy; genealogies of political thought; anticolonialism; caste and religion; and gender and feminist history.

The electricity sector worldwide is changing more rapidly today than at any period since the inception of the industry. Billions of dollars of new investment will be required over the next decade to maintain and improve electricity service, particularly in emerging economies. Models of service delivery are changing, and the role of the traditional regulated utility continues to evolve. This class is designed to provide a full exposure to current issues across the electricity value chain, including both regulated and competitive sectors. In addition, it is intended to provide insights that are applicable to other industries, including infrastructure financing, maintaining competition in markets, structuring good governance arrangements, and promoting economic efficiency.
Course Summary: the quantum many-body problem and its the conceptual formulation in terms of functional integrals, the basics of perturbative calculations at both zero and non-zero temperature, mean field theory and its interpretation as a saddle point of a functional integral, fluctuations including collective modes, the field theory of linear response and transport calculations and the new features associated with nonequilibrium physics.

These readings will help establish a common discourse with which to discuss how art and artists subvert society and also allow us to reflect on how artists prepare and sustain themselves to actualize the messages they seek to convey.
This is a graduate-level course on data generation and analysis in neuroscience and neurology for wet-lab scientists, using a combined lecture and workshop format with exercises in R. The first half of the course covers basic statistics, machine learning, and neurogenomics, and the second half examines machine learning on non-genomics modalities.
Recent progress in control of atoms with lasers has led to creating the coldest matter in the universe, constructing ultra precise time and frequency standards, and capability to test high energy theories with tabletop experiments. This course will cover the essentials of atomic physics including the resonance phenomenon, atoms in magnetic and electric fields, and light-matter interactions. These naturally lead to line shapes and laser spectroscopy, as well as to a variety of topics relevant to modern research such as cooling and trapping of atoms. It is recommended for anyone interested in pursuing research in the vibrant field of atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics, and is open to interested students with a one year background in quantum mechanics. Both graduate students and advanced undergraduates are welcome.

This course is an introduction to the economics of energy markets. We will study the main sources of inefficiencies in energy markets – market power and externalities – and their implications for policy making. We will cover, for example, how oil and natural gas prices are determined globally, deregulation and market power in electricity markets, and policy responses such as carbon permits trading. We will also discuss recent challenges faced by policymakers in energy markets, such as the incorporation of renewables, transmission, transport, and the energy transition to net zero more broadly.
Prerequisites: Familiarity with Corporate Finance The global energy industry is comprised of the largest and most interrelated set of businesses in the world. From its inception, the industry has grown dramatically to provide ever increasing amounts of energy and power to commercial, industrial and retail consumers around the world. Given its unique industry structure, specialized financing techniques have been developed to expand and/or complement conventional public and private financing alternatives. These specialized financing approaches have, in turn, allowed the energy industry to access an unprecedented range of capital sources to finance its increasingly complex and challenging business model.
It took the mass murder of six Asian women in Atlanta on March 16, 2021 to draw national attention to what Asian Americans have been warning about since the wake of Covid-19: a surge in anti-Asian violence and hate. Since the onset of the coronavirus, 1 in 8 Asian American adults experienced a hate incident, and 1 in 7 Asian American women worry all the time about being victimized, reflecting an under-recognized legacy of anti-Asian violence, bigotry, misogyny, and discrimination in the United States that dates back more than 150 years. Drawing on research and readings from the social sciences, this course links the past to the present in order to understand this legacy, and how it continues to affect Asian Americans today.
The different studios in the Mailman Core teach a set of foundational perspectives, knowledge, and skills. But the practice of public health requires applying this education in a context characterized by uncertainty, risk, competing interests, and conflicting values. In the fall semester, Integration of Science and Practice (ISP) involved contained cases where the stories and evidence were organized and arranged for us. Often the decision-points were relatively unambiguous. This spring we will expand our reach, taking on cases in a way that looks more like the real world. We will start with a complex case specifically selected to integrate key concepts from the Core Semester. You will write a policy memo by focusing in on an issue within the case that you find compelling. The policy memo will serve as a model for you to then construct your own cases in small groups and take responsibility for teaching an ISP session devoted to your case. This team-based approach to problem-solving will also allow you to bring the concepts you explore in Leadership and Development to bear in ISP. These student-led cases, drawing on a range of skills and tools, represent the culmination of the Core.

The goal of the course is to provide students with an overview of some of the fundamental principles and practice of leadership as it applies to a career in public health, with a specific concentration on personal leadership development. Students will focus on four critical competencies of personal leadership: 1) self-awareness, 2) power, 3) leading through others, and 4) negotiating effectively (Figure below). Students will also critically examine traditional notions of leadership, exploring concepts of ‘who gets to lead?’, the inequities that result and the diversity of effective leadership roles and styles. With this understanding, students will develop and improve their ability 1) to lead individuals and teams in a wide range of settings, including research centers and domestic as well as international public health organizations, 2) to perform more effectively as both team members and individual contributors to organizations and communities; 3) to promote their own leadership plan and credo.
Given its weight, it is important to stress that developing a leadership credo means more than coming up with a snappy one liner or finding just the right quote to capture your leadership style. It is an opportunity to develop an authentic leadership stance – a set of beliefs and/or values that you stand for as a leader and that you expect from others who you will lead, whether as the head of an organization or a member of a team, to support and eventually allow them to follow you. Your role is to move individuals towards success in meeting specific goals and overcoming certain challenges. Developing your credo will enable you to verbalize how you will achieve this through an authentic presentation of yourself. This course aims at ensuring you are comfortable, capable and confident in the authenticity of You as a leader.
The course will provide an overview of the science, policy, politics, and economics of food systems as a critical element of public health. The course will have a primary focus on the food system in the United States, but will include a global perspective. Students will learn and apply the fundamentals of public health scientific research methods and theoretical approaches to assessing the food landscape though a public health lens. In addition, the course will cover how diet – at first glance a matter of individual choice – is determined by an interconnected system of socio-economic-environmental influences, and is influenced by a multitude of stakeholders engaged in policymaking processes.
This course aims at familiarizing students with historical and contemporary debates on Latin American economic development and its social effects. The focus of the course is comparative in perspective. Most of the readings deal, therefore, with Latin America as a region, not with individual countries.
The first five classes are historical. After an initial overview of long-term historical trends and debates on institutional development in Latin America, it looks at the four distinctive periods of economic development: the “lost decades” after Independence, the export age from the late nineteenth century to 1929, the era of State-led industrialization, and the recent period of market reforms. The latter should be viewed as an introduction to the second part of the course, which deals with the major contemporary issues: macroeconomic management, trade policies, production sector trends and policies, income distribution and social policy. It will end with a session on the effects of recent crises on Latin America (Covid-19 and 2022-23 world crisis), and the ongoing debate on it future economic and social development.
This course will examine the intersections of race, equity, and the environment – focusing on the growing role and impact of the environmental justice movement. Environmental Justice embeds various disciplines into its analytical framework ranging from political science to urban ecology, economics, sociology, environmental science, community organizing, and more. Drawing from these disciplines, as well as from recent climate laws, policies, advocacy, and regulations, students will develop a deep understanding of climate, equity, and environmental justice in New York City. Building on the concept of integrated climate resiliency, this course will introduce students to the policies, stakeholders, research, and advocacy involved in the development and implementation of environmental laws, energy policies, nature-based solutions, and sustainable infrastructure. Throughout the course, we will review the impact and implications of particular policies, as well assess case studies of particular communities. The course will also invite guest speakers currently working in the field to share their views and expertise.
Prerequisites: PHYS G6092. This course will study the classical field theories used in electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and elastic solid dynamics. General field theoretic concepts will be discussed, including the action, symmetries, conservation laws, and dissipation. In addition, classical field equations will be analyzed from the viewpoint of macroscopic averaging and small-parameter expansions of the fundamental microscopic dynamics. The course will also investigate the production and propagation of linear and nonlinear waves; with topics including linearized small-amplitude waves, ordinary and extraordinary waves, waves in a plasma, surface waves, nonlinear optics, wave-wave mixing, solitons, shock waves, and turbulence.

of financial regulation. Regulation in the financial sector covers both
sets of rules (regulations),
usually grounded in law and enforceable by law, and
supervision
, oversight exercised through examinations and surveillance, with legal powers to ensure remediation of significant problems. We will discuss the underlying rationale for
financial
regulation, the most important elements involving market failure and externalities associated with financial activity. These elements can arise arise from the network nature of financial activity, asymmetries of information; financial fragilities; and market power. The design of a regulatory system should also take account of the constructive role of market forces, such as incentives for sound financial firm governance and the market’s discipline of risk-taking.

This course introduces beginning graduate students to the changing conceptions in the comparative study of literatures and societies, paying special attention to the range of interdisciplinary methods in comparative scholarship. Students are expected to have preliminary familiarity with the discipline in which they wish to do their doctoral work. Our objective is to broaden the theoretical foundation of comparative studies to negotiate a conversation between literary studies and social sciences. Weekly readings are devoted to intellectual inquiries that demonstrate strategies of research, analysis, and argumentation from a multiplicity of disciplines and fields, such as anthropology, history, literary criticism, architecture, political theory, philosophy, art history, and media studies. Whenever possible, we will invite faculty from the above disciplines and fields to visit our class and share their perspectives on assigned readings. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities and explore fields and disciplines outside their primary focus of study and specific discipline.
