Elementary discrete time methods for pricing financial instruments, such as options. Notions of arbitrage, risk-neutral valuation, hedging, term-structure of interest rates.

Bacteria are not just unicellular germs. This lab course will broaden your awareness of the amazing world of microbiology and the diverse capabilities of microbes. The focus will be on bacterial multicellularity, pigment production, and intercellular signaling. Pigment-producing bacteria will be isolated from the wild (i.e. Morningside Campus or your skin), and characterized using standard genetic tools (PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, transformation, screen) and microbiology techniques (isolation of bacteria and growth of bacterial colonies, media preparation, enrichment techniques for pigments). These techniques will also be applied in the study of bacterial multicellularity and signaling in the standard lab strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa. SCE and TC students may register for this course, but they must first obtain the written permission of the instructor, by filling out a paper Registration Adjustment Form (Add/Drop form). In depth study of the life and works of Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880). Exploration of ‘literary realism’ and the novelist's representation of money, marriage, ambition, class, sex, stupidity, and sainthood. While you will be expected to read all of Flaubert’s major works, we will concentrate in class on Madame Bovary (1857),L’Education sentimentale (1869), Trois Contes (1877), Bouvard et Pécuchet (1881), and the Correspondance. Applications of biological principles to the conservation of biodiverstiy. Because conservation biology is a cross-disciplinary field, some of the social, philosophical, and economic dimensions of biological conservation are also addressed.
The goal of this course will be to subject the source materials about Jesus and the very beginnings of Christianity (before about 150 CE) to a strictly historical-critical examination and analysis, to try to understand the historical underpinnings of what we can claim to know about Jesus, and how Christianity arose as a new religion from Jesus' life and teachings. In addition, since the search or quest for the "historical Jesus" has been the subject of numerous studies and books in recent times, we shall examine a selection of prominent "historical Jesus" works and theories to see how they stand up to critical scrutiny from a historical perspective.

An introduction to the conventions, traditions, values, assumptions, and arguments that have shaped the institution of journalism and its central role in public life. Through close readings/viewings of current and classic works of journalism as well as secondary sources, we explore some of the Big Questions: What is journalism for? What is its role in public life, and how has that changed over time? Is objectivity dead--or should it be? How have new technologies affected our expectations? Is sensationalism bad for you? What is the future of journalism? The focus is on the American experience from the colonial era to the present day, though we will also draw comparisons with international developments.
An inquiry into the nature and implications of justice, including examinations of selected cases and issues such as Roe v. Wade, the O.J. Simpson case, the Pinochet case, affirmative action, recent tobacco litigation, and the international distribution of income and wealth.
Many of the greatest challenges in public health are global. This course uses a multidisciplinary approach to discuss the major underlying determinants of poor health and the relationship between health and political, social and economic development. Drawing upon the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, students will be introduced to the evolution of modern approaches to the setting of global health priorities, the functions and roles of health systems, an overview of current global health practices, and the major institutional players in global health. The first unit of the class will focus on establishing the foundations for a public health approach to understanding the challenges of global health. This will involve exploration of the factors shaping the global distribution of disease and their connection with issues of social, economic, and political development, as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals. The second unit will explore in further detail a number of major health priorities. A significant goal of the class will be to identify common sources of vulnerability and challenge across health risks, and the consequent need for a systemic approach to their being addressed. The third and final unit builds upon this analysis to demonstrate the multi-disciplinary, multi-level approach required to effectively address global health priorities, and the political and organizational cooperation required to achieve this. The class concludes with an analysis of the major challenges and threats to global coordination regarding such threats as pandemic influenza and emerging health threats related to climate change. “The New Black: Contemporary Discourses of Blackness and Racialization” will examine the discourse/discursiveness of post-raciality and or “new” blackness as expressed in recent literary, cultural, and art historical criticism. As such we will consider whether or not we have, in the contemporary moment, reached a post-racial place in which the debates about positive and negative images, “right” and “wrong” representations are no longer useful or necessary. Questions/topics under consideration are: black “authenticity,’ the (hyper)visibility and invisibility of blackness, racial appropriation, class matters/race matters, and the Obama-effect. Texts might include Toure's Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness, Baratunde Thurston's How to Be Black, Kevin Young's Grey Album, Darby English’s How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness, Rebecca Walker's Black Cool, and Evie Shockley’s The New Black as well as other novels, films, and essays. Advanced Modeling and Animation focuses on the use of 3D modeling, animation and simulation technologies for 3D design, 3D analysis, design presentations and manufacturing. Students will learn modeling, animation and simulation for mechanical models, structural models, kinematics models, design visualization, and other applications of 3D software technologies. This course will introduce students to advanced 3D modeling and visualization tools such as SolidWorks, Maya, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro. During the course of the semester, students will be guided through the different uses and applications of these software packages in the context of Engineering Design, Industrial Design, Process Visualization, Assembly Visualization and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Practical workshop in dramatic writing for the screen. Through exercises and games specifically catered to the writing of scenes and concrete scene work, students explore and develop an understanding for the basic principles of screenwriting, learn how to find the right form and structure for each story, and how to achieve thematic richness, emotional depth, and narrative rhythm. By the end of the class students will have written a 10-12 page short and/or have material for the development of a feature screenplay.

Developments in Transport I are extended to handle turbulence. Topics include: Turbulent energy cascade, wall-bounded turbulent shear flow, time-averaging of the equations of change, Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis for the Reynolds stress, the Reynolds analogy, continuum modeling of turbulent flows and heat transfer processes, friction factor, and Nusselt number correlations for turbulent conditions. Then macroscopic (system-level) mass, momentum, and energy balances for one-component systems are developed and applied to complex flows and heat exchange processes. The final part focuses on mass transport in mixtures of simple fluids: Molecular-level origins of diffusion phenomena, Fick's law and its multicomponent generalizations, continuum-level framework for mixtures and its application to diffusion dominated processes, diffusion with chemical reaction, and forced/free convection mass transport.

This course will introduce you to principles of effective public speaking and debate, and provide practical opportunities to use these principles in structured speaking situations. You will craft and deliver speeches, engage in debates and panel discussions, analyze historical and contemporary speakers, and reflect on your own speeches and those of your classmates. You will explore and practice different rhetorical strategies with an emphasis on information, persuasion and argumentation. For each speaking assignment, you will go through the speech-making process, from audience analysis, purpose and organization, to considerations of style and delivery. The key criteria in this course are content, organization, and adaptation to the audience and purpose. While this is primarily a performance course, you will be expected to participate extensively as a listener and critic, as well as a speaker.

A further study of poetic practice for committed student-writers with experience in writing and reading poems. In the classroom, student poems and ideas about poetics are shared, questioned, and critiqued. There will also be readings in and critical interpretation of traditional and contemporary poetry.

Independent projects in imaginative writing in prose, including the genres of fiction, nonfiction, memoir, novellas, inter-related stories, and others. Class meetings consist of a few initial lectures on narrative followed by workshops focused on student writing in progress.
Prerequisites: CIEN E3125 and CIEN E3126.
Capstone design project in civil engineering. This project integrates structural, geotechnical and environmental/water resources design problems with construction management tasks and sustainability, legal and other social issues. Project is completed in teams, and communication skills are stressed. Outside lecturers will address important current issues in engineering practice. Every student in the course will be exposed with equal emphasis to issues related to geotechnical engineering, water resources / environmental engineering, structural engineering, and construction engineering and management.

Topics in Western music from the Classical era to the present day, focusing on the development of musical style and thought, and on analysis of selected works.
Prerequisites: Enrollment limited to 14 students.
We will consider the image and role of the cowboy in fiction, social history, film, music, and art. Readings will include Cormac McCarthy's "The Border Trilogy."
This studio course will provide the students with a foundation in the ceramic process, its history, and its relevance to contemporary art making. The course is structured in two parts. The first centers on the fundamental and technical aspects of the material. Students will learn construction techniques, glazing and finishing methods, and particulars about firing procedures. This part of the course will move quickly in order to expose the students to a variety of ceramic processes. Weekly assignments, demonstrations, and lectures will be given. The second centers on the issue of how to integrate ceramics into the students' current practice. Asking the question of why we use ceramics as a material and, further, why we choose the materials we do to make art. Rigorous group and individual critiques focusing on the above questions will be held. The goal of this course is to supply the students with the knowledge and skill necessary to work in ceramics and enough proficiency and understanding of the material to enable them to successfully incorporate it into their practice.
