The purpose of this course is: (1) to familiarize participants with seven current issues in energy policy, (2) to better understand the interplay of policy and political factors that guide public sector decision-making, and (3) to improve skills for drafting memoranda to senior policymakers. The class will focus on U.S. energy policy, but explore policies in other countries as well. Sub-national, national and international issues will be examined. The seven topics studied will be: 1. Climate change legislation in the U.S. Congress; 2. Chinese coal policies; 3. Critical minerals and the clean energy transition; 4. California solar policies; 5. Energy and climate change implications of crypto currencies; 6. Vehicle-grid integration; and 7. Food and climate change.

This course aims at familiarizing students with historical and contemporary debates on Latin American economic development and its social effects. The focus of the course is comparative in perspective. Most of the readings deal, therefore, with Latin America as a region, not with individual countries. The first five classes are historical. After an initial overview of long-term historical trends and debates on institutional development in Latin America, it looks at the four distinctive periods of economic development: the “lost decades” after Independence, the export age from the late nineteenth century to 1929, the era of State-led industrialization, and the recent period of market reforms. The latter should be viewed as an introduction to the second part, which deals with the major contemporary issues: macroeconomic management, trade policies, production sector trends and policies, income distribution and social policy. The course will end with a session on the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on Latin America and the ongoing debate on it future economic and social development.
This course will examine the intersections of race, equity, and the environment – focusing on the growing role and impact of the environmental justice movement. Environmental Justice embeds various disciplines into its analytical framework ranging from political science to urban ecology, economics, sociology, environmental science, community organizing, and more. Drawing from these disciplines, as well as from recent climate laws, policies, advocacy, and regulations, students will develop a deep understanding of climate, equity, and environmental justice in New York City. Building on the concept of integrated climate resiliency, this course will introduce students to the policies, stakeholders, research, and advocacy involved in the development and implementation of environmental laws, energy policies, nature-based solutions, and sustainable infrastructure. Throughout the course, we will review the impact and implications of particular policies, as well assess case studies of particular communities. The course will also invite guest speakers currently working in the field to share their views and expertise.
Individualized, guided learning experiences at the graduate level in a selected area of concentration. The area of concentration selected should reflect both the role of the clinical specialist/nurse practitioner and the student's specific interests. Proposed work must be outlined prior to registration and agreed upon by both faculty and student.

This course introduces beginning graduate students to the changing conceptions in the comparative study of literatures and societies, paying special attention to the range of interdisciplinary methods in comparative scholarship. Students are expected to have preliminary familiarity with the discipline in which they wish to do their doctoral work. Our objective is to broaden the theoretical foundation of comparative studies to negotiate a conversation between literary studies and social sciences. Weekly readings are devoted to intellectual inquiries that demonstrate strategies of research, analysis, and argumentation from a multiplicity of disciplines and fields, such as anthropology, history, literary criticism, architecture, political theory, philosophy, art history, and media studies. Whenever possible, we will invite faculty from the above disciplines and fields to visit our class and share their perspectives on assigned readings. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities and explore fields and disciplines outside their primary focus of study and specific discipline.
Theory and practice of transmission electron microscopy (TEM): principles of electron scattering, diffraction, and microscopy; analytical techniques used to determine local chemistry; introduction to sample preparation; laboratory and in-class remote access demonstrations, several hours of hands-on laboratory operation of the microscope; the use of simulation and analysis software; guest lectures on cryomicroscopy for life sciences and high resolution transmission electron microscopy for physical sciences; and, time permitting, a visit to the electron microscopy facility in the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).
The MA Research Seminar supports the research projects of MA students in Philosophy.
Participants practice key methods in philosophy and deepen their knowledge of classic and
contemporary contributions to the field. The seminar is suitable for everyone who is aiming to
write a research paper. Seminar participants receive detailed input throughout the semester.
Students can take the class at any stage during their studies for the MA. The class is graded Pass/
Fail.

We will use: 1) individualized writing projects; 2) oral presentations; and 3) concise books on good writing to develop skills for communicating scientific ideas, design, results and theory.
Building upon M.A. Seminar I’s global approach to core issues and conversations with CGT Faculty, M.A. Seminar II tackles new topics and supports the completion of student research and writing. Multi-week modules will continue building discussions around key questions, engaging with guest speakers, and applying new perspectives to hard problems. Research workshops will address common challenges in turning research into writing, engaging sources and citation, and communicating your findings beyond the scope of this class.
One can easily call current times an age of memory and postmemory. The past, its relics and losses, its complicated ways of changing the present are evolving into a new cult – something that strongly defines our perception of reality. The receding border between the fiction and non-fiction writing, between the novel and autofiction, between writing and contemporary art once more turns literature into a realm of ongoing challenge. The documentary history of mankind (and the small-scale, intimate memories of its ordinary representatives) was never so important and influential. Non-fiction writing, from W.G. Sebald to Svetlana Alexievich, is becoming the main influence, echoed in dozens of other books, good and bad, but always facing the past as a main destination – making way into the lost world of previous generations. Could we apply the global trend to the field of contemporary Russian-language literature? How does post-memorial sensibility work in the frame of post-Soviet space with its troubled history and a sequence of traumas, visible and suppressed? The obsession with the past, the growing interest in personal accounts, the multiplicity of voices and stories – how does all that manifest itself in current literary context, from prose to non-fiction and poetry?

The class covers basic economics thinking and policy applications derived primarily from labor economics, industrial organization and international economics. It will examine the effects of government policies on firms, labor, and capital markets. It will also focus on issues of corporate and national governance and performance. There will be several guest lectures on these and other topics.
This seminar is PART 2 for second and third year students who are writing their MPhil thesis. It will assume the form of a yearlong seminar during which students design, research, and write up their MPhil projects. These projects can be based on any kind of sociological method, quantitative or qualitative. The thesis will assume the form of an article that can be submitted to a social science journal. The seminar will help you to find an interesting question, a way to answer it, and a mode of communicating this to fellow sociologists in a way that they might find worth paying attention to. The summer break between the two semesters will allow students who don’t come to the first semester with ready-to-analyze data to gather such data (through ethnographic work, archival research, scraping the internet, combining existing survey data, etc.).
The second of three laboratory courses. This course focuses on the specialty skills in the management of the patient during the pre-operative, intra-operative and the post-operative period. Synthesis of lecture content obtained in Principles & Practice II course. Laboratory experiences provide psychomotor skills and critical thinking inherent to the practice of nurse anesthesia will be developed, demonstrated and assessed. As a component of the course specific skills must be safely demonstrated.

Twenty-first century literary studies has seen a steadily growing interest in formalist literary theory. This trend has manifested in new movements, such as New Formalism, Historical Poetics, and Quantitative Formalism. This interest in formalism has been accompanied by a widely expressed desire for a better understanding of literary form, and to find ways to connect its study with cultural and political history. The archive of Russian Formalism, a protean movement which was active in the 1910s and 1920s, is a rich source for those interested in rethinking the concept of form today. Beginning in the 1960s and ‘70s, Russian Formalism was interpreted as the precursor to French Structuralism and Post-Structuralism. In this class we seek to recontextualize Russian Formalism—not in terms of the ideas of the Cold War period—but rather in light of the cultural and political milieu of revolutionary and Civil War era Russia. By connecting theories of form with the cultural and political contexts from which they emerged, our goal is to develop an understanding of form as a concept defined not only in aesthetic or linguistic terms, but also as a construct with sociopolitical import.

Course description: This seminar is intended for masters students in Religion who are writing and completing a thesis or other paper of similar length and scope. Enrolled students will work with the instructor, their advisor or second faculty reader, and seminar participants to develop, research, and write a thesis. Preparation and prerequisites: Instructor’s permission is required to enroll. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss the feasibility of potential thesis topics with a faculty member in Religion (preferably their advisor or other suitable faculty member), and if relevant also strive to identify key primary texts or sources, in advance of the semester. Course structure: The seminar will meet weekly. The first part of the term will focus on thesis development including scholarly scope, “fit” between theory and methodological approach, and the organization of a literature review and bibliography. The second part of the term will focus on workshopping drafts and sections in development, and ultimately full drafts.
