This course is intended to introduce students to the advanced study of literature. Students will read works from different genres (poetry, drama, and prose fiction), drawn from the medieval period to the present day, learning the different interpretative techniques required by each. The course also introduces students to a variety of critical schools and approaches, with the aim both of familiarizing them with these methodologies in the work of other critics and of encouraging them to make use of different methods in their own critical writing. This course (together with the companion seminar ENGL UN3011) is a requirement for the English Major and Concentration. It should be taken as early as possible in a students career. Fulfillment of this requirement will be a factor in admission to seminars and to some lectures.

The history of Slavic peoples - Russians, Czechs, Poles, Serbs, Croats, Ukrainians, Bulgarians - is rife with transformations, some voluntary, some imposed. Against the background of a schematic external history, this course examines how Slavic peoples have responded to and have represented these transformations in various modes: historical writing, hagiography, polemics, drama and fiction, folk poetry, music, visual art, and film. This is an advanced course intended for majors providing an in depth survey of the cellular and molecular aspects of nerve cell function. Please note that this is not a class on “biblical archaeology”. It is a course about the politics of archaeology in the context of Israel/Palestine, and the wider southwest Asia region. This course provides a critical overview of prehistoric archaeology in southwest Asia (or the Levant - the geographical area from Lebanon in the north to the Sinai in the south, and from the middle Euphrates in Syria to southern Jordan). It has been designed to appeal to anthropologists, historians, and students interested in the Ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Studies. The course is divided into two parts. First, a social and political history of archaeology, emphasizing how the nature of current theoretical and practical knowledge has been shaped and defined by previous research traditions and, second, how the current political situation in the region impinges upon archaeological practice. Students will explore the boundaries between drawing and sculpture and will be encouraged to push the parameters of drawing. Collage, assemblage and photomontage will be used in combination with more traditional approaches to drawing. The class will explore the role of the imagination, improvisation, 3-dimensional forms, observation, memory, language, mapping, and text. Field trips to artists’ studios as well as critiques will play an important role in the course. This course surveys some of the major historiographical debates surrounding the Second World War. It aims to provide student with an international perspective of the conflict that challenges conventional understandings of the war. In particular, we will examine the ideological, imperial, and strategic dimensions of the war in a global context. Students will also design, research, and write a substantial essay of 15-18 pages in length that makes use of both primary and secondary sources.

This course is devoted to an in-depth analysis of maverick American auteur John Cassavetes work. A central figure in the New American Cinema scene in the late fifties in New York and in Independent Cinema Cassavetes was influenced by the New York School of Filmmaking—writers and actors who worked on television and acting prior to moving to Hollywood.
Shadows
(1958-59) his first feature is crucial in understanding the budding currents of experimental and indie work in early sixties in New York. His eccentricity to Hollywood, exacerbated by his acting work within the film industry, are exemplary of the struggles for an independent authorial vision.
Cassavetes narratives of individual autonomy emerge through a thematic constant: the friction between social scripts--notions of proper behavior-- and the alternate corporeal inventiveness of characters/actors. During the course we will discuss how Cassavetes aesthetics is propped on notions of individual expressivity –both his own as filmmaker and that of his characters and actors. We will discusss notions of improvisation and acting, his camera work, editing and sound. We will place his work in the context of independent cinema from the late fifties to the early eighties analyzing his eccentric relation to Hollywood.
This course will encourage modes of comparative analysis as well as further discussion on Cassavetes reception. With a focus on Cassavetes student will learn to identify auteurs according to their themes, their visual and aural style as well as manner of production; understand the relation of films to their historical and socio-cultural moment; consider the notion of American independent cinema historically with a special focus on New American cinema from the late fifties up to the 1980s.

This course explores the interrelated histories of sexuality and the city in the twentieth-century United States (especially New York) by exploring how urban conditions and processes shaped sexual practices, identities, communities, and ethics, and how sexual matters shaped urban processes, politics, and representation.

Prerequisites: (POLS UN1201) In this survey of American political development, we will discuss how and why major institutions and policies emerged, why they took certain forms, when and why they have changed over time, and what kinds of factors limit change. We will also discuss how policies, in turn, shape citizens and institutions.
The course is concerned with legal texts from the ancient world, beginning with a Sumerian murder case (19thcent. B.C.) and ending with the Burgundian Law Code (6th A.D.). The main work of the course is writing, one paper each week (ca. 500 words) that studies a text or a situation--e.g. analyzing its implied legal principles, criticizing its arguments or assumptions, or outlining a rebuttal speech. The goal is to understand the evolution of early legal thought, procedures, institutions, and methods, from the ancient Near East through the Greek city-states and the Hellenistic kingdoms to Rome and late antiquity; and to work up skills that are useful for legal analysis and forensic argument

An exploration of the early periods of French literary creation (Medieval-17th century) through works of fiction, poetry, and theatre. Special attention is given to texts that use tradition to bring about change, to provoke, to contest social norms, and to test the expected parameters of literary expression.

This course considers how identity increased, limited, controlled, or otherwise shaped the mobility of individuals and groups in the Roman world, including women, slaves, freedpeople, and diaspora communities. We will identify the structures that produced differences in mobility and consider how such groups understood and represented themselves in a variety of media as possessing a specific, shared identity and community. The course will draw on a range of primary sources, including inscriptions and literary texts (both poetry and prose), and cover the period from the second century BCE to the third century CE.
Prerequisites: (BIOL UN2005 and BIOL UN2006) This course provides an introduction to Neurogenetics, which studies the role of genetics in the development and function of the nervous system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurogenetics). The course will be focused on teaching classic and contemporary concepts in genetics and neuroscience, rather than cataloguing mere facts. The course will emphasize the discovery processes, historical figures involved in these processes and methodologies of discovery. Primary research papers will be discussed in detail. A central organizational theme of the course is the presence of a common thread and narrative throughout the course. The common thread is an invertebrate model system, the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, which serves as a paradigm to show how simple genetic model systems have informed our view on the genetics of nervous system development and function. The ultimate goal of this course is to gain an understanding of the underlying principles of how the nervous system of one specific animal species forms, from beginning to end. The course is intended for neuroscience-inclined students (e.g. neuroscience majors) who want to learn about how genetic approaches have informed our understanding of brain development and function and, vice versa, for students with an interest in molecular biology and genetics, who want to learn about key problems in neuroscience and how genetic approaches can address them.
The study of Classical antiquity has recently come to occupy a very public place in the context of what many have termed “culture war.” Graeco-Roman antiquity, with its cumbersome legacies, at times hailed as the bedrock of humanistic and democratic ideals, is now under scrutiny for its role in perpetrating exclusive and oppressive ideologies. At the same time, many have turned to Classics to defy these ideologies, repurposing ancient texts to reaffirm identities that were at odds with dominant norms. This course traces the public role of Classics across three modules. First, we discuss how primary evidence has been deployed to craft exclusive identities and ideal publics. Second, we look at how “unideal” publics (women, POCs, LGBTQ+, working class individuals, incarcerated people, etc.) have reacted, by co-opting Graeco-Roman antiquity and reading it subversively. Third, we explore the relationship between the public(s) and Classics as an academic field, especially in light of the current crises in the humanities. No prerequisites.

Political parties have evoked widespread scorn in the U.S. since the founding era; and yet, they arose almost immediately and have endured for over two centuries. In this course, we will examine why parties formed despite the Founders’ disdain for them. (In 1789, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go at all.” In 1800, he won the presidency as a candidate of a major party.) We will dig into scholarly debates about what exactly parties are, what purpose they serve, and how and why they have changed over time as organizations, in the electorate, and in government. Topics will include the presidential nomination process from the founding through the much-discussed 2016 primary election season, the life cycle of third parties, and the relationship between political parties and interest groups. Students will learn what is and is not unique about the current historical moment, and how history might shape our expectations of parties moving forward. Throughout the course, we will pay particularly close attention to the roots of contemporary party polarization, and the implications of this phenomenon for representation and governance. In 1950, the American Political Science Association released a report criticizing the two major parties for excessive similarity; today, party polarization evokes widespread concern. Is there an ideal level of party difference? How much is too much? We will address these difficult questions, among others, in this broad survey of American political parties.
Prerequisites: (ECON BC3035 or ECON UN3211) The purpose of the course is to think about public policy issues through an economic lens. We will explore the basic economic foundations of individual decision-making and discuss the ways in which economists hypothesize that individuals respond to the incentives embedded within public policies. We will pay particular attention to the nature and detail of existing public policies, and use economic analysis to predict how these policies might influence behavior. We will also explore some of the relevant empirical literature on a set of policy topics, to see how these predictions hold up.
