This course explores education as a process through which critical consciousness and epistemic justice combat oppression in communities. Students will connect seminal work by critical pedagogues, such as Paolo Freire and bell hooks, to systemic educational challenges and lived experience. As a class, we will investigate power dynamics and structural inequalities at the systemic, institutional, interpersonal and individual levels. Students will problem-pose, dialogue and create pedagogical tools through praxis, by integrating the theory learned in the class to educational practice.
This course explores the meaning of American citizenship in connection with the country’s immigration history. Topics include historic pathways to citizenship for migrants; barriers to citizenship including wealth, race, gender, beliefs and documentation; and critical issues such as colonialism, statelessness, dual nationality, and birthright citizenship. We will ask how have people become citizens and under what authority has that citizenship been granted? What are the historic barriers to citizenship and how have they shifted over time? What major questions remain unanswered by Congress and the Supreme Court regarding the rights of migrants to attain and retain American citizenship?
Finance is a central aspect of modern economic life. Its function is to allow for economic growth, by moving capital to where it is most needed. Without finance, the world as we know it would come to a halt: no houses would be built, no machines maintained, no companies founded, no research funded, no salaries paid. Yet, despite – or exactly because of – its pervasiveness and importance, finance is often taught either as a technical matter, as a set of skills that students can sell to future employers, or depicted as a black box, its insides shrouded in mystery, accessible only to specialists with extensive mathematical or legal skills. The main objective of this class is to lift this veil of mystery and to teach students – whether or not they have any interest in working in the financial industry – the knowledge and analytical tools to confidently approach finance and better understand its role in our lives. We’ll investigate questions such as, What is money? Why do people who work in finance tend to be male and white? How does finance relate to inequality in society? How have financial institutions and technologies shaped politics over the course of history – and vice versa? The approach taken in this class, then, differs from the perspective internal to finance that courses in disciplines such as accounting, business studies, and also economics typically provide. In other words, this class will only be marginally helpful for you if you primarily want to learn specific financial techniques. Instead, we will investigate how finance relates to other parts of social life using the tools sociology and other social sciences provide us with. The central premise of this class is that finance, and economic activity more generally, is just as ‘social’ as any other activity we engage in. Even more, since finance is so central to social life, not only does sociology help us to understand finance; rather, finance provides a distinct vantage point from which to observe and understand society.

“Space and Society in the Roman World” offers an introduction to Roman social history through the study of architecture and building typologies. The ruins so synonymous with Roman antiquity were all once strong and complete buildings and spaces in which people lived their lives in antiquity. Daily occurrences, major life moments, and everything in between took place within the built environment of urban centers. While a building cannot directly provide its own account of the past, its layout and features offer windows into understanding the space's original function and use within Roman society; the priorities and interests of individuals, families, communities, and even a culture can be glimpsed through their architectural choices. Romans devised, constructed, and used architecture both as a product and expression of their society. This class offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Roman society in the Imperial period. The art historical and archaeological evidence of the ancient built environment serves as the foundation for our investigation of Roman social history. Each week focuses on a different building typology or an aspect of Roman architecture that relates to a facet of Roman life across the Empire. The first half of the semester is devoted to domestic spaces, namely elite homes, and serves as an introduction to the mechanics and hierarchies of Roman society across social strata (e.g., patronage, banqueting, slavery, economic inequality). The second half addresses buildings from the public sphere of urban environments to examine societal concerns and interests (e.g., civic life, commerce, religion, hygiene, entertainment). Over the course of the semester, we will explore the relationship between society and the built environment. Students can expect to gain a general understanding of Roman social history, both the topic and the field at large, as well as major architectural typologies from the Roman world. The course will also teach students how to effectively use different forms of evidence, particularly archaeological evidence, for the study of ancient societies. Course work will include weekly blog posts, a presentation in class, a midterm paper (ca. 1,500 words), and a final paper (ca. 3,000 words) – in addition to regular attendance, class participation and preparation. This course explores the role of the presidency in U.S. politics. Presidents have long been at the center of politics, yet the nature of the presidency has changed dramatically over time. The first part of the course will examine these long-run changes. It begins with debates over the form of the presidency at the U.S.’s founding and examines how the institution has been altered – and with what effects – at key historical moments. Having gained foundational historical knowledge during the first part of the course, the course’s second part will focus on various theories of the presidency. These theories primarily address, in various ways, one primary question: which factors best explain presidential “success”? By the end of the course, students should be able to systematically assess contemporary presidential politics using various scholarly theories and by putting the president’s actions into a broader historical context. The course, occurring during the 2020 presidential primaries, will also include “sidebars” in which we will discuss the election.

Feminism is often recognized as a political movement. But is there a feminist way of thinking about politics? In this course, we’ll investigate the core premises, provocations, proposals, and tensions of feminism as they relate to specifically political problems, focusing particularly on feminist political thought as it developed in the twentieth century. Who is the subject of feminist politics? What is the meaning of “difference,” and how can—or should—feminists seek to organize across it? What are appropriate topics for politics, and what should remain private? Is the family a space for politics? The household? The body? How much of the personal can, and should, be made political? Are there feminist ways of
doing
politics? We will consider these questions with reference to texts from both feminist activists and feminist scholars.

Through close readings of majors texts, an examination of how these 19th-century poets brought about a "revolution" in language and thought that gave rise to the Modernism that transformed literature and the arts and whose influence is still with us today.
This seminar will examine how fiction in postwar Britain was transformed by developments in architecture and urban design in the 20th and 21st centuries. From high-rises and high-density housing to suburbs and urban sprawl, from the privatization of public space to the rise of surveillance architecture, we will examine how writers after WWII turned new developments in architecture into new kinds of stories and storytelling. We’ll learn about developments in urban design while centering our attention on close reading and narrative. While emphasizing the novel, we’ll also read short stories, architectural criticism, essays, and zines. We’ll read novels by George Orwell, Zadie Smith, J.G. Ballard, Anthony Burgess, Pat Barker, and Jenni Fagan as well as architectural writings by Le Corbusier, Alison and Peter Smithson, Archigram, and Denise Scott Brown. We’ll consider both architecture and fiction as speculative arts, in which unbuilt projects can tell us as much about cities, society, and storytelling as the built environment can. Through practices of close reading and research, we’ll learn to think across disciplines and explore how both architecture and fiction imagine utopia, dystopia, and the architecture of everyday life.
Globalization and mass migration are reconfiguring the modern world and reshaping the contours of nation-states. New technologies that facilitate the movement of information, goods and people across borders have made it easier for people to remain culturally, politically, economically and socially connected to the places from which they migrated. This seminar focuses on the experiences of the youngest members of these global migration patterns—children and youth—and asks: What do these global flows mean for educating young people to be members of the multiple communities to which they belong? This seminar will explore the following questions: What is globalization and why is it leading to new patterns of migration? How do children and youth experience ruptures and continuities across contexts of migration? How do language policies affect young people’s capacity to be educated in a new land? What does it mean to forge a sense of belonging and citizenship in a “globalized” world, and how does this challenge our models of national citizenship? How are the processes by which young people are incorporated into their new country entwined with structures of race, class, and gender? Drawing on fiction, autobiography, and anthropological and sociological research this class will explore these questions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

Broadly, this course explores the relationship between gender, sexuality, and schooling across national contexts. We begin by considering theoretical perspectives, exploring the ways in which gender and sexuality have been studied and understood in the interdisciplinary field of education. Next, we consider the ways in which the subjective experience of gender and sexuality in schools is often overlooked or inadequately theorized. Exploring the ways that race, class, citizenship, religion and other categories of identity intersect with gender and sexuality, we give primacy to the contention that subjectivity is historically complex, and does not adhere to the analytically distinct identity categories we might try to impose on it.
The seminar will look at the structure of the novel, its plan, with special attention paid to ‘The Odyssey’, but also to the variations in tone in the book, the parodies and elaborate games becoming more complex as the book proceeds. We will examine a number of Irish texts that are relevant to the making of ‘Ulysses’, including Robert Emmett’s speech from the dock, Yeats’s ‘The Countess Cathleen’ and Lady Gregory translations from Irish folk-tales.
The History of the Jewish Enlightenment (Haskala) in 19th century Europe and the development of Zionism through the current peace process between the state of Israel and the Arab states and the Palestinian national movement. Provides a historical overview of the Zionist-Palestinian conflict to familiarize undergraduates with the background of the current situation. No P/D/F or R credit is allowed for this class.
This course deals with topics in both monetary theory and monetary policy and is designed for students interested in monetary economics and/or those aiming at working in policy institutions such as central banks. Monetary economics examines the relationship between real economic variables at the aggregate level and nominal variables (such as the inflation rate, nominal interest rates, nominal exchange rates, and the supply of money). Therefore, monetary economics overlaps significantly with macroeconomics. However, students in this class learn the "Money View" framework as their analytical tool as it provides a more in-depth treatment of money and central banking than is customary
in standard macroeconomics textbooks.

This course reviews the assumption of rationality in microeconomic theory and presents evidence (primarily from experimental psychology and economics) of how judgement and decision-making systematically deviate from what rationality predicts.
Capitalism is usually thought of as an economic system, but what does it have to do with politics? This course examines how thinkers of contrasting perspectives have understood capitalism politically. Some have celebrated the market as an escape from coercion, while others criticize it as a source of disguised domination; some see capitalism as leveling social hierarchies, while others point to its creation of class and racial hierarchy; some see capitalism as an engine of wealth creation and heightened living standards, while others emphasize its destruction of existing ways of life and production of inequality; some see capitalism as an engine of peace, while others emphasize its reliance on violence. In particular, we will consider the relationship between state and market, moral critiques of markets and exchange, analyses of the role of force and violence in accumulation, and theories of freedom and domination.
Health economics is an expansive and growing field within the larger microeconomic literature. From examining the impact of Medicaid on health care utilization to the public health consequences of marijuana legalization, health economics offers a variety of profound economic insights and policy recommendations. This course uses many familiar concepts from microeconomic theory and econometrics in order to better understand health and healthcare—with students engaging economic models describing the demand for health, addiction, medical care, health insurance, and risky behaviors in addition to interpreting important empirical evidence within these spaces.

This seminar serves as the capstone course for students pursuing the Education Studies minor/special concentration or the Urban Studies major/concentration with an Urban Education Specialization. The Seminar in Urban Education explores the historical, political and socio-cultural dynamics of urban education in the U.S. context. Over time, a range of social actors have intervened in the “problem” of urban education, attempting to reshape and reform urban schools. Others have disputed this “problem” focused approach, arguing that policy makers, teachers, and researchers should start from the strengths and capacities located in urban communities. Despite decades of wide ranging reform efforts, however, many urban schools still fail to provide their students with an adequate, equitable education. Seminar in Urban Education investigates this paradox by pursuing three central course questions: 1) How have various social actors tried to achieve equity in urban schools over time? 2) What are the range and variation of assets and challenges found in urban schools? and 3) Considering this history and context, what would effective reform in a global city like NYC look like? Students will engage these questions not only through course readings and seminar discussions, but through a 40-hour field placement in a New York City public school classroom, extra-curricular program, or other education based site.

, a powerful model organism used in hundreds of research labs. The course will be divided into three modules:

Prerequisites: one year of Intro Bio. An introductory biology or chemistry lab is recommended. Bacteria are not just unicellular germs. This lab course will broaden your awareness of the amazing world of microbiology and the diverse capabilities of microbes. The focus will be on bacterial multicellularity, pigment production, and intercellular signaling. Pigment-producing bacteria will be isolated from the wild (i.e. Morningside Campus or your skin), and characterized using standard genetic tools (PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, transformation, screen) and microbiology techniques (isolation of bacteria and growth of bacterial colonies, media preparation, enrichment techniques for pigments). These techniques will also be applied in the study of bacterial multicellularity and signaling in the standard lab strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The Arctic region is warming more than twice as fast as the rest of the world, and greater portions of the Arctic Ocean are becoming ice-free much faster than anyone had expected even a few years ago. This is having a huge impact on the politics of the region, and is what social scientists call a “natural experiment” (even though it is the result of human activity) or an “exogenous shock” to the status quo. The fact of climate change has implications for virtually every realm of politics and policy: from local governance to cooperative international institutions, from commercial trade to military security, from environmental disasters to economic windfalls (including for indigenous communities). In this colloquium we will explore these changes and their implications, relating each of them to enduring concepts in political science. Each student will choose one case (or a set of related cases) to explore in depth, in an original, argumentative, independent research paper.

What does it mean to be middle class in America, and what has it meant historically? This course examines the history of middle-class status in America, from the early days of professionalization and corporate bureaucracy, to the progressive era political mobilization, to the mid-century consumerist era, to the present white collar precariat. By looking at cultural habits, social organization, and political engagement, and by examining materials from living room furniture to avocado toast, we'll chart the rise and fall of the most sought-after class denomination in American history.
This seminar examines the history of the French language, both in France and in the many areas of the world in which French is a primary language. In the first part of the semester we engage in a chronological study of how the language emerged from a fusion of late medieval Latin with Germanic dialects to become a strong national institution. The development of the language is contextualized by consideration of the social and political history of France. We also devote two weeks of discussion to the situation of the French language today, with topics such as linguistic legislation, regional languages and dialects today, and gender inclusivity. This diachronic approach is carried over into the second part of the semester in which we concentrate on French in several regions outside of France including the Caribbean, North Africa, Central Africa, and North America. Here we examine how the language was first introduced, what it represented at different moments in history, the relation of French to other languages, and the situation of French in the region today. Work for the course includes a digital project (digital timeline and map, and website) to document visually the presence of French in the world, across history and in the 21st century.
Prerequisites: CHEM UN3079 Corequisites: CHEM UN3086 CHEM UN3080 covers the quantum mechanics of atoms and molecules, the quantum statistical mechanics of chemical systems, and the connection of statistical mechanics to thermodynamics. Prerequisites: PHYS UN3003 or PHYS UN3007 May be taken before or concurrently with this course. A sequence of experiments in solid-state electronics, with introductory lectures.
The “Quantum Simulation and Computing Lab” will give students hands-on experience in quantum optics, quantum simulation and quantum computing. The course combines lectures, tutorials, and two lab sections. In one lab section, students will do experiments with entangled photons. In the second lab section, students will program quantum computers and run algorithms on them using the IBM Qiskit platform. The course starts with a recap of linear algebra and quantum mechanics, followed by an introduction to quantum optics and quantum information. Two-level systems, Bloch sphere, quantum gates, and elementary quantum algorithms will be discussed. Quantum teleportation and quantum key distribution will be introduced as applications of entanglement. The lecture content will be directly applied in experiments with entangled photons. In the following, state-of-the-art quantum algorithms will be discussed, related to cutting-edge research results in quantum computing. This includes quantum Fourier transform, quantum simulation of the Schroedinger equation, and the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. During the course students will do one experimental project with entangled photons and one quantum programming project. Students will be guided to implement a quantum algorithm of their choice and run it on a quantum computer (IBM, IonQ, QuEra).
Prerequisites: CHEM UN3085 , CHEM UN3080 is acceptable corequisite for CHEM UN3086. A student-centered experimental course intended for students who are co-registered or have complete CHEM UN3079 and CHEM UN3080. The course emphasizes techniques of experimental physical chemistry and instrumental analysis, including vibrational, electronic, and laser spectroscopy; electroanalytical methods; calorimetry; reaction kinetics; hydrodynamic methods; scanning probe microscopy; applications of computers to reduce experimental data; and computational chemistry. Experiments illustrating phenomenological aspects of the early quantum theory: (i) Hydrogenic Spectra: Balmer Series - Bohr-Sommerfeld Model; (ii) Photoelectric Effect: Millikans Determination of h/e; (iii) Franck-Hertz Experiment; and (iv) Electron Diffraction Phenomena. Substantial preparation required, including written and oral presentations, as well as an interest in developing the knack and intuition of an experimental physicist. This is the second semester of a year-long senior capstone experience for Educational Studies majors. Over the course of the year, you will design and carry-out an inquiry project, and you will report on this project through an appropriate medium, for a specific purpose and audience.
French majors will write their senior thesis under the supervision of the instructor.
Prerequisites: the instructors permission for entrance, and the departmental representatives permission for aggregate points in excess of 12 or less than 4. This course may be repeated for credit (see major and concentration requirements). Individual research under the supervision of a member of the staff. This course examines the experience of people living in the Soviet Union via things. Objects under socialist regimes were supposed to be transformative, turning yesterday’s backwards peasants into new communist men and women. Communism promised unheard of abundance, but those who lived under it often suffered from severe shortages. Things from outside of the communist world often took on an aura of forbidden fruit. People learned a variety of tricks to survive, and today are even nostalgic for many of its trappings.

This course can be worth 1 to 4 credits (each credit is equivalent to approximately three hours of work per week) and requires a Barnard faculty as a mentor who has to provide written approval. The course entails a scholarly component; for this, a research report is required by the end of the term. The research report can take the form that best suits the nature of the project. The course will be taken for a letter grade, regardless of whether the student chooses 1, 2, 3, or 4 credits.

An introduction to the conventions, traditions, values, assumptions, and arguments that have shaped the institution of journalism and its central role in public life. Through close readings/viewings of current and classic works of journalism as well as secondary sources, we explore some of the Big Questions: What is journalism for? What is its role in public life, and how has that changed over time? Is objectivity dead--or should it be? How have new technologies affected our expectations? Is sensationalism bad for you? What is the future of journalism? The focus is on the American experience from the colonial era to the present day, though we will also draw comparisons with international developments.
An inquiry into the nature and implications of justice in areas ranging from criminal justice to social justice to the circumstances of war and peace, considering issues such as abortion, the criminalization of behavior, the death penalty, climate change, global poverty, civil disobedience, and international conflict.
Many of the greatest challenges in public health are global. This course uses a multidisciplinary approach to discuss the major underlying determinants of poor health and the relationship between health and political, social and economic development. Drawing upon the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, students will be introduced to the evolution of modern approaches to the setting of global health priorities, the functions and roles of health systems, an overview of current global health practices, and the major institutional players in global health. The first unit of the class will focus on establishing the foundations for a public health approach to understanding the challenges of global health. This will involve exploration of the factors shaping the global distribution of disease and their connection with issues of social, economic, and political development, as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals. The second unit will explore in further detail a number of major health priorities. A significant goal of the class will be to identify common sources of vulnerability and challenge across health risks, and the consequent need for a systemic approach to their being addressed. The third and final unit builds upon this analysis to demonstrate the multi-disciplinary, multi-level approach required to effectively address global health priorities, and the political and organizational cooperation required to achieve this. The class concludes with an analysis of the major challenges and threats to global coordination regarding such threats as pandemic influenza and emerging health threats related to climate change. Building on the work of the Intermediate Workshop, Advanced Workshops are reserved for the most accomplished creative writing students. A significant body of writing must be produced and revised. Particular attention will be paid to the components of fiction: voice, perspective, characterization, and form. Students will be expected to finish several short stories, executing a total artistic vision on a piece of writing. The critical focus of the class will include an examination of endings and formal wholeness, sustaining narrative arcs, compelling a reader's interest for the duration of the text, and generating a sense of urgency and drama in the work.
