Includes learning from and evaluating with customers, creating new ideas collaboratively as part of a team, simple ways to prototype both physical and digital experience, and presenting ideas with impact. Develop skills and experience by practicing process as they engage in various design challenges.
Introduction to theory and practice of computer user interface design, emphasizes software design of user interfaces in websites, automobiles, IoT, etc. Topics include basic interaction devices and techniques, human factors, interaction styles, dialogue design, and software infrastructure. Design and programming projects are required.
Intended to build familiarity with using Python for ingesting, analyzing, visualizing, and interpreting data. Includes data ingesting techniques, using libraries (pandas and numpy), data analytics, machine learning (using SciKit-Learn), visualization, and big data analytics (Spark).
Survey of frontier research in technological areas to address world's most important challenges. Areas include advanced materials, biotech, and sustainability and climate. Convergence of breakthrough research with entrepreneurship, industry, and policy.
Covers fundamental engineering design tools for creating and testing physical products. Includes basics of computer-aided design, circuit design and use of microcontrollers, Internet of Things, and computational modeling and simulation. Additional hands-on exposure to tools for high-fidelity physical prototyping in Makerspace. Mini-project design involving an engineering device or system incorporated tools.
English communication proficiency is important for academic achievement and career success. Columbia Engineering provides English communication instruction for students who would like to improve their communication skills in English. In a small group setting (15-20 students), enrollees will obtain opportunities to interact with the instructor and fellow classmates to improve communication skills.
For first year doctoral students, emphasizing the skills needed for success in orienting them to Columbia and doctoral studies, including teaching and presentation skills (i.e., Microteaching, how to grade, hold office hours, conduct recitations, etc.); cultivating relationships with mentors, faculty, and colleagues; inclusivity; managing your budget; wellness; research and academic integrity and ethics.
Strategic and tactical aspects of communication for effective planning, creation, and execution of communication with impact. Prepares students for doctoral program milestones (poster sessions, conference presentations, dissertation proposals, and defense, job talks, and professional lectures). Focus on (1) describing technical research to various audiences (2) crafting compelling narratives and storytelling; (3) understanding the power of effective communication in advancing academic or industry careers.
Fieldwork is integral to the academic preparation and professional development of doctoral students. This course provides the academic framework for fieldwork experience required for the student’s program of study. Fieldwork documentation and faculty adviser approval is required prior to registration. A final written report must be submitted. This course will count toward the degree program and cannot be taken for pass/fail credit or audited. With approval from the department chair or the doctoral program director, doctoral students can register for this course at most twice. In rare situations, exceptions may be granted by the Dean's Office to register for the course more than twice (e.g., doctoral students funded by industrial grants who wish to perform doctoral fieldwork for their corporate sponsor). The doctoral student must be registered for this course during the same term as the fieldwork experience.
