The course covers option deals, copyrights, dealing with agents, lawyers and managers, working with writers, guild requirements and the selling process. There is a particular emphasis on learning pitching skills in order to effectively communicate the essence of a project to potential collaborators, financiers and end users. Required for all second-year Creative Producing students and only open to students in that concentration.
This course provides an introduction to nonprofit and social enterprise finance, financial management and budgeting. The course is practical and hands-on. The course will examine how the principles of financial planning and management assist nonprofit managers in making operating, program and long-term financial decisions. Through the use of readings, discussions, Case Studies, Excel labs, and a consulting project, students will learn underlying concepts as well as practical skills. No prior finance or budgeting experience is required and there is no prerequisite for this course. The course is designed to give students a range of core financial and managerial skills that are especially relevant to students who want to go on to establish, manage or work in nonprofit organizations or social enterprises.

All art is political, but some art is made as a form of protest or to incite an audience to protest. Most often it is both. This course – though far from exhaustive in its coverage – will present a sample of genres (music, plastic arts, theater, dance, installation, photography) in a variety of locations and times to understand how art and artists have engaged in protest. Much of modern art is conceptual, using installations and performance, to communicate. Therefore, we will start the class by turning to T. J. Clark, the preeminent art historian, for his answer to the question, when did modern art begin? This question will lead us to explore the debate on the purpose of art. We will then move to how artists responded to moments of crisis in the early 20th century - world wars, economic depression, and the rise of fascism – because the art that emerged informs much of what we see today. Based on these foundational questions, the class will turn to case studies from around the globe.
Emerging markets (EMs) are volatile animals. Firms operating in EMs may suddenly face higher inflation and interest rates, credit scarcity, and a devaluation, forcing many to file for bankruptcy. How could firms protect from currency risks? Are hedging practices foolproof? What are the sources of credit available for firms? Are shadow financial sectors the solution to sustaining a firm’s working capital? What resources do firms have to mitigate a credit shock?
During the whole semester, students will work in teams to analyze the financial challenges that firms face in an emerging market of their choice. In the process of doing so, you will have the opportunity to use all the macro-financial and corporate finance concepts and frameworks learned in other courses and links involved. Your team will be able to present its work to class and receive feedback on content and presentation. By means of case studies, discussions, and contributions for guest speakers—most from international organizations--and yourself, the course will cover all the challenges described above.
Even in the midst of resurging nationalism, we continue to live in an intensely interconnected world where distant protests trigger local action, local pathogens seed global pandemics, international maneuverings cause local wars, faraway wars bring migrants and refugees to one’s community, global finance reshapes cityscapes, and a mounting climate crisis creates new living conditions everywhere. While studies of “globalization” often take a birds-eye view of the impacts of global interconnectivity, this course focuses also on regions, localities, and our own communities, as we seek to make sense of how the spaces that exist all around us are implicated in, and generative of, various kinds of global flows, ranging from capital, goods, and people to ideas, cultural products, and aesthetic preferences. Our broader aim, then, is to understand how the mutual imbrication of the local and the global generates tendencies that simultaneously flatten space and accentuate disparate socio-spatial dynamics and inequalities. In turn, we will also hone methodologies for investigating the complex and uneven ways global phenomena continually reshape communities and individual lives.
This course is timely and urgent as the world confronts challenges that require coordination and collaboration at and between the local, regional, national, and global levels. This moment requires us to think locally and globally at the same time, as we endeavor to understand, define, and address global problems. To this end, students will collaborate on group research projects to develop comparative, transdisciplinary, and contextual perspectives on how global issues resonate across different geographical scales and to explore ways to address the challenges that confront the world.
In this class, we are interested in how gender and sexuality have been constructed in the past and present. The class will be divided into four units, for which our guiding questions are as follows: 1. How should one teach and write about the history of sexuality? In a time when queer people remain under threat in much of the world, including this country, is it better to look for readily identifiable queer forebears in past periods? Or should we, on the contrary, seek to avoid any kind of anachronism in looking for queerness in the past, hewing strictly to the non-normative or deviant categories labeled explicitly by past thinkers? Is there a third way? 2. How have gender and sex been constructed in the past (as a binary, a spectrum, or something else?). Are they a function of sexual ‘orientation’ (if one can even speak of such a thing before the 19th C) or the other way around? How have they been constructed recently? 3. How do social and political factors condition our sexual desires? Should the bedroom be a battleground for a political agenda, as some anti-porn feminists (and others) claim, or should we decide that sexual desires are outside the bounds of morality and/or politics? Can we interrogate the conditions surrounding our sexual desires without imposing moral norms around them? 4. What are some of the recent debates in queer theory? How do issues of race and disability intersect with gender, sex, and sexual orientation? How has the category of ‘trans’ involved a rethinking of sex and gender? Has queer theory strayed too far from sexuality?

Many of the decisions we make and actions we take have profound environmental effects, yet economic and political considerations often dominate decision-making in a way that fails to take into account the environmental foundation of our livelihoods. A slow, yet steady extension of environmental imperatives into previously ‘non’ environmental sectors such as agriculture, trade and energy production, provide some movement towards sustainability. This class explores how the political system identifies public issues as problems requiring public action, and creates and implements policy solutions. It assesses what conditions foster change by anticipating likely outcomes and effective points of intervention to achieve policy goals. It emphasizes the politics of environmental policymaking, using energy, agriculture and forestry as cases of global enterprises with local to global scales of inquiry. We will explore the tension between the market and economic models and politics and political models of policymaking; interests and interest-group politics; the connections among expertise, knowledge, and policymaking; and the particular politics of policy issues that cross jurisdictional boundaries, including federalism and globalization. We will start the semester considering two contrasting theories of policymaking: an economic, market-based approach with application in environmental policy issues and a political approach. The latter constitutes a critique of the economic paradigm and sets up the tension between the concerns for policy efficiency and effectiveness stemming from the economic model, and those of equity, representation, and consensus derived from the political model. Participants will develop a sense of the history of environmental activism, relevant actors in environmental politics and management, their roles, sources of power and influence, the effects of formal political processes and the sources of potential conflicts.

Public sector budgeting in the United States, and perhaps globally, has become increasingly contentious in the aftermath of the2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession. This course introduces students to the field of budgeting and fiscal management in the public sector. We will look at the special challenges of developing a budget within a political environment and the techniques used for reporting, accountability and management control. Domestically, the landscape for government budgeting is being tested in unprecedented ways. Fiscal pressures at the federal and state levels have increasingly pushed responsibilities for program funding to the local level. Municipal bankruptcy, once a theoretical and untested concept, has emerged more frequently as a solution despite its long-term consequences. Selected topics will include inter-governmental relationships, taxes and other revenues, expenditure control, audits and productivity enhancement. Lectures will also address current events related to public sector budgeting at all levels, especially as the world continues to confront the COVID-19 global pandemic and the ensuing economic and fiscal crises. This course seeks to provide students with practical knowledge for budgetary and financial analysis. Drawing from theory and from case studies, students will acquire practical skills to help them design, implement and assess public sector budgets. The practical nature of the subject requires the students’ active hands-on participation in assignments such as in-class debates, case analyses and a budget cycle simulation. By the end of the semester, conscientious students will be able to formulate budgetary recommendations backed up by cogent analysis and calculations.

This course examines the political economy of the major oil and gas exporters of the Arabian Peninsula. It begins with a view of state formation and development of their energy industries. It follows with a theoretical overview of the concept of economic statecraft and then explores how, when and why the Gulf Arab states (specifically, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar) have used tools of financial intervention, buoyed by oil and gas revenue, to achieve foreign policy goals. The Gulf Arab states are development actors in a class of their own, often able to deploy sums of direct support that international financial institutions and international organizations cannot match in either investment or aid. How are the Gulf states emerging as development actors across the Middle East, Africa and Asia? What are the implications for investment in clean energy and the energy transition in the Gulf and in recipient states?
This course will take a deep dive into a 10-step set of decisions involved in designing and implementing an effective carbon market or tax system across a range of conditions and sectors from power and industry to transportation, waste, forestry and agriculture. The course will consider emissions trading, carbon taxes, and hybrid and complementary programs in an integrated manner. The class will highlight real-world examples throughout and identify lessons learned and common challenges based on international experiences with carbon pricing to date across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania. Students will learn design principles and tradeoffs, perspectives of key stakeholders, and modeling tools and frameworks to inform policy choices and market participants’ decisions. The course will include a hands-on emissions trading simulation exercise as well as guest talks by market actors to illustrate concepts in practice. By the end of the course, students will have evaluated alternative policies and be prepared to understand, navigate, and potentially shape future carbon pricing policy developments.
This class will look at the obstacles and opportunities for financing the energy transition in emerging markets. We will start by studying what the energy transition is, how it relates to climate goals, and what it entails to understand what needs to be financed. The course will then look at the different estimates of how much will the energy transition costs and what this means for emerging markets. The class will survey the current financial energy landscape to assess what is working, what is missing, and the potential governance structures that are needed to mobilize such financing. We will survey the existing sources of financing from the private sector, development agencies, and international financial institutions to understand the specific challenges and opportunities for each source of financing. The course will also look at the financing toolkit available, from blended finance vehicles, de-risking instruments, and the new ones that are being deployed, like ESG investing and thematic bonds. The course will also introduce students to carbon markets and the role they can play in financing the energy transition in emerging markets. Lastly, the course will also survey the financing of transition assets to understand how and when capital should be deployed and what this means to retire or retrofit existing fossil fuel assets.
This is a specialized course designed to provide prospective producers with a nuanced framework for understanding the screenwriting process. The course will explore all the ways a producer might interact with screenwriters and screenplays, including coverage, script analysis, notes, treatments, and rewrites. Each student will complete a series of writing and rewriting assignments over the course of the semester. Required for all second-year Creative Producing students and only open to students in that concentration.
This course will prepare the student in ambulatory care nursing practice as defined by nursing practice outside of the acute care setting. It will cover the spectrum of ambulatory care nursing roles and responsibilities in caring for individuals, families, communities, and populations across outpatient settings to include, but not limited to outpatient clinics, telehealth service environments, freestanding community facilities, nurse managed clinics, managed care organizations, and patient homes. The course will include an overview of primary palliative care nursing.
This seminar will give the student the opportunity to demonstrate and experience an understanding of ambulatory care nursing practice. A particular focus will be placed on the assessment of communities and populations with an emphasis on social determinants and their impact on health.
Students spend two to four days per week studying the clinical aspects of radiation therapy physics. Projects on the application of medical physics in cancer therapy within a hospital environment are assigned; each entails one or two weeks of work and requires a laboratory report. Two areas are emphasized: 1. computer-assisted treatment planning (design of typical treatment plans for various treatment sites including prostate, breast, head and neck, lung, brain, esophagus, and cervix) and 2. clinical dosimetry and calibrations (radiation measurements for both photon and electron beams, as well as daily, monthly, and part of annual QA).

Through readings and films, and employing the theoretical concepts of Homi Bhabha (liminality, hybridity, third space) and Etienne Balibar (frontiers and the nation), as well as selected readings of Fernand Braudel and others on the Mediterranean world, the course examines the structure, meaning, and function of ancient, medieval, and early modern frametale narratives, using as theoretical frame in three ways: 1) Theory and practice of frames. Frames are not neutral; they can be narrative seductions, guiding and even strongly manipulating how we read the stories that follow; they can be used to reflect the intersections of orality and literacy. In order to understand their enduring power, we also explore the idea of literary frames through some contemporary films. 2) The exploration in their cultural contexts of topics such as the literary figures of the anti-hero and the trickster, precursors to the picaresque, women in the courtroom, the conflict of chance and human agency, monstrous births as political prophecy, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish relations in medieval and early modern Mediterranean cultures, the sexual frankness of the novella form, and gender politics. 3) How are narratives formed? The course traces the development of the short tale/novella from its ancient Asian origins through the seventeenth century, when Cervantes literary experiments gave new life to the novella form, and the Spanish writer María de Zayas challenged Cervantes views on love and marriage in her own highly regarded collections of novellas; we move to the present with the study of three contemporary films. But before they became complex and entertaining narratives, many of the well known tales had their bare bones origins in joke books, laws and legal theories, conduct manuals, collections of aphorisms and other wise and pithy sayings, misogynist non-fiction writings, and Biblical stories. Although the works are available in English translations, lectures will refer to meanings in both English and the original languages; students who can read the original works in Span
Advanced technology applications in radiation therapy physics, including intensity modulated, image guided, stereotactic, and hypofractionated radiation therapy. Emphasis on advanced technological, engineering, clinical, and quality assurance issues associated with high technology radiation therapy and the special role of the medical physicist in the safe clinical application of these tools.
Practical applications of diagnostic radiology for various measurements and equipment assessments. Instruction and supervised practice in radiation safety procedures, image quality assessments, regulatory compliance, radiation dose evaluations and calibration of equipment. Students participate in clinical QC of the following imaging equipment: radiologic units (mobile and fixed), fluoroscopy units (mobile and fixed), angiography units, mammography units, CT scanners, MRI units and ultrasound units. The objective is familiarization in routine operation of test instrumentation and QC measurements utilized in diagnostic medical physics. Students are required to submit QC forms with data on three different types of radiology imaging equipment.
Pre-Production of the Motion Picture teaches Creative Producing students how to breakdown, schedule and prep all aspects of a low budget independent feature film. Using one shooting script as a case study, the class will learn to think critically and master each step of the pre-production process. Students will prepare script breakdowns, production strip boards, call sheets and a full production binder. Topics will include state tax incentives, payroll services, union contracts, deal memos/hiring paperwork, casting, labor laws, hiring BTL crew, legal, insurance and deliverables. Additionally, students will become proficient in Movie Magic Scheduling. Required for all second-year Creative Producing students and only open to students in that concentration.

On the eve of America’s Revolutionary War in 1776, Thomas Paine exclaimed, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again.” Two centuries later, in the post-Cold War 1990s, the United States stood alone as the world’s unrivaled global hegemon, dominant in economic, military, and cultural power. Presidents of both parties began promising a permanently transformed “new world order” based on American ideals, with the United States acting as the world’s “indispensable nation.” The quarter-century since has not been easy – terror attacks followed by multiple foreign wars; a U.S.-driven global financial meltdown; rising global and regional powers like China, Russia, and Iran; emerging threats from new cyber technologies and climate change; along with growing restiveness and anti-liberal populism from within the United States itself. And yet, despite these challenges and setbacks, the United States remains the most important actor in international relations; the one county whose power, purpose, and policy choices impact nearly every issue of global significance, and whose role will necessarily shape the future of world politics. Understanding this uniquely consequential role of America in world affairs – how it developed, the ideals and interests guiding it, and the challenges and adaptations over time – is the goal of the International Fellows Program (IFP). Though America never relinquished the radical sentiments espoused by Paine, the manner in which it fashions its foreign policy is – and has always been – shaped by multiple influences and tensions, including international threats and opportunities, and a rambunctiously democratic political system that orients itself toward passionate disagreement, partisan conflict, and a penchant for new ideas. Members of the IFP will explore these foundations, trace the rise of U.S. power along with changing conceptions of its role in the world, and ultimately assess the utility, viability, and sustainability of America’s current and future role in world politics. The IFP extends over the entire academic year. The single most important requirement for IFP members is to participate actively in our weekly meetings, most of which will consist of a roughly 50-minute lecture followed by one hour of class discussion of assigned readings and lectures. Over the past decade, the number of civil wars globally has increased dramatically, driven by a proliferation of non-state armed groups, illicit transnational networks and regional actors. The rise of civil wars has meant conflicts are not only harder to resolve via traditional forms of diplomacy, but also more likely to relapse; in fact, 60 per cent of the civil wars that reached peace agreements in the early 2000s have since fallen back into conflict. As an organization created to prevent wars between states, the UN has struggled to meet the challenges of today’s conflicts, particularly when it comes to engaging non-state actors. At the same time, the UN is often uniquely positioned to make contact with armed groups that may be blacklisted by key member states, and it is often UN peace operations that are best placed to implement strategies to address the various threats they pose.
What are the origins of the growth of today’s form of non-state armed groups and why have they increased in relevance in recent years? How has the rise of rebel and so-called “terrorist” groups affected the character of war today, and what implications does this have for conflict prevention and management? What challenges (and opportunities) do non-state actors pose to traditional forms of conflict resolution, and what can be learned from the UN’s experiences in places like Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali?
Drawing on a mix of academic literature, case studies and first-hand accounts of those involved directly in UN-led operations in the field, students will explore these questions and grapple with the very real predicaments that face today’s mediators and peacekeepers around the world. By the end of this course, students will have a firm grasp of the core theories and concepts that drive UN engagement with non-state actors, how the UN and its partners have developed strategies in asymmetrical and complex environments, and a practical experience of the difficulties of applying principles to reality. This course will be of interest to those wishing to pursue academic research on the UN, scholars of critical studies of international relations, and those hoping to build a career in conflict resolution and management.
This course provides an overview of environmental exposure assessment in public health. The course addresses chemical, noise, and radiation exposures through air, soil, water and food contact. Exposure routes considered include inhalation, ingestion and absorption. Methods for environmental and personal exposure monitoring will be covered, including biomarkers of internal exposure. Moreover, methods for quantifying environmental injustice or racism will be covered. In a hands-on class project, smartphones will be used to conduct environmental exposure assessment in a local community, and data bio-shared for spatio-temporal analyses by the students. Finally evolving concepts in exposure science such as the exposome will be introduced.
