The fashion industry is an ideal case study on how governments, citizens and international institutions attempt to limit the environmental and social impacts of complex consumer industries with global supply chains. Historically, apparel and textiles have been at the center of some of the most consequential government actions under liberal Western democracy, including the abolition of slavery and the passage of the first workplace safety and labor laws in the United States. In recent years, fashion has returned to the center of dynamic policy debates within the sustainability and social impact space.
The $2.5 trillion global fashion industry’s social and environmental impacts often evade regulation. Major brands leverage long and opaque supply chains for raw materials and cheap manufacturing costs with very little accountability. Private regulation and voluntary commitments have policed fashion for the better part of four decades, an approach that arguably has ended in failures to protect human and environmental rights. The industry’s lack of accountability has cost lives, including the notorious Rana Plaza building collapse in 2013 where 1,132 garment makers died, and now contributes to a sizable percentage of annual climate change. Profits have been pushed to the top of the supply chain while garment makers consistently toil for poverty wages, and the pollution and environmental degradation of fashion is a burden almost exclusively carried by low-and-middle income nations and communities of color that manufacture clothing and produce raw materials.
But the tide is turning. Governments are being asked to step in and regulate the fashion industry. Can effective fashion policies police international supply chains and achieve their intended aims? Might they unleash unintended consequences and in what ways? This course is an introduction to the fast-evolving space of modern environmental and labor policy as it intersects with fashion, and which seeks to incentivize more responsible business behavior in the realm of social, environmental and governance impacts. The class will use recently passed and proposed fashion social and sustainability policies as our case studies, including the New York State Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act; mandatory human rights due diligence in Europe; California’s Garment Worker Protection Act and Congress’s FABRIC Act; the FTC Green Guides and the UK CMA’s Green Claims Code; and Europe&rsquo
This course examines the canonical texts of modern semiology and semiotics from the perspective of anthropological methods and theories. Beginning with an extensive examination of the works of Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce, the course examines the theoretical elaborations and movements of structuralism and pragmatism through the 1960s.
This condensed course provides a solid understanding of impact investing and financial innovation at the intersection of public policy, development, entrepreneurship, finance, and law. We combine a theoretical approach, practical experience in emerging markets, and case studies (e.g., education in Brazil, microfinance in Mexico and India, FinTech in Kenya and Brazil). Students are expected to develop personal projects in lieu of the exam (papers or business plans). We welcome students from SIPA and other schools.
Within the larger category of Sustainable Finance, Impact Investing is attracting growing interest from investors, academia, and the third sector. Impact investing allocates resources with a financial, social, and environmental return, while the impact is both intentional and measured. We analyze the latest global trends in Impact Investing, its revolutionary proposal, and its limitations.
Financial innovation plays a central role in the impact agenda through innovative financial instruments such as social impact bonds or green bonds and through inclusive financial services boosted by FinTech.
Was the pro-life narrative strategy a decisive factor in overturning Roe v. Wade? After countless videos of police brutality, why did the video of George Floyd’s murder dramatically accelerate the pace of cultural and policy change? After years of campaigns to reduce teen pregnancy, how was it that a TV show became one of the main drivers of reducing teen pregnancy to the lowest point in recorded history? After losing 31 state referendums, why did a new narrative approach enable the gay marriage campaign to start winning nationwide? These questions and storytelling examples are part of broader social impact campaigns which combined the right mix of strategy and narrative to create change. A social impact campaign is one that creates a significant change that addresses a pressing social issue. Often, there is too little focus on the power of narrative to change behavior and drive action.
This class will explore all aspects of social impact campaigns that harness the power of “effective” stories to engage audiences and prompt action. Additionally, we will investigate how corporations and brands develop campaigns and how they partner with the government, foundations and NGOs. Students will have the chance to question some of the leading creators/practitioners as they create their own social impact campaigns.
This course will teach students how to develop the organizational capacity and management skills
necessary for compliance with the new SEC Climate Disclosure Regulations. This course will introduce
regulated ESG reporting, emphasizing climate disclosure. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) Climate disclosure will serve as the basis for the discussion and could be used as a case study to
illustrate the best practices for administering a sustainability reporting regime and sustainability reporting
more broadly within an organization. By the conclusion of this course, students will be able to design,
manage, and implement new processes and procedures within their organizations to respond to the new
SEC Climate Disclosures and other forthcoming regulated and mandatory disclosures.
To increase comparability, relevancy, and accuracy of the environmental data and sustainability
information reported by companies on climate and human capital matters, the SEC prioritized climate
change and ESG regulations throughout 2022, promising new rules to better inform and protect investors
and other stakeholders. This unprecedented action paves the way for disclosures that were previously
voluntary to become required. The evolution of the ESG landscape will considerably transform ESG from
a reputational risk concern to a regulatory-driven activity, thereby increasing the ESG lens/scrutiny at the
level of financial statements.
Due to the complexity of this SEC Climate Rule, this course will focus on the SEC Climate Disclosures in
their first year of implementation so that students can interpret, acquire a deeper understanding of the new
rules, and develop a Year 1 implementation strategy. To prepare the next generation of sustainability
leaders to respond to this new regulatory regime, the intended audience of this course consists of
sustainability leaders from a diversity of industries responsible for climate reporting.
Impact investing is young but fast-growing industry. An increasing number of philanthropists, traditional investors, and asset managers look to impact investment as a compelling asset class. Entrepreneurs tackling social and environmental issues are finding in impact investors a more reliable and better-aligned source of capital to finance their ventures. The industry requires a committed, talented, and well-prepared pool of capital to continue evolving and growing. This class aims to provide the students with some of the essential skills and tools they will require to work and thrive in the impact investing industry. This is an experiential course designed to introduce students to impact investing and provide them with the skills used by impact investors every day. Students will work on the key "products" required in an impact investment transaction, including: assessing a possible impact investment; writing an investment memo with a full impact analysis, and presenting an investment proposal to a group of seasoned impact investors. This course will be designed to translate the legal aspects of disclosure law to our students who do not have a background in law. This course will span topics from voluntary to mandatory disclosures and address both the SEC rule and the EU regulations to prepare students to conceptualize these requirements for multinational, global organizations.

Their art raises awareness of the need to act collectively, suggesting frameworks for replacing anthropocentric and colonial approaches to nature, and amplifying the urgent need for environmental justice. In this pivotal moment of climate change, artists inspire by cultivating new narratives and giving form to the invisible or unimaginable, demonstrating how art can help awaken resolve and shape our next steps. They invite viewer participation and action, and suggest ways to make a difference. In the process, they expand our potential for empathy and agency.

This one-credit seminar is designed for PhD students from any department in any school at Columbia University. We will read contemporary literature and examine case studies on designing, conducting, and communicating research projects that contribute to solutions to climate change and related problems of the Anthropocene. This course will provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the impact of armed conflict on children, the United Nations’ children and armed conflict (CAAC) mandate, and efforts to end and prevent children’s suffering. At the fundamental level, the course will cover topics on polymerization techniques, electronic structure of organic semiconductors, characterization strategies, nanostructures and self-assembly.
International migration's substantial economic and social effects are at the forefront of today's academic discussion, international debate as well as national policy strategies. This course introduces students to the key notions, norms, and narratives of international migration from economic, legal, sociological, international relations, and normative perspectives. Students will learn about transnational livelihood strategies and channels through which migration and migrants can enhance human development especially in their countries of origin, while creating better opportunities for themselves and contributing to their communities of destination. This includes in-depth discussions of the determinants, flows and effects of emigration, immigration, return, financial and social remittances, and diaspora investment. Highlighting migration phenomena in different scenarios in the global North, as well as in the global South, the course emphasizes the agency of migrants and gender differences in the experiences and effects, as well as the role their legal status plays. It will address the root causes of migration and the protection of migrants' human, social and labor rights. The course also furthers participants' understanding of the policy responses in both, the international and the domestic spheres. To this end, it introduces students to key policies and governance schemes, including temporary labor migration programs, bilateral labor migration agreements, and diaspora engagement institutions.

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the process of political development. It introduces a set of analytic tools based on the strategic perspective of political science and political economy to evaluate the current debates in political development and to draw policy-relevant conclusions. Throughout the course, we will discuss the political dimensions and challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their transformations as modular building blocks. First, we explore the politics of economic development: the role of leadership, political systems, and institutions in promoting growth. We study the mechanisms that underlie the persistence of poverty. Utilizing numerous country case studies, we will answer: What is political development? What explains why some countries have prospered while others remain poor, violent, or unequal? Why do we observe growth, stability and freedoms in some and not in others? Second, we will explore the causes and consequences of the state, political institutions, and democracy. What is at the root of state capacity, political participation, and other aspects of political development? What is the role of property rights and rule of law in development? How do we promote gender equality and empowerment? How do we detect and mitigate the effects of corruption? How do we foster political stability? In the third part of the course, we will focus on policies that foster stability and development. We will critically examine the effects of Western intervention in the developing world, historical legacies of slavery and colonialism, and the various tools of foreign policy: aid, democracy promotion and military interventions. We will further explore the extent to which outside interventions alleviated poverty and whether it improved public goods provision or promoted political stability. Finally, the course will consider the role of emerging powers in the context of global governance and their influence on the future course of development in the Global South.

Averting the deepest climate crisis and mitigating the substantial financial costs of global warming and its consequences will require the decarbonization of the world’s energy systems by 2050, necessitating trillions of dollars of public and private investment. Pathways and policies are not clear or are inconsistent on the respective roles of public and private investment, and often overlook the myriad structural legal and institutional barriers to scaling both. The absence of coherent policy frameworks has also led to a proliferation of voluntary private-sector initiatives, including the explosion of “ESG investing.” Many of the challenges of sustainable investment are approached in silos - focusing specifically on public finance or on private capital, or on certain sectors, technologies, or impacts.
This course is decidedly interdisciplinary. We will explore the myriad interrelated challenges to investing in the energy transition, to see why the ‘big picture’ is important for really understanding policies or practices at a granular level. Students will leave the class with a critical understanding of the complexities of investing in the energy transition and how to understand and navigate various
tensions and trade-offs.
The seminar will offer an insider perspective on current issues facing the Federal Reserve and detail the various interconnections between the Fed and financial markets. The course will examine and compare the extraordinary policy actions of the Fed in response to recent crises: the global financial crisis of 2007-2009, the pandemic financial stress of 2020, and the banking crisis of March 2023. In addition, the seminar will study the evolution of the Fed’s monetary policy framework, including specifics on the Fed’s market transactions, and will also explore key concepts of the financial system that are relevant to the central bank and fundamental to financial stability.
There will also be a focus on other topical issues relevant for the Federal Reserve. For the Fall 2023 semester, current issues include the shifting outlook for the Fed’s monetary policy, central bank independence and the politicization of the Fed, the escalating focus on the potential for central banks to issue digital currencies, and other emerging topics.
Practical and theoretical issues relating to the teaching of psychology and the psychology of teaching.
The purpose of this course is to enable you to become an informed user of financial information. To be properly informed you need to understand financial statements, the note disclosures and the language of accounting and financial reporting. We will focus on the three major financial statements – the balance sheet, the income statement and the statement of cash flows - that companies prepare for use by management and external parties. We will examine the underlying concepts that go into the preparation of these financial statements as well as specific accounting rules that apply when preparing financial statements. As we gain an understanding of the financial information, we will look at approaches to analyze the financial strength and operations of an entity. We will use actual financial statements to understand how financial information is presented.
This course provides an introduction to major schools of thought about play structure and the practice of dramaturgy in the western theatre. Through directed readings and an ongoing practical project centered around one play, students will develop a deeper understanding of how dramatic writing functions as a blueprint for a life on the stage, and a refined vocabulary to describe story structures and dramatic writing techniques. By learning to view and question a play from a kaleidoscopic range of angles, students will enhance their abilities to take a printed text onto the live stage.

The course will consider the relationship between politics and literature in Ukraine, focusing on the late Soviet period up to the present, but also covering the tragic pages of the history of Ukrainian literature in the 1920s-1930s, when Ukrainian creatives loyal to the Soviet regime were seemingly granted freedom of expression only to be brutally suppressed.
We will trace the emergence of new post-Soviet literature and consider texts which were written in reaction to "dead Soviet literature". We will analyze why the first post-soviet generation of young Ukrainian authors was consciously apolitical and how this generation matured, experienced some dramatic events in Ukrainian politics and society, and formed their own political views. We will analyze how these views are reflected in the writers' texts.
We will consider the extent to which literature influenced Ukrainian society immediately after 1991, in the late 1990s, and up to the present day. What has been the role of the writer in Ukrainian society through this 30-year period?
Separately, we will consider and try to model the near future of Russian-language and Crimean-Tatar literature in the context of Ukrainian literature and politics.

This course describes the history and current situation of the level and distribution of global income, analyses the theory of economic growth and the empirical evidence on the factors influencing growth, including physical and human capital accumulation, technical change and population growth, explores the effects of trade, foreign direct investment, natural resources, geography, and public sector institutions on economic growth and distribution of income, and examines how financial development and exchange rate regimes affect the prospects for economic growth.
This course is designed to prepare social workers for clinical work with bereaved families. We emphasize the idea that grief therapy focuses importantly on active listening linked to interventions that provide validation, support or guidance. We provide a way of understanding grief using an attachment theory model that explains a big-picture framework for understanding grief and adaptation to loss. The centerpiece of the course is a presentation of an approach to grief therapy derived from our efficacy-tested treatment for complicated grief and incorporating attention to self-care, racism, ethical obligations and dilemmas and using peer or experienced supervision in doing grief therapy.

Students explore more deeply the range of skills and techniques necessary to direct both short and feature films including script breakdown of sequences, scenes, turning points and beats as well as advanced study of actor and camera staging. Students will hone their directing skills by preparing, shooting, and editing, in video, a minimum of three significant scenes from published or original work, depending on priority of the instructor. When taken concurrently, at least one of these scenes will be presented in Directing the Actor workshops. Students should also be working on a first draft of a short screenplay for their second-year project if they intend to take Directing 4.

This is the second of two semester-long courses that provide graduate students with an overview of the scholarly study of American politics. G6210 and G6211 constitute the American politics field survey. The field survey is designed for political science doctoral students who intend to specialize in American politics, as well as for those students whose primary interests are comparative politics, international relations, or political theory, but who desire an intensive introduction to the American style of political science. In this course we will cover a range of topics related to American politics that, for the most part, are not covered in G6210. Our focus will be on public opinion and political behavior. The reading assignments are a mix of foundational contributions (i.e. the canons of American politics literature) and recent research. The first part of each seminar session will aim to clarify and probe enduring puzzles, theories, and debates highlighted in the foundational texts. The latter portion of the seminar session will focus on how recent studies contribute to ongoing debates and define the research agenda going forward.
