We will read and discuss pertinent historical primary and secondary sources in Korean and Chinese. The material will be tailored to students’ research interests.
Prerequisites: solid command of classical Japanese.
An introduction to early Japanese texts focused on the depiction of legendary rulers, primarily in the eighth century Kojiki, Nihon shoki, and Man'yoshu. Examines narrative strategies of political legitimization and considers the prominent role played by songs/poems (uta) attributed to or associated with emperors in these texts and some later works.

The Proposal Preparation Seminar is designed to help the students meet the new 3rd year research requirements. The instructor of the Proposal Preparation Seminar gives feedback on research papers and drafts of dissertation proposals; encourages feedback from all participants and leads in-class discussion; and offers practical advice about approaching committee members, preparing for the proposal defense, etc.
