Discusses relations between the brain, behavior, and experience. Emphasizes science as a process of discovering both new ideas and new empirical results. PSYC W1001 serves as a prerequisite for further psychology courses and should be completed by the sophomore year.

The beginning workshop in fiction is designed for students with little or no experience writing literary texts in fiction. Students are introduced to a range of technical and imaginative concerns through exercises and discussions, and they eventually produce their own writing for the critical analysis of the class. The focus of the course is on the rudiments of voice, character, setting, point of view, plot, and lyrical use of language. Students will begin to develop the critical skills that will allow them to read like writers and understand, on a technical level, how accomplished creative writing is produced. Outside readings of a wide range of fiction supplement and inform the exercises and longer written projects.

BC1003x is designed to present fundamental concepts of chemistry and to help students develop strong chemical problem solving skills. The course will approach chemistry from both molecular and macroscopic perspectives. It is particularly appropriate for first-year students with weak backgrounds in chemistry and/or mathematical problem-solving (e.g., SAT Math ≤ 600) who have an interest in continuing into the CHEM BC2001x General Chemistry course, presumably leading to further scientific study at the College.
