This course provides a comprehensive set of financial management tools for nonprofit professionals, including managers and staff, whether they oversee financial statements and reporting or need to translate financial statements and reporting across stakeholders. This course emphasizes the requirements for nonprofits in recording and budgeting the financials to support the organization’s mission. Additionally, the course will provide students with the ability to analyze financial statements and answer financial questions typically asked by stakeholders such as the governing board, donors, the public, beneficiaries, media, and regulators. Finally, the course will identify the risks and opportunities found in an organization's financial information to increase the public's confidence in and understanding of the organization's mission and operations.
As digital media increasingly drives the field of strategic communication, leading successful communication efforts also require a platform specific, evidence-based strategic approach. Leaders must know how to use a broad and rapidly changing mix of digital media platforms and tools to connect their message with the right audience. To that end, this course covers major topics in digital media and communication, such as content strategy, digital experience, channel planning, online reputation management, programmatic marketing, audience targeting, artificial intelligence and more. Through in-class lectures, discussion, case studies, guest speakers, group projects and individual writing assignments, students in this course will be introduced to strategic decision-making and communications planning for social media, mobile, digital advertising, search, email, digital out-of-home and interactive media (video, radio, podcasts). Students will also gain an in-depth understanding of how to integrate digital strategies and tactics with traditional communication efforts.

The exponential growth of information and data—combined with software that can understand and learn from experience—provides entrepreneurs with tremendous opportunities to bring innovative customer-focused solutions to market. While there are no direct paths to bring a new product idea to market, there are easily identifiable milestones that can guide the way from idea generation to product profitability. This course will explore the process of early-stage development of knowledge-driven, data-intensive digital products like Spotify, Netflix, Watson, and TripAdvisor. The goal is to create a hands-on entrepreneurial experience at its most elemental and visceral level—ideation, brainstorming, interacting with customers, building a founding team, developing a business model, managing risk, investigating competitors, pitching the business to potential investors, and creating an interactive mobile app prototype (a design proof of concept for your business idea) through an iterative user-centered design process. In this course, we use Eric Reis’ startup method from his book, Lean Startup, as a foundation for creating and testing new ideas. Students learn to validate their new product ideas in the market by immediately engaging with customers to gauge whether their idea solves a problem better than alternative solutions. Building on the insight generated by customer interviews, students design a business model using the Lean Canvas approach designed by Ash Maurya and iterate their ideas based on Design Thinking (Tim Brown) principles. Throughout the course, we will shift from learning to the rapid application of new frameworks to speed up product design and development. Students will be exposed to all the pressures and demands of real-world start-ups by participating in teams tasked with creating weekly deliverables required to launch a new business. The user-experience skills and methods that are taught in this class are in demand by employers and startups across nearly every industry and reflect the latest best practices used to create today’s most widely used and award-winning digital products. The skills developed in this class apply to many real-world business problems that require an agile and iterative approach.

This course is intended to provide a mechanism to MA students in Statistics who undertake on-campus project work or research. Nonlinear Option Pricing is a major and popular theme of research today in quantitative finance, covering a wide variety of topics such as American option pricing, uncertain volatility, uncertain mortality, different rates for borrowing and lending, calibration of models to market smiles, credit valuation adjustment (CVA), transaction costs, illiquid markets, super-replication under delta and gamma constraints, etc. The objective of this course is twofold: (1) introduce some nonlinear aspects of quantitative finance, and (2) present and compare various numerical methods for solving high-dimensional nonlinear problems arising in option pricing.
The Tax Planning course explores the various methods of the U.S. tax system, its development, its applicability to individual (and corporate) taxpayers, and steps taxpayers of various income and wealth levels take to determine,
meet, and minimize their tax obligations, depending on their goals. Students will learn how to identify sources, nature, and taxability of taxpayers’ income and gains, to determine the deductibility of any expenses they incur to reduce income, identify credits they may have to offset taxes due, understand filing and payment obligations, and apply the methods of minimizing tax - avoidance, deferral, and use of lower brackets or realization by other taxpayers.
Prerequisites: EESC GU5400, EESCGU5401. The dynamics of environment and society interact with climate and can be modified through use of modern climate information. To arrive at the best use of climate information, there is a need to see climate in a balanced way, among the myriad of factors at play. Equally, there is a need to appreciate the range of climate information available and to grasp its underlying basis and the reasons for varying levels of certainty. This includes subseasonal to seasonal climate forecasts for developing climate services for better adapting to climate stresses, and decadal and climate change projections for improved climate policy. Many decisions in society are at more local scales, and regional climate information considered at appropriate scales and appropriately translated to be accessible and salient to stakeholders is key. Students will build a sufficient understanding of the science behind the information, and analyze examples of how the information can and is being used. This course will prepare the ground for a holistic understanding needed for wise use of climate information.
This seminar is focused on practical applications of climate information and research. The objective of the course is to teach students to integrate their understanding of climate science, social science, policy studies, and communications to address real world problems, especially those they will encounter in academia or on the job after graduation.

The objective of the course is to provide students with an interdisciplinary link between drawing and printmaking through an integrated studio project. Students will use drawing, printmaking and collage to create a body of work to be presented in a folio format. In the course, students develop and refine their drawing sensibility, and are encouraged to experiment with various forms of non-traditional printmaking. Drawing is the most important and crucial part of any printmaking method, and prints can in turn refine and revolutionize the way drawings are produced. In this course, students will explore the porous boundaries between drawing and print.
Tech Arts: Post Production II continues teaching the core techniques for picture and sound editing and the post production workflow process for Columbia Film MFA students. We will cover preparing for a long-form edit, digital script integration, color management and continuity, advanced trimming, and advanced finishing. The hands-on lessons and exercises will be conducted using the industry-standard Non-Linear Editing Systems, Avid Media Composer, and Davinci Resolve. Each week’s class will consist of hands-on demonstrations and self-paced practice using content created by the students and provided by the program.
This course teaches cutting-edge tools and methods that drive investment decisions at quantitative trading firms, and, more generally, firms applying machine learning to big data. The course will combine presentations of theory, immediately followed by in-class Python programming examples using real financial data. The course will develop a general approach to building models of economic and financial processes, with a focus on statistical learning techniques that scale to large data sets. Among the topics covered are lasso, elastic net, cross validation, Bayesian models, the EM algorithm, Support Vector Machines, kernel methods, Gaussian processes, Hidden Markov Models, and neural networks. The final project will lead the students to build a trading strategy based on the techniques learned throughout the course.

Yet ethical issues are arising not in isolation, but as part of global communities and discourses. In research, multinational pharmaceutical companies are increasingly conducting studies in both industrialized countries and the developing world, posing numerous ethical tensions. In clinical care, uses of reproductive technologies differ across national borders, leading to “reproductive tourism”. End of life care varies widely, reflecting in part differing attitudes toward death and dying. This course examines the political, economic, social, cultural, philosophical, medical, and historical roots and implications of these issues. The course meets once a week online for an hour and a half, and offers extensive live-session interaction and post-session discussion forums to explore the various bioethical issues contemplated throughout the semester.

Video I is an introductory class on the production and editing of digital video. Designed as an intensive hands-on production/post-production workshop, the apprehension of technical and aesthetic skills in shooting, sound and editing will be emphasized. Assignments are developed to allow students to deepen their familiarity with the language of the moving image medium. Over the course of the term, the class will explore fiction, documentary and experimental approaches, as well as films that mix and mess with these genres. Class time will be divided between technical workshops, viewing and discussing films and videos by independent producers/artists and discussing and critiquing student projects. There will also be visits from established artists and filmmakers. Readings will be assigned on technical, aesthetic and theoretical issues, although the majority of the class will focus on making and watching. This is a Visual Arts class, focused on using the moving image as an artistic means of expression, articulation, and exploration. It emphasizes experimentation over imitation. Video I is currently an on-line class and, because of this, we will be exploring and pushing the constraints of what is possible under these very special circumstances. Students will work with a variety of recording devices that are ‘at hand,’ as well as found and archival footage. This is in keeping with many artists approach to the moving image. Artists have had to learn to be nimble and flexible, finding ways to continue to speak under heavy financial, material, technological and political constraints. This ‘making do’ has shaped much of the artistic work done with this medium. Historically, this having to ‘make do’ has led again and again to invention and reinvention. It has led to a rethinking of the medium itself. Artistic works are currently made with high-end cameras, ancient cell phones and everything in between. These works, regardless of capture technology, are shown in museums, cinemas, and galleries and on YouTube, Vimeo and TikTok. Our temporarily changed current landscape has only accelerated these changes in how the moving image is imagined, made and viewed. This class is part of this moment of re-imagining and experimentation.
