This is a lecture course that is intended to help you understand the role that financial markets play in the business environment that you will face in the future. It also provides an understanding of the underlying institutions that either help financial markets work well or that interfere with the efficient performance of these markets. This course develops a series of applications of principles from finance and economics that explore the connection between financial markets and the economy. In addition, it will focus on many public policy issues and examine how the most important players in financial markets, central banks, operate and how monetary policy is conducted. The course will have a strong international orientation by examining monetary policy in many countries and possible reforms of the international financial system. We will also focus on current events reported in the financial press by devoting one class hour per day to an extensive class discussion of current economic events and will use the analytic frameworks developed in class help us to understand these developments.
This course is designed to introduce the student to routine and episodic primary care of the pediatric patient. The focus will be placed on age-appropriate physical, cognitive, and emotional development, as well as frequently encountered illnesses seen in an outpatient setting.
Students examine the issue of violence against women and families. The demographics of the population, theories of domestic violence, crisis intervention, and short- and long-term clinical issues will be examined, as will service modalities for women victims and survivors, batterers, and their children.
This seminar course is designed to further develop the role of the DNP student in the provision of care to vulnerable individuals, families within their communities in various clinical settings. Using the DNP Competencies in Comprehensive Care as the framework, students will analyze clinical decision-making and utilize evidence for best clinical practices. Through case presentation the student will discuss multiple expressions of chronic physical and mental illness commonly seen in community settings. The focus will be placed on populations seen routinely in the community who are at risk for various complications that may lead to impairment and disability.
The clinical practicum builds upon knowledge obtained in Diagnosis and Management II. This practicum is designed to expand the role of the nurse practitioner student to provide primary care to complex patients, families and communities, in an outpatient settings across the lifespan. This course is designed to introduce the student to the role of the nurse practitioner as a provider of community centered family primary care. The focus will be on health maintenance and illness prevention.
This course is designed to provide beginning familiarity with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence based psychosocial treatment initially developed for suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Students will be taught the primary theories, principles, and strategies that inform DBT. Students will also become familiar with the latest research on DBT for BPD. Lecture, demonstration, multimedia applications, and group discussion will be used as the primary teaching methods. DBT is a complex treatment with multiple facets. It is therefore not expected that a student will have full competence to deliver the treatment as a result of just this one course. However, this course will provide sufficient background and serve as a necessary prerequisite before using DBT in an applied setting.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that was originally developed for chronically suicidal individuals and is now the gold standard treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. The treatment and its adaptations have since been proven through research to be effective across a wide range of disorders and behavioral problems which have at their core the issue of Pervasive Emotion Dysregulation. Students will be introduced to key theoretical concepts that inform the “spirit” of DBT, along with an overview of core treatment strategies as used within a DBT skills group. This course is focused on DBT skills, and will provide students with a basic understanding of the four DBT skills modules (Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, Distress Tolerance). The focus will be on the revised and expanded DBT Skills Manual released in late 2014. Through course assignments and in-class activities, students will have an opportunity to learn the content of the skills, as well as how to structure and conduct a DBT skills group. Students will develop a beginning understanding of standard comprehensive DBT, the particular function of each treatment component, (e.g., individual, group, consultation team, coaching) and how DBT skills relate to the other program components. The basic format of this course will include the Instructor's presentation of concepts and principles, group discussion, modeling, role-plays, and technique coaching. As a practice elective, the major focus is on skill development. As such, students are expected participate fully in in-class practice exercises and be receptive to feedback from their classmates.
This course is not a traditional business law survey class. This course is an application oriented class that provides the business professional with an understanding of certain critical legal concepts that are an integral part of the decision-making process for a business enterprise to operate effectively in the United States. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a framework that will enable the student to identify legal issues that arise in a variety circumstances during the life cycle" of the business enterprise beginning with the formation of the business enterprise through the dissolution of the business enterprise through sale or bankruptcy. This course will focus primarily on the legal regime in the United States, although the laws of other jurisdictions will be noted where appropriate. The objectives of this course are to learn some key lessons about starting and running an entrepreneurial company, and to learn about the state of entrepreneurship in South Africa. The essence of the course will be our guest speakers, through whom we will learn not only about their personal experiences and lessons, but about entrepreneurship in general. Our guest speakers will be South African entrepreneurs from a wide variety of business sizes and backgrounds. In addition, we will have guest speakers from the local government and the leading business school. There will be a hands on project to be done with local South African entrepreneurs that will require preparation before leaving for Cape Town and a report to follow afterward.
Given the impact of technological tools and advancements in todays modern economy, it has become increasingly imperative for business professionals and professional graduate students to have a top-down understanding of some of the most relevant, applicable, and highly technical topics such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and digital tokens (among others). This course offers a comprehensive primer for those without any prior technical knowledge on the aforementioned subject matters, with a special focus on theory and practice and covering introductory- to intermediate-level content coverage. We will start by covering the basics and fundamental building blocks of the technological developments and innovations that made distributed systems and digital currencies such as blockchain and Bitcoin, respectively, possible. We will ultimately end the course on more complex topics and the latest research in the field, including the fundamental challenges to our existing economics and financial frameworks and the incumbent firms as well as potential solutions to such matters. Fieldwork is integral to the academic preparation and professional development of doctoral students. This course provides the academic framework for fieldwork experience required for the student’s program of study. Fieldwork documentation and faculty adviser approval is required prior to registration. A final written report must be submitted. This course will count toward the degree program and cannot be taken for pass/fail credit or audited. With approval from the department chair or the doctoral program director, doctoral students can register for this course at most twice. In rare situations, exceptions may be granted by the Dean's Office to register for the course more than twice (e.g., doctoral students funded by industrial grants who wish to perform doctoral fieldwork for their corporate sponsor). The doctoral student must be registered for this course during the same term as the fieldwork experience.

This course is the first of a two-course sequence. The second course is the Capstone Workshop in Sustainable Development Practice (SIPA U9001).
