This course is organized around a number of thematic centers or modules. Each is focused on stylistic peculiarities typical of a given functional style of the Ukrainian language. Each is designed to assist the student in acquiring an active command of lexical, grammatical, discourse, and stylistic traits that distinguish one style from the others and actively using them in real-life communicative settings in contemporary Ukraine. Advanced topics in linear algebra with applications to data analysis, algorithms, dynamics and differential equations, and more. (1) General vector spaces, linear transformations, spaces isomorphisms; (2) spectral theory - normal matrices and their spectral properties, Rayleigh quotient, Courant-Fischer Theorem, Jordan forms, eigenvalue perturbations; (3) least squares problem and the Gauss-Markov Theorem; (4) singular value decomposition, its approximation properties, matrix norms, PCA and CCA.

This course will examine geological problems from a standpoint of thermodynamic and kinetic theory. Theoretical thermodynamic concepts will be used to derive the crystallization depth and temperature of metamorphic and magmatic minerals, describe the solubility of volatile species in magmas, predict the composition of volcanic gas mixtures, model the nucleation and growth of crystals and bubbles in a melt and determine the chemical interaction between water and rock at the Earth’s surface. Kinetic treatments on the diffusion of heat and matter through crystals and melts will be used to constrain the timing of geological processes. Recommended preparation: Knowledge of mathematics at the level of partial differential equations; mineralogy (EESC 4113); and petrology (EESC 4701); or permission of the instructor.

Overview of the field of medicine for informaticians. Medical language and terminology, introduction to pathology and pathophysiology, the process of medical decision making, and an understanding of how information flows in the practice of medicine.

This short course explores techniques that enable sophisticated problem solving and data analysis in Microsoft Excel. Topics include implementing advanced logic using complex formulas and intermediate calculations; managing complexity with Excel's auditing features; importing, parsing and cleaning raw data; pulling data together using lookup functions; and summarizing and analyzing data with conditional aggregate functions and PivotTables. This course does not focus on specific policy or financial applications, but instead explores general concepts and techniques that can be flexibly applied to different solutions in Excel.
This is a course in Spanish conversation. Students will study and practice features of social interaction in Spanish that are crucial to participate in the new culture. This means the course has two learning objectives: One is learning to engage in regular conversations in Spanish; the other is to understand how conversation works. We will cover conversational issues such as gesture, narratives, intonation, opening and closing interactions, turn taking, etc. both in linguistics and social terms. Practice and analysis will be connected: Every week we will consider an aspect of oral interaction in Spanish. We will study those features in naturally occurring conversations among native speakers and we will practice in actual conversations inside and outside the classroom, by means of role play, simulation, film making, debates and interviews. We will use topics of conversation to provide a meaningful environment for the conversation practice.
Introduction to urban data analytics (analysis and visualization of new types of ‘big’ urban data, statistical tools for urban data analysis, machine learning methods, data privacy). Conceptualization of cities as complex adaptive systems (coarse-graining of urban dynamics, network models for infrastructure interdependencies, agent-based urban simulation). Integrated urban infrastructure systems design (basic design solutions for coupled, people-centric, and climate-resilient civil infrastructure systems, Monte Carlo simulations for infrastructure scenario generation).
This one-day seminar, conducted by the reputable training firm Training The Street, explores best practices and efficient techniques for building finance-related spreadsheets.
The lectures will use a real company as a case study and direct participants to blend accounting, corporate finance, and Excel skills to create a dynamic, three-statement financial model. The completed product has five years of projections, three years of historical data, and supporting schedules, including working capital, debt, equity, depreciation, and amortization.

Media Chinese (I & II) : This level-4 course enhances students’ proficiency in reading and discussing current events in Chinese. It features close reading and critical discussions on topics such as politics, economics, culture, and social issues. By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate Chinese media sources confidently and engage meaningfully in conversations about both global and Chinese current events.
This course is designed to help students master formal Chinese for professional or academic purposes. It includes reading materials and discussions on selections from Chinese media covering contemporary topics, Chinese literature, and modern Chinese intellectual history. This course delves into the intersection of epidemiology and computational methods, equipping students with the tools to conduct rigorous epidemiological studies from big clinical data repositories. Students will explore techniques from informatics, computer science, machine learning, and statistics to clean, analyze, and interpret data from electronic health records (EHRs) and other large-scale datasets. Through hands-on projects and case students, students will gain practical experience in applying epidemiologic study designs to uncover patterns, identify risk factors, model disease transmission dynamics, and evaluate interventions. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students to address real-world public health challenges by leveraging the power of data-driven insights. The course is broken up into modules, each of which covers an epidemiologic study design or principle. Modules will range from 1-3 classes, and will include (i) a lecture and (ii) accompanying lab work. Students are expected to read technical texts carefully, participate actively in lecture discussion, and develop hands-on skills in labs involving real-world biomedical and health datasets. This course, taught in English, offers an in-depth exploration of the Chinese language and its historical development. Key topics include historical phonology and syntax, the Chinese script, and the classification and linguistic features of major dialects. The course also explores the emergence of modern standard Chinese and early poetic traditions. The primary goal is to deepen students’ understanding of the language’s evolution while strengthening their critical thinking skills.
In the 1970s and 1980s a group of young Italian historians transformed the methods of historical inquiry and narrative. This class explores the origins, the diffusion, as well as the debate around Italian Microhistory across Europe and the United States. Theories of grammar built on English serve such languages poorly. This course seeks to address this imbalance by focusing on languages with complex morphological and morphosyntactic structures. Because the grammars of such languages are built around word structures, we will be exploring current lexicalist theories of grammar such as Lexical Functional Grammar and Construction Grammar to develop formal explicit analyses of these languages. One learns morphological and morphosyntactic analysis by doing it across languages of various types, so we will regularly be working through problems to analyze in class.

This course provides an introduction to semantics, the study of meaning in language. We will explore a range of semantic phenomena, and students will learn the tools and techniques of formal semantic analysis as well as core concepts, goals, and findings of the field.
The course focuses on the emergence of modernism in Ukrainian literature in the late 19th century and early 20th century, a period marked by a vigorous, often biting, polemic between the populist Ukrainian literary establishment and young Ukrainian writers who were inspired by their European counterparts. Students will read prose, poetry, and drama written by Ivan Franko, the writers of the Moloda Muza, Olha Kobylianska, Lesia Ukrainka, and Volodymyr Vynnychenko among others. The course will trace the introduction of feminism, urban motifs and settings, as well as decadence, into Ukrainian literature and will analyze the conflict that ensued among Ukrainian intellectuals as they shaped the identity of the Ukrainian people. The course will be supplemented by audio and visual materials reflecting this period in Ukrainian culture. Entirely in English with a parallel reading list for those who read Ukrainian.
After providing an overview of the history of Prague and the Czech lands from earliest times, the course will focus on works by Prague writers from the years 1895-1938, when the city was a truly multicultural urban center. Special attention will be given to each of the groups that contributed to Prague’s cultural diversity in this period: the Austro-German minority, which held disproportionate social, political and economic influence until 1918; the Czech majority, which made Prague the capital of the democratic First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938); the German- and Czech-speaking Jewish communities, which were almost entirely wiped out between 1938 and 1945; and the Russian and Ukrainian émigré community, which—thanks in large part to support from the Czechoslovak government—maintained a robust, independent cultural presence through the 1920s and early 1930s. Through close reading and analysis of works of poetry, drama, prose fiction, reportage, literary correspondence and essays, the course will trace common themes that preoccupied more than one Prague writer of this period. In compiling and comparing different versions of cultural myth, it will consider the applicability of various possible definitions of the literary genius loci of Prague.
We will explore Anton Chekhov’s work on its own terms, in its cultural context, and in relation to the work of others, especially Anglophone writers who responded, directly or indirectly, to Chekhov and his work. Readings by Chekhov include selected stories (short and long), his four major plays, and
Sakhalin Island,
his study of the Russian penal colony.

: In the contemporary workplace, teams are comprised of leaders and contributors from myriad cultural backgrounds. Each person’s way of viewing and being in the world shapes their approach to teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal relations in general. This 1-session course examines how diverse experiences and perspectives are critical to the growth and productivity of teams and organizations. Participants will gain insight into unconscious biases and other impediments to teamwork in the workplace and learn interpersonal skills that foster effective collaboration, conflict management, and productive team outcomes.
Expressive culture in the form of traditional and mediated performing and visual arts, film and literature has reflected and shaped modern Georgian social life in immeasurable ways. This seminar brings anthropological perspectives to bear on how expressive culture has served to articulate national and local senses of identity, grappled with collective trauma, and forged avant-garde creative networks within and beyond Georgia’s borders in the socialist and postsocialist periods. The course is organized in three units: it begins by interrogating the curatorial interventions of international organizations like UNESCO and their role in commodifying Georgian culture for global markets, proceeds by exploring powerful creative responses to colonial and totalitarian experience, and concludes by focusing on the capital city of Tbilisi–its built spaces, ever-changing social configurations, and shifting value systems–as a persistent muse in expressive cultural forms.

Common workplace interactions such as leading or contributing to meetings and delivering presentations are critical components of professional life. Yet, for many professionals, public speaking is highly stressful. This 1-session course will introduce you to public speaking skills that produce effective results in the workplace, including how to structure, frame, and organize a presentation and deliver it with impact. You’ll learn the key elements of an effective presentation and how to communicate your message convincingly by analyzing your audience and determining its needs. Participants will have an opportunity to practice important verbal and non-verbal delivery techniques – and begin to overcome the fears of speaking up and speaking out.

Effective negotiation is a key skill for leaders and contributors worldwide at all professional levels in organizations and workplaces. This 1-session course is designed to promote understanding and build problem-solving skills that can lead to strength and competency in this vital activity of everyday work life. Participants will be able to define negotiation and articulate the key tension that exists in all negotiations; prepare for negotiations using a research-based framework; and articulate their strengths and weaknesses as negotiators, as well as ways they can improve negotiation outcomes.
Networking for Mid-Career Advancement:
Workplace environments have always been bastions of operative professional relationships, explicit and tacit. Historically, research has demonstrated the value and benefits of networking, both in finding jobs during early career and advancing within an organization during later career. In this 1-session course, you will learn what networking can and cannot accomplish; how to network effectively and respectfully; balancing the “getting” and “giving” aspects of networking; and an actionable framework for conducting effective career-advancement networking strategies. Students will learn how to cultivate and sustain professional relationships that can continue to be beneficial over time.

Using the MBTI to Enhance Communication & Teamwork:
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a well-known personality assessment instrument widely administered worldwide in organizational and workplace settings. It does not measure skills or aptitudes but personality preferences – the qualities that combine to make us unique individuals. In this 1-session course, students will learn the benefits of using the MBTI in professional settings and developing self-awareness of preferred decision-making, problem-solving, and relating to others. Interactive exercises will also promote understanding and insight into the preferences of those who share styles dissimilar to ours. Understanding your MBTI profile will enable you to appreciate important personality differences and mesh with the complexities of diverse organizational cultures.
Some of the most exciting theoretical moving image work in recent years has centered on the problem of the acoustic sign in cinema and especially around the relation between image track and sound “track.” This course rethinks the history and theory of cinema from the point of view of sound: effects, dialogue, music. From cinematic sound recording and play-back technologies through Dolby sound enhancement and contemporary digital audio experiments. Revisiting basic theoretical concepts from the pov of sound: realism (sound perspective, dubbing), anti-realism (contrapuntal and dissonant effects), genre (the leitmotiv), perception (the synaesthetic effect). The silent to sound divide considered relative to the *19th* century Romanticism of the classical Hollywood score associated with the Viennese-trained Max Steiner to the scores of John Williams.
The Gender/Sexuality Workshop is a forum for Ph.D. students interested in social science topics broadly related to gender and sexuality. In particular, it will provide an opportunity for students share and refine their own works in progress by getting feedback from other students in the workshop. The workshop is geared towards students conducting empirical work, from ethnographies and interview-based projects to archival research to other kinds of critical quantitative work that attempts to theorize gender/sexuality. We will take an expansive view of gender and sexuality as a mode of classifying people and a structure that organizes social life, including work that uses gender/sexuality as a lens to interrogate other social structures such as empire, capitalism, science and knowledge, states and governance, and more. The G/S Workshop will meet biweekly (every other week) over the course of Spring 2025.

This course covers the Standard Model of Particle Physics, including it conception, successes, and limitations, with the goal of introducing upper-level physics majors to the foundations and current status of particle physics as a field of research. Specific topics to be covered include: historical introduction and review of the Standard Model; particle interactions and particle dynamics; relativistic kinematics; Feynman calculus, quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics, and weak interactions; electroweak unification and the Higgs mechanism; neutrino oscillations; and beyond-standard model physics and evidence. Along the way, students will research special topics and familiarize themselves with particle physics research.
Course Summary: Water, one of humankind’s first power sources, remains critically important to the task of maintaining a sustainable energy supply, in the United States and elsewhere. Conversely, the need to provide safe drinking water and keep America’s rivers clean cannot be met without access to reliable energy supplies. As the impact of climate disruption and other resource constraints begins to mount, the water/energy nexus is growing increasingly complex and conflict-prone. Essential Connections begins by examining the development of America’s water and energy policies over the past century and how such policies helped to shape present-day environmental law and regulation. Our focus then turns to the current state of US water and energy resources and policy, covering issues such as oil and gas exploration, nuclear energy, hydroelectric power and renewables. We also examine questions of inclusion and equity in connection with the ways in which communities allocate their water and energy resources and burdens along racial, ethnic and socioeconomic lines. The third and final section of the course addresses the prospects for establishing water and energy policies that can withstand climate disruption, scarcity and, perhaps most importantly, America’s seemingly endless appetite for political dysfunction. By semester’s end, students will better understand the state of America’s energy and water supply systems and current efforts to cope with depletion, climate change and related threats affecting these critical, highly-interdependent systems. As a final project, students will utilize the knowledge gained during the semester to create specific proposals for preserving and enhancing the sustainability of US water and energy resources.
These two-part mid-career global leadership development courses (1.5 credit course in the summer and spring) provide intensive, collaborative, and highly interactive hands-on instruction, constructive evaluation, and ample opportunities to transform theory into practice. It utilizes cutting-edge, research-based methodologies and customized case studies to build the next generation of leaders that turn differences into opportunities, ideas into solutions, and knowledge into action. Students will acquire a variety of leadership skills in global contexts, including cross-cultural negotiation strategies, consensus building, collaborative facilitation, persuasion, inclusionary leadership, design-thinking-based problem-solving techniques, and public speaking in knowledge-intensive industries. They will gain a competitive edge in their professional careers by participating in a variety of simulation games, role-playing exercises, and mock public policy panels to apply the skills they have learned and receive valuable feedback.

This seminar examines ways in which Italy is understood and represented by Italians and non-Italians. It will analyze the formation of multiple discourses on Italy, how Italian culture and society are imagined, represented and/or distorted. Based on an anthropological perspective, this course will examine ways in which we can understand Italy through the intersections of pluralism, ethnicity, gender, and religion. The course will study how Italy strives for political and economic unity, while there is a concurrent push toward inequality, exclusion, and marginalization. Moreover, the course will analyze the revitalization of nationalism on one hand of regionalism on the other, and will focus on the concepts of territory, identity, and tradition. Short videos that can be watched on computer and alternative readings for those fluent in Italian will be assigned. There are no pre-requisites for this course.
Enrollment limited to 12 students. Mechatronics is the application of electronics and microcomputers to control mechanical systems. Systems explored include on/off systems, solenoids, stepper motors, DC motors, thermal systems, magnetic levitation. Use of analog and digital electronics and various sensors for control. Programming microcomputers in Assembly and C. Lab required.

GIS course with training in landscape analysis, digital mapping and web-based presentations of geospatial data. We will draw on archaeological and historical evidence, aerial photographs and satellite imagery to map and explore the history and politics of the irrigated landscape around Madagascar’s capital city. We will critically assess what different mapping techniques offer, and what kind of narratives they underpin or foreclose upon.
